Do Any of You Use Custom Sectors?

By dyp100, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I know we're "meant to" be using the Calixis Sector, but have any of you fellow GM's (or players) ever RP'd in your own custom built sector?

I was just wondering if I was the only one who has done this, me and a couple of friends made a nice little sector and we've already planned out a couple of sub-sectors, it's allows for much more customised fluff, IMHO. (And who is to say I can't borrow some stuff from the Dark Heresy rulebooks?) It'd love to here about your own sectors, or even subsectors, and what of your own fluff goes on there?

Encase your wondering, Sub-sectors include:

Hades. (The main sub, home of capital and the Inquisition base, The Hand of Faith.)

Purgatory. (Pretty scummy sub-sector, relatively unused, but me and a friend are doing a custom RP to pad it out a little.)

Inferno. (The sector with the most Ecclesiarchy influence.)

Horizon. (The newest sub-sector, founded in the last crusades, due to having both heavy Mechanicus and Ministorum influence a storm is said to be stirring between the two factions.)

Yes I use the Hadros Sector. I have set it as being close to or otherwise borderignt he Calixis Sector and in fact my PC's have now crossed over to the Calixis Sector after afour and half month warp journey.

The Hadros sector is relatively stable and generally far more civilised and prosperus that Calixis. Its Sector Capital is world called Bellafrax which is really a cross between an Agri world and a Hive world.

It has a number of Sub sectors not all named but so far mentioned...

Bellafrax subsector

Pallas Subsector

Rakemoor Subsector

Worlds mentioned include...

Bellafrax-Capital

Anmar-Hive world

Darantic-Death world

Hades Folly- Feudal World.

We are using Hellheim sector in our sessions. Located to the "north" of the Eye of Terror, some distance away from the Rubicon Straits region of space. Conquered by Valhallan Imperial Guard divisions led by lord-commander Augustin Govorov in early M38. Includes the following regions:

Central subsector is known as Fortress Hellheim. It is a home for fortress worlds Hellheim and Custos, major imperial navy base Lemetti, and is somewhat of a sector's heart.

Other regions are Prosperous Northeast, Western Border (yes, not the most original names gui%C3%B1o.gif ), Core Worlds, Brimstone Nebula, Bleak Reaches and Lost Worlds. Last but not least, there is the Illwinter Realm - small self-proclaimed empire of the Snow Wolves space marine chapter; still servants of the Emperor, but somewhat of a radical sort.

"Blessed" with the presence of a whole coteries of both inquisitors and daemons, the sector is plunged into a never-ending shadow war with dozens of rival cults and factions on both sides vying for supremacy. Certain less than brilliant decisions of the sector ruling elite resulted in a cold civil war between its two governor-militants, the first one being a daemon-possessed clone and second - a woman administrator of inferior origins. On top of that the sector is suffering from food shortage due to the recent loss of its primary agri-world (consumed by Great Unclean Xulux), is being infiltrated by genestealers (agri-world Farlav), and its adeptus mechanicus are divided by a religious schism (forge worlds of Kiy and Barra, migrant fleet "Golden Age").

Oh, and there's currently a war going on for three star systems of the sector (small parallel WH40k tabletop campaign). And the armies of the Imperium are loosing spectacularly. So far the imperials were repeatedly butchered by the Eldar and utterly crushed by the Chaos Space Marines on seven occasions. And don't get me started on their Ork campaign...

So far the Imperium controls the Fortress Hellheim, Core Worlds and Prosperous Northeast, but in other regions things are slowly falling apart.

I use my own Selveria Sector, it's on the spinward side of the Eye of Terror compared to the Calixis Sector.

It is made up of six sub-sectors,

The Levressus sub, is central rimward, with the Sector Capitol Levressus (duh,)

the Solyman sub, situated central coreward with Nova Solyma acting as the sub capitol. This is the sub where most of my Dark heresy game has taken place thus far, from Grand Wulfstan, to Miziree III.

