Poon Raider?

By Gibbilo, in X-Wing Epic Play

Hey everyone,

Now that poons are a thing, does this make the Raider suddenly viable? (Maybe it has always been viable :P , but I mean like actually a solid choice for epic).

I was thinking something like this:

Raider:

Fore: Harpoon Missiles, Backup Generator

Aft: Weapons Engineer, Harpoon Missiles x 2, Thug Droids, Supercharged Power Cells, Ordnance Tubes, Impetuous Title.

Thoughts? Any idea to make it better? I tried to stay at the lucky 130point value for the Raider which seems to be the max you should invest in this thing anyway.

Switch your backup generator and supercharged power cells: the front of the Raider is the section that is (most likely) the most exposed. Once destroyed, it loses its cargo. Supercharged power cells gets dicarded, so the best place to put it is in the front.

The front is also where the recover action is, so you don't want to lose your recover action on top of the backup shield generator.

Also; Ordnance Experts. Essentially guidance chips for a huge ship, with the added bonus that if they don't need them a nearby 'normal' ship can.

Both good suggestions! So do you think harpoon raider has a spot on the field? Or are the range limitations too much of a downfall? It seems like the ability to shoot harpoons over and over would really add up after even just 2 turns.

We have an epic league going on right now (third season). After the first 2 rounds, the harpoon Raider has been doing quite well so far for multiple players. Some configurations have pure harpoons while others have a mix of harpoon and an assault (fire the harpoon on one, it survives, fires the assault, it dies and 2 splash damage).

All configurations so far have had between 7 and 10 ships escorting the Raider and providing interference. Some have focused on massed Ties, others on additional missile platforms and some even punishers with bombs. Overall, the ordnance Raider is performing very well.

Mind you that those results were pre-rule changes, so the new deployment limitations may have an impact on future games. Time will tell.

Very interesting! I haven't filled out the support ships yet but it does seem to me that you'd also probably want a targeting synchronizer or two, maybe on an Upsilon with another weapons engineer.

I was thinking something like:

Academy Pilot Mini Swarm +Howl Runner --- to screen

Imperial Trainee x 2 or 3 for --- flanking

Major Stridan -- FCS, Weapons Engineer, Op Spec, Target Synchr, Pattern Analyzer to run with the corvette , --- provide target locks and also hand out focuses to all tie fighters because I assume there will be a lot of missed attacks, inititally.

Maybe an Ace with left over points, or a punisher, or somebody with swarm tactics to buff the PS of the Raider. Probably want Agent Kallus in there somewhere.

Jonus: if you weren't already planning on including him, definitely stick him next to the Raider. This gives all three Harpoon Missile attacks two-rerolls (and allows saving locks to fire more Harpoons).

TIE FO with Targeting Synchronizer -- these can 'share' their Target Locks with the Raider, giving it even more flexibility in picking targets for its Harpoons during combat
