Novice Pilot Talent?

By stuffedskullcat, in X-Wing

Apologies if this has already been discussed in some way; I am adept at neither game design or Mathwing, so I'm prepared to accept "this is not a good idea".

In regards to many desires to "fix" back-burner ships or make generics more desirable, is there any space in the game for something along the lines of an Elite Pilot Talent, but rather a Novice Pilot Talent... something low-cost or free, that can only be assigned to non-unique pilots?

They wouldn't take the space of say, a Title, but could even offer a modest point reduction and limited ability?

I don't have specific ideas/cards laid out as I'm about to head out to my first game in weeks (where I will be happily and summarily trounced), but I'm curious if this has been explored and/or if there is design space in the game.

Thanks all and happy flying!

...also, not married to the term "Novice" Pilot Talent, as some generics are named as Veterans, possibly a different descriptor?

I like the idea but have no idea how you’d balance it. Maybe these could be the squad cards people have wanted by putting these on generics and then a named pilot gets a leader title and the gen’s get an ability if they are in range 1 of the wing leader. Could be cool but splash damage F’s formation flying. Thanks again guys for bomb/missle wing.

Yeah, I think this is basically the same functionality as would be gained if the designers implemented a squadron mechanic. Either a leader/squad member mechanism as @LordFajubi was talking about, or a simpler "All ships of the same class in your list gain the following ability" on a per ship basis would encourage generics, and potentially some of the less used, lower PS named pilots like Gemmer Sojan and Garven Dreis.

In short, we all want this, just under different names. :)

Thanks guys, that actually sounds good. Hopefully we'll see a good squad mechanic that can help out generics; perhaps a wide range (1-3) could relax the need for formation flying. Or even no range restriction if that wouldn't break the game.

Hmmmm... I honestly don't feel like generics are in a bad spot.

What I would like to see is something along this line for ships that don't have an EPT but should, like Hortan. So you do something that goes to unique pilots who do not have an EPT so Hortan gets some love but then so does Miranda and all the Ghost pilots and....

....nevermind.

Giving the Ghost and Upsilon (besides Kylo) access to EPTs? What could go wrong?