The Pytx Cluster which is Coreward/Spinward, capitoled at Thranx

The Mazzardine Gulf situated Coreward Trailing, capitoled at Icora IV. It borders several small but dangerous Xenos empires, and is has more daemonic activity then any other two subs put togetehr.

The Arnhiem Drifts, which is Rimward/Spinward, capitoled at the masssive Orbital Hive of Port Malkovar, and is where most of the Lomarae Wanderer breed of voidborn call kip, after their small stellar interstellar dominion was forcible incorporated into the Imperium.

And lastly the Jugurthan sub, itss capitol is at Escalot, and this sub has seen better days, as it's well within the range of the Vesh Gell, a viscious gas-giant dwelling breed of xenos that love taking human slaves to aid in their own disgusting reproductive processes.

Bordering the Selveria Sector is a region of the the Halo stars known as the Sandillion Gloom, where all manner of lost human worlds, extinct xenos empires, and other things can be found.

Yes!!!

I created the Aquila Sector:

122 planets/locations, some with detailed back stories, some just names, some just random ideas. Has been the setting for not only Dark Heresy, but our 40K games for a very long time. cool.gif

Seems the forum cuts off the right side - link is here:

I thought I would post here because I really was looking forward to designing a DH sector. I utilize maps, world-creators in a number of my games and find it to be the more dynamic part of being a GM. However, I’m pretty light on 40K fluff (no miniature game experience) and, after looking at the idea, decided to shelve it. While it may be cool to do, I figured I would lose a lot of the great information in many of the books.

Are people simply transplanting the information or coming up with their own fluff/backgrounds/origins for their original settings? What type of information are people finding absolutely necessary for coming up with these locations. One of the reasons I decided not to move my location was that my players would also be new to WH40K so I'd rather stick to the basics/published... at least for now.

I haven't transplanted anything from the Calixis Sector into my Sector. Any references to the 'Lathes' or anything like that I just tend to ignore. If someone buys a Lathe Blade it's because it's called a Lathe Blade, not because it comes from a place called 'The Lathes' or whatever. I'd only consider making my own sector if I had a firm grounding in the 40K fluff. I really wouldn't attempt it if I was new to the universe, but if the players were new it wouldn't matter as much as they'll basically take whatever you give them.

Unfortunately 40K is so scattered and broken that it can be difficult to learn enough (from scratch) to go and create a detailed Sector of space. There s a lot of reading to do - I'm making all my stuff up thanks to well over a decade of playing 40K proper. Give it a go if you want, but if you're just starting out then yeah, stick to the published Sector. It'll take a lot of the worry out of your hands as you won't be both trying to create interesting scenarios/plot hooks and trying to create a whole world at the same time.

I wonder as Ubernatus mentioned. Did you create local organizations for your sectors? (Imperium or else)

I am in the process of creating a sector which would be half-way between an Imperial sector and an unclaimed expanse. So far however I'm going with the official settings and my own sector is mostly for fun.

I'm still on my first DH campaign, set in the Calixis Sector for convienience. When this one wraps up, I'll probably play my second campaign in a home-made sector. I'll be going Ordo Xenos next time, so I want to set it in the Ultima Segmentum in order to include all of the classic 40K xenos.

I created a sector; the Conundrum Sector; but I limited my campaign to the scope of just one tiny system within that sector, and that is the Obvisca System. The Conundrum Sector is isolated from the greater Imperium, though still quite loyal to the Golden Throne. It is located forty-seven light-years Trailing of the Calixis Sector, with a Rimward shift that puts it just this side the "border" of the Halo Stars. The Conundrum Sector has been forgotten, lost to the Imperium since the coming of the warp storms that wracked the galaxy during the decades of an epoch known as the Reign of Blood.

