Wave 6 MVC

By mcworrell, in Star Wars: Armada

With wave 7 dropping in just a few days, I wanted to take a quick look back at the cards that wave 6 brought us. My question for everyone is:

What was the Most Valuable Card (MVC) that wave 6 gave us?

I see three cards that are in contention for the title of MVC.

  • External Racks
  • Boarding Troopers
  • Disposable Capacitors

I think you could make an argument for any one of these cards to take the title, but to me, there is one stand out: External Racks. Here is why:

  • Cost vs. Benefit: It only cost three points and can really cause a good roll from any ship with black dice to be great.
  • It can go on any ship with an ordinance upgrade. Boarding Troopers are good, but we mostly see it combined with other upgrades, I'm looking at you, Avenger.
  • Disposable Capacitors are nice and all, but as a mostly rebel player it isn't that great for me. You slap this upgrade on a Vic and it is great, on a AFMKII or Pelta...its ok but not great.

What do you think? Does my Rebel bias discount Boarding Troopers too much? Or am I just completely wrong?

Cost three points...not two.

External Racks is 3 points, not 2. And I think you discount Disposable Capacitors on the Pelta too much (2 Peltas with DCs is pretty amazing). Another strong contender is Quad Battery Turrets.

But with all that said, I still agree that External Racks is probably the MVC. Quad Battery Turrets is pretty close, though.

One point in favor of External Racks that you left out: it can be used against ships or squadrons!

Disposable Capacitors wins it for me... ESPECIALLY with Wave 7's Heavy Ions on the horizon. Absolute insanity may just ensue.

I was thinking purely in the wave 6 meta, but if you bring in wave 7, external racks is still the the winner for me. Especially on the MC75.

I hear Hondo's been doing pretty well for himself.

Sloane.

(She like changed the whole squadron meta like)

Quad Battery Turrets

Disposable Capacitors

External Racks.

All great upgrade cards.

Honorable Mentions to the Quasar 1 and Torpedo Hammerhead.

It's really between quad battery turrets and external racks, I see quad battery more in my meta than racks, but racks can really bring the pain but as far as upgrade cards go I'm going to have to give it to quad battery turrets.

Sloane, making Imperial Squadrons great again! Huge!

Boarding Troopers.

Yes, it combos too well with Avenger. That's my point. Boarding Troopers finally made everyone stand up and take notice of the ISD1 as an unstoppable combat monster that should scare the living heck out of everything facing it. We're finally in the era of Armada where that opening scene of an Imperial Star Destroyer chasing down and devouring a smaller starship feels less like an inspiration and more like a promise.

And that's not just thanks to Avenger. The reality is that the standard Wave 2 ISD platform is exceptionally well suited to this upgrade.

If you've seen a rise in competitive play of ISDs in your local meta over the last few months, you can directly thank Boarding Troopers for inspiring a great many second looks at the platform it was built for.

If you're rebel biased then your vote should be on this:

I wish I had an opinion. I played waaaay too little to have used any of those cards yet.

Boarding Troopers seems to get the most discussion FWIW.

I think Dcaps was the best card, followed closely by ExRax.
