Norman Withers Deckbuilding Questions

By Duciris, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Norman Withers (Book character) is a Seeker with the following Deckbuilding Options:

  • Seeker cards - level 0
  • Mystic cards - level 1-5
  • Neutral cards - level 0-5
  • up to 5 Mystic cards - level 0

My inquiries are as follows.

  • Should he be a seeker? He only has access to level 0 cards.
  • Is this a misprint? Should he have access to Seeker cards level 1-5?
  • If played this way, is he interesting to play as? Is he survivable? Is he better than Daisy!?

Weigh in. Please!

I feel like his Seeker class makes sense, especially in context to the book. He starts as an academic, obsessed with knowledge and a specific personal mystery, which leads him to gradually be exposed to the mythos and explore forbidden lore and spells. So, it makes sense that he starts as a Seeker and transitions into a Mystic.

There's no reason to believe the card is a misprint, as opposed to a "class change" of sorts. In fact, it has gotten many of us excited about other possible upcoming character that could have similar deckbuilding requirements (Mike McGlen comes up often as a possible Rogue that would transition to Guardian).

I haven't tested a Norman deck extensively yet, but the Seeker class is loaded with excellent level 0 cards, so giving what is effectively a Mystic access to those cards seems like a pretty great combo, especially with Norman's very high Intellect and Willpower stats.

He is fun to play. I don't really see Daisy, Minh or Norman as better or worse than each other. I could argue that Rex is the best character in the game, but I could also argue he is not that far out of line with the other seekers.

I personally like the constraints in building and growing his deck. Its fun.

Norman really likes the new upgraded Scrying, and he can use all the Mystic fight cards and such. While still being able to use Seeker investigate options and other utility effects.

Neat! I look forward to playing him!

I just started him on Carcosa, partnered with Skids. With little to help with fighting and evading, he feels very vulnerable. Skids had to bail me out a few times. Picking only five level 0 Mystics is tough, especially if you really want to run a Delve Too Deep. His 4 Willpower is good, not great for an up-and-coming spell slinger, so I gave him one Holy Rosary. I've got two Shrivelings, but in two scenarios, it only came up once, and I never had an opportunity to use it. No need for Drawn to the Flame or Rite of Seeking -- you could take them for tempo, but you're probably better off leaving room for Blinding Light.

For Seeker cards: his Intellect is great, but I still gave him Milan as an income generator. Mind Over Matter is an auto-include, twice. Anatomical Diagrams is really good, too -- maybe the best way to deal with his signature weakness. I've Got A Plan is okay but highly situational -- resources, clues, and enemies all have to be timed right. Shortcut is really good, and I just like Fieldwork in general.

I'm enjoying him very much. With Skids, it's creating a much different game than I'm used to, where we're avoiding and evading as much as we can, saving our fighting assets for when we really need them. Playing with the top card up is really great, I love that extra choice and cost bonus.

To your final question, certainly not better than Daisy at the start, that's not even a question. I'll get back to you after about twelve XP, though.

Another candidate for transformation is Diana Stanley. Starting as Mystic with level 0 cards, and upgrading to level 1+ Survivor Class

That makes no sense.
