The Pallid Mask's Scrying Lvl3

By Strilar, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I haven't seen this discussed so far, but full spoilers for The Pallid Mask are here:

I noticed something weird though, this pack includes a Lvl 3 version of "Scrying":

For comparison, here's the Lvl 0 version from the core set:

Same cost(1), same nº of charges(3), same scrying(3 cards), it has an extra Intellect icon to commit it to a skill test, and it's activation it's now "fast" instead of a regular action, BUT it comes with a drawback, is it really worth 3XPs?

The only upside is if you're using Agnes Baker you can suffer 1 horror to deal 1 damage, but Agnes already has plenty of ways to gain horror without needing to spend 3XPs. I love to see upgrade versions of already existing cards in AH like ".41 Derringer" or "Shortcut" in this same pack, but this "Scrying" one seems to be a huge disappointment.

Thoughts?

I almost never used Level 0 Scrying because it cost an action every time I wanted to activate it. It is a useful effect but I often found I did not have the time to use it. Changing the activation to a fast action is a huge deal for me and I would definitely consider spending 3 xp for the upgrade.

I agree! The fast action is super good upgrade! I will definitely consider adding this to the deck! Every card that gives extra action are a worth of Gold.

I agree, it is much better than the level zero version of the spell and worth the cost. The reason I rarely use scrying is because I rarely can use the 3 actions to use all its charges so I end up never playing it which has transformed into almost never including it in a deck. I find the weakness kind of meh, 1 horror isn't that huge a deal to a Mystic since they usually have high will (avoiding other sources of horror), high sanity and have options for horror recovery.

Now there is still the question of "do I spend my xp on Level 3 Scrying or will I benefit more by spending it on something else?" That's valid and will vary from deck to deck and will differ in campaign play v standalone mode. We don't have unlimited XP and 3 xp is about 10% of entire campaigns normal xp. I think it depends on what combos you have built into your deck and how much they are dependent on Scrying. Norman prefers to Scry his own deck, and I don't think we have any risk there with the drawback.

Torrent of Power is actually pretty powerful if you use low resource cost spells in your deck like scrying and forbidden knowledge as well. Not so much with event spells or attack spells, but yeah.

Forbidden Knowledge has „secrets“, not „charges“.

I wish this card was fast too (if only playing cards in this game didn't cost an action) but the ability to scry without taking an action once it's on the field is a much needed change to make the card actually playable. But 3 xp? eh.... maybe, I don't know. *shrug*