There are three habitable planets in the Obvisca System…

Obvisca III (locally known as Perdita) is third from the system's sun, and it is a hellish world of unstable tectonics, volcanism, mica dust storms, and rad-ash rain. Once (long, long ago) the manufacturing hub of the Obvisca System, a catastrophic nuclear accident in the deep-forges of the Machine Cult wrought great planet-wide destruction, and Perdita is now a penal colony where criminals and other social outcasts/cast-offs are transported as a means of managing the population:resources ratio on Obvisca IV. No one willingly travels to Perdita (well, Acolytes may…grudgingly…in pursuit of some obscure clue, culprit, or piece of archaeotech).

Obvisca IV (locally known as Antredes) is an ocean Hive-World. +++REDACTED+++

Obvisca V (locally known as Hora) is an winter hell, its landscapes covered over with glacier mountains, barren snow-swept tundras, and frozen seas.

Much can be done on one planet. In fact, and entire campaign arc spanning many months (both in real and game time) can play out on just one planet, as long as you stop to consider some broad details first, only filling in the details as they come to you over time. I know it's tough, as a GM, to not run with an idead as soon as its spark ignites your imagination, but try to look at the long run, the big pay off of a truly grand conundrum being resolved. The campaign I ran on Antredes ran once a week for seven months, and I used it as a springboard during National Novel Writers Month to lay down a 86,000-word rough draft in just five weeks.

Haven't fleshed out the sector yet, but do have one planet I use for all of my Dark Heresy and Only War games.

Avernus is the subsector capitol, a Hive World of massive cities separated by sprawling salt flats. Exports of promethium, salt, and metals have made the world quite wealthy. It has three major hive cities; Hive Nessus is the capitol city, Hive Malbolge is a major manufacturing area, and Hive Dis is the largest population center and the home of the largest promethium refineries. The PDF and Imperial Guard from Avernus are well supplied, with a large number of the forces noble heirs volunteering to serve.

A civil war erupted when the planetary governor, Lord Severus Grave, declared the planet's secession from the Imperium of Man for reasons still classified. 60% of the Imperial Guard forces, 90% of the PDF, a sizable army of mercenaries, an armada of reavers, and the aid of the renegade Black Hand astartes allowed the traitors to conquer much of the world. The few loyal troops left eventually held only Hive Dis, desperately struggling against vastly better supplied and more numerous forces until Imperial Navy forces broke the blockade.

Cadian Shock Troops and Elysian Drop Troopers supplemented the Avernus "Avengers" and a bloody push forward began. Talented agents of the Inquisition managed to compromise the Black Hand's communication network and wipe them out, while a series of daring strikes assassinated the secessionist generals in their fortified palaces. Grave's men were soon pushed back into Hive Nessus. With orbital bombardment out of the question due to the valuable and volatile promethium deposits under the city, brutal street fighting ensued. In a desperate last act of spite, Lord Grave attempted to summon daemonic aid, but had his ritual disrupted by joint work by the Avernus Avengers and an Ordo Malleus cell.

The war lasted just under two years, ending in a loyalist victory. The world has gone back to heavy production of raw materials, and the Avernus Avengers have quickly earned a reputation across multiple sectors as cunning and fearless troops with a knack for devastating strikes in light vehicles. The local Navy squadrons were reduced to pitiably low numbers, but are often called first for high priority atmospheric bombings across the next two sectors. The people of Avernus are still distrusted, but are working hard to prove themselves.

The sector also has an icy Forge World that I need to flesh out, several Inquisitiorial holdings in an asteroid belt, and a world covered in xenos ruins. There's also a trio of Astartes chapters active in the area (the Rust Ravens, an Iron Hands successor, and an Imperial Fists successor) who are largely slipping into renegade vigilante action as part of a secret society known as the Brotherhood of Mysteries. Two traitor warbands also operate in this area of space, the Platinum Ideal and the Sons of Luna.

I less made up a new sector, as much as I blatantly ripped off a published one. I've built up the Cyclops Cluster - one of the subsectors of the Gothic Sector) to be the setting for the various 40k rpgs I run. I've made the following hand outs for my players, which needs to be severly updated after a number of fairly cataclysmic in game events :D
