Ye Olde Painting Ice Cave

By TheWampa, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Just noticed Madeline's wonderful thread after the holidays and finally recognized who originally inspired my Braylen Stramm repaint. Well, as they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery, so I decided to finally share my version and also other X-Wing repaints . Still getting back into the hobby after a 15 year hiatus and learning new stuff and techniques with every project. I'm looking forward to your feedback and always appreciate some c&c.

Also still working on my amateurish photo and lighting setup (still too dark... <_< ), so I'll add additional pictures over time.

EDIT : Link to my imgur album with additional photos.

To begin with, my Norra, Braylen (sometimes Thane) and Biggs squad. Used to fly this a lot, because I just love ARCs, but Harpoons make this a lot less fun lately :P . I also spent way too much time researching ANH Biggs' X-Wing...

found you! good job there! So I notice that the finish on your works get smoother over time. I was wondering about how to get that on mine. What changed?

Admirable work all round!

Would not have imagined dark purple could look so good on an Arc.

Loving that burnt orange on Braylen.

The orange highlights/replaced panels and a nice touch to the A's.

And that's a very effective scheme on Dash!

Well, practice, better tools, practice, reading up on techniques, practice, watching tutorial videos, and more practice. :D Also, I usually don't hesitate to throw a ship back into a two-day bath of 99,9% isopropyl alcohol if I'm not happy with the result or made a larger mistake. But in all seriousness, the most important thing is that I'm slowly getting the hang of color consistency and layering.

Btw, the actual order that I painted them in is 1. a still rather hideous B-Wing that I won't show, 2. the bunch of A-Wings mostly in parallel, 3. both ARCs in parallel, 4. Biggs and 5. Dash

Thank you so much! I was rather pleasantly surprised about the purple myself. Tried to go for a unusual, but somehow "ladylike" tone for Norra, and purple accents combined with a slightly blue-tinted white hull color turned out quite nicely!

Thats funny, My BWing is my first too.

Just finished this one for a friend, as a present for his 60. birthday. He is a Scum player, so I thought I might touch up one of my unused Kihraxz fighters. It is also the first time that I used enamel washes and oil streaking on a X-Wing model. Not quite there yet, and also made some rather stupid mistakes by being too hasty, but I'm happy with the end result.

Nice! You don't see orange too much.

Yeah, well done once again in executing that orange scheme, which looks so convincingly like it should have always been that way.

Thanks all! I really need to get some stronger lightbulbs with colder temperature (at least 5000K) for my improvised photo setup. The ship is basecoated in Vallejo Game Color Bloody Red, so it really isn't orange per se. But the images often still are too dark, so I tend to pass them through IrfanView's auto-correct once. That might cause this effect...

Also, I'm still fighting with my camera's auto-focus feature...

Aha! Finally got me some nice brighter and colder (color temperature) LED-bulbs from the local home improvement store. Also, actually reading the full camera manual after about ten years actually owning the piece helped a lot. No more yellowish pictures! ;)

I also finally finished Dash! It's the first time I really applied enamel washes (for panel lines, homemade from black Revell enamel color and some thinner) and artists oil paints (mostly burnt sienna, burnt umber and some black) for some nice detailing, weathering and battle damage. Oil colors are really fun to work with, I really had to reign myself in. Otherwise I might have gotten carried away even further... :D

An additional shot from the bottom! I use magnets on most ships, and decided to go with a large sized one. Had to drill carefully a larger hole, because I needed a 10 mm diameter.

And finally, Dash and his old pal Poe, my current tourney list. Just added a few touch-ups on Poe, like washes on the gray parts and edge highlights. I also repainted the gray plate on the right nose side orange, as it should be according to film shots. Btw, Vallejo's Game Color "Orange Fire" is an absolute perfect fit for the factory coloring, absolutely undistinguishable.

This looks great!

Kinda got a Kath Rendar look to it. ?
