Triple TIE/Ds

By Astech, in X-Wing Squad Lists

With the prevalence of 1 and 2 agility ships in the meta that are utterly dependent on a combination of a single token, positioning or out-damaging one's opponent, I believe the time has come for the TIE/D to rise:

Delta Squadron Pilot (32)
Jamming Beam (maybe Tractor???)
Twin Ion Engine
TIE/D

Delta Squadron Pilot (33)
Flechette Cannon
Twin Ion Engine
TIE/D

Delta Squadron Pilot (34)
Ion Cannon
Twin Ion Engine
TIE/D

Totalling 99 points.

Sure, the entire list is at PS 1. Sure, they only get one token a turn, but there's not a list in the world that can joust that much firepower.

All the meta kings at the moment fold to a stress/ion combination, and the jamming beam is icing on the cake. Overall, I think that Nym, Poe, Miranda, Lowhrick etc all fall to this level of control. My mainn concern is 3 Nus and Quickdraw, but I think closing to range 1 is the key there.

I like the idea. I have played 2 D-Deltas with Ion and QD for a while and it was pretty good. Not 100% sure how the PS1 on all 3 will impact a game, but a good thing always is, that you can use them easily as blocker as well. I would go with 2 Ion and a Tractor (wouldn't need the bit anyway I guess). Just to give you the scary ability to Ion a large ship in 1 turn as well (Dash and Kanan for example).

It is a surprisingly strong list. Lots of people don't know how to handle it.

An example of it doing very well against a world class player.

I played that list (Mk.IIs with rainbow cannons--tractor/flechette/ion) last weekend. Bodied triple Wookiees, and only lost 1 ship to Nym/Miranda pre-TrajSim Nerf. Some luck (evaded like 5-6 damage of the Harpoon Volley), some skill (I had all three ships, none at R1 of each other, all with shots on Nym first round of the engagement).

Say! Rainbow Ds should be the name for the list!

I second this.

Rainbow Ds all the way! This is a crazy fun looking list. The challenge is the low PS, but, everything has a challenge for it.

I suggest you call it the TIE/D Pod Challenge.

Flew Rainbow Ds again today, against Fenn/Lowhhrick/Nym, and again bodied Nym. Tractor beam hit, which got the arc and R1 for my Ion Defender, and then we're off to the races. Finished the game 100-0... one of my TIEs was at 1 HP, but I threw a couple of good blocks with it.

I'm not sure if this is a list which has legs, or if it just surprises people, but they'd be able to handle it if they're familiar with how it works. Still, against a 1-agility ship, the combination can pour in a lot of damage fast.

I personally hate flying higher PS ships than my opponent. I've got a knack for predicting where they'll move, so blocking is my favourite strategy (even with HLC Dash).

Surprise is always a force multiplier. At my Nats last year I had a guy who took 15 minutes to plan a single maneuver because he had absolutely no idea how to approach a Ion Turret + Gunner Ghost with his Nym.

It has the benefit of being tanky enough for any one ship to survive a mistake, and blisterinly strong enough that any mistake from the opponent leads to a loss.
