The Boarding Action

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing Epic Play

Boarding Action

Boarding is a special way to attack a ship. The attacking ship must have the Boarding Icon (a door with a cutting star). Only Large and Huge ships may be boarded.

The action is resolved as is typical for an attack: a comparison of Attack Dice vs. Defense Dice. In this case, however, the attacking ship has Attack Dice equal to its PS/2 (rounded up), and the defending ship has Defense Dice equal to its PS/2 (rounded up). The Defending ship also adds 1 Defense die per equipped crew upgrade.

To perform a Boarding Action, the Defending ship must be Ionized, and the Attacking ship must be in base-to-base contact with it. This does not count as a bump for the Attacking ship. The Attacking ship cannot be Stressed.

Boarding Commander (crew, 1 point): You may change Focuses to Hits when Boarding

Boarding Crew (crew, 1 point): You may add 1 Attack die to a Boarding Attempt.

Zero-G Stormtroopers (crew, 2 points): You may add 2 Attack dice to a Boarding Attempt.

Intruder Countermeasures (mod, 0 points): You may change Focuses to Evades when being Boarded

Even I Get Boarded Sometimes (EPT, -2 point): -3 to PS when being Boarded

Boarding Grapnel (Cannon, 1 point): Attack 3, Range 1. On a hit, cancel all attack Dice and move into base-to-base contact with the target ship. You must perform a free Boarding Action.

If the attack is successful, the ship is successfully boarded. The Defender treats the ship is Destroyed, but it is not removed from the table. It is a derelict; treat it as an obstacle for the rest of the game.

If the attack fails, the Boarders are repelled. The Attacking ship is Stressed, and must discard 1 crew card. The attacker rolls 1 Attack Die. On a crit, the Defender chooses 1 crew upgrade to discard, if applicable.

If it is a tie, neither ship sets a maneuver dial for the next turn, and the Boarding attempt is repeated.

These are excellent. Our group has been trying bits of things like this for our homebrew HotAC missions. Thank for doing the heavy lifting!

You should add,

The boarding player must say in a salty voice, “Avast wench prepare to be boarded!”

Excellent work though, love the Meanie homebrew.

I think boarding mechanics should be what Armada does for their actions. Get within close range, discard boarding upgrade card (which takes up 2 upgrade slots) resolve effect.

OF course boarding should only work on huge ships, you wouldn't board a Lambda Shuttle anymore than you would board an X-wing. Instead you would disable it and/or tractor it into the hangar bay then have troopers search and seize, much like what happened to the falcon when they arrived at the Death Star.

Since I don't play Armada, I don't know the mechanic.

I also see no reason to confine boarding to Huge ships. The Imperial Navy must have some way to board smaller ships in remote systems without a huge ISD hanging around. Fluff aside, Large ships play a bigger role in XWM than Huge ships, so if I limit it to only that class the whole thing becomes sorta pointless.

My main goal, besides of course the narrative element, was to create a unique way to take out a ship. I agree it makes no sense on a stafighter, but I see no technical reason a YT-1300 could not be boarded in zero-G.

For Armada here you go

As for huge ship only that is for simplicity sake, Sure you could say that ships like the VCX-100 have enough room for some sort of brief firefight on the interior (although it would be like a shoot out inside a B-17. But as for IG-2000 aggressor which has no crew slots of a Firespray which has a single flight deck then how do you state which large ships can be boarded and which cannot? For large ships (and small ones) I think it is better to have a " seizure " mechanic than a " boarding " one. Capture it with tractor beams or ion cannons, pull it inside the hangar bay and done, the ship has been seized. But then again that would require something larger than we have now. Something like a Star Destroyer . ;)

Don't get me wrong I think Epic is the place to have boarding actions. Have a double crew upgrade (like wookie commandos) so you can put them on a shuttle. Have it target a huge ship only. When at range 1 of a huge ship discard upgrade and chose one <crew> or <team> upgrade and discard that, or you can have one that targets <hardpoints> <missiles> <torpedoes> instead, as well as one that just deals face up damage.

So, obviously the shuttle should have the boarding icon, but. . .

Shuttles used for boarding of course, but security should be either a team or have the huge ship only restriction if a crew or double crew.

Harpoon is interesting but I am not sure boarding being a must is a good idea. The Snowspeeders didn't board an AT-AT. Luke climbed one, but that was after he was shot down.

None of the other Team upgrades list "Huge Ship only" as a restriction. . .

I made Boarding a must for 2 reasons: (a) I assume that is what you are trying to do in the first place; (b) you have used you Action to fire the cannon so you need a free action to do the Boarding, and (c) it avoids a discussion of "why do normal bumping rules not apply if the attacking ship doesn't Board."

I meant team or huge ship only as team like hardpoint and cargo are only found on huge ships.

rue but can you really see a hardpoint weapon being put on even a large ship. The closest I can think of is the YT-2400 and even that is more of a HLC as the maxi size.

I could see some new hardpoint upgrades that say ‘Huge or Large ship only’ with a FAQ stating hardpoint upgrades are Huge only unless stated otherwise. Maybe. I was more taking about the Cargo and Team upgrades, not that some of these cards do much for Large ships, but there’s potential.

I’d also bet that eventually we will see a mod that allows Large ships to play around with energy tokens.

Well, the card is a Team. I have the Team Icon on it.

If a successfully boarded ship is treated as an obstacle, then can it be destroyed by seismic torpedoes, splash damage and all?

Security team is fine. Security guard I'm thinking needs the Huge Ship only restriction.

By RAW, yep. I like the idea as well. . .

Why do you think that? I was just considering it the reverse of Boarding Party. . .

IMHO capital ships are the ones subject to boarding, not shuttles and small freighters. Those would be seized, taken into the docking bay then searched and seized just like the Falcon in A New Hope. You don't board a shuttle, but shuttles do carry boarding parties and board ships.
