Battle over Bespin

By Mad Cat, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

For our big display game at the Vapnartak 2016 Wargames show made a planet, with a cloud city on it.

And in orbit that's no small moon. Well alright it is.

The table is a 6x8 with two Deepcut Studios PVC mats.

Bespin is a flatter hemisphere up against the table edge - imagine the first slice of an apple then chop it in half. It is 36" across and about 6" thick. Made of expanded poly foam board with a plaster and ploy filler crust. Painted Taucept Ocre then airbrushed sand, brown & white cloud bands.

Beautiful game!

Very nice! how was the cloud city model made? :)

It is a die cast miniature about 8cm across bought from eBay. Drilled a hole up its garbage disposal chute and inserted a brass rod.

I think it was from one of those "Star Wars Vehicles" Magazine & Model type publications. I forget which, but I'll check when I get home tonight.

Edit: Yep the model is from the DeAgostini Star Wars Starships & Vehicle collection.

The same goes for the GR75s which you may notice are on the large side. Since wave 3 came out I now use them as larger freighters for convoy missions. We just place them on any small ship base and invent some stats for them. Different Hull Zone arcs don't matter too much as they usually have no guns and weak shields and at any rate freighters are all different from each other.

I dig out my old mobile phone, popped in my SIM card and uploaded some more photos of the game.

How to play a huge game in a day while chatting to Wargames show punters?

Well we cheated and set out a 400 point game on the lower 6x4 mat in this picture then set out the rest of our collections on the upper 6x4. We played the game as normal and periodically shifted the other forces on the top mat around to look dramatic.

That an ssd in the back?

Yes it is a resin one 14.5" long from an Australian seller on eBay.

I just checked and they are still available. Just search for "Resin Star Destroyer".

I know the scale is too small even with Armada's sliding scale, but now that it is painted and based on a 10"x4" base it does look impressive. The rules we used made it about 300 points and 67% extra hull, shields & firepower over and ISD-II. As this size it can turn and doesn't dominate the 800 point game too much.

You can buy a 34" SSD model or the one from Mel Miniatures but those ones can't really turn even on a 8x6 table. They are more like terrain pieces and you fight around them.
