Supreme Scathing Tirade / Inspiring Rhetoric Question

By Rithuan, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi everyone!

I have a question related to 'Supreme Scathing Tirade' or 'Supreme Inspiring Rhetoric'.

Is it possible to use this talent twice or even three times per round? Considering that a character has one action and up to two maneuvers per round, it's not clear in the rules if the character can only take one (or three) Scathing Tirade as a maneuver.

Also, related to the first question: Does the set back (or boost dice) stack, considering the Improved version of Scathing Tirade/Inspiring Rhetoric?

Thanks again for your help!

RAW, using those talents multiple times in a turn would be allowed, but I'd argue against it for narrative and logical purposes.

The full descriptions for the Improved versions of the talents specifically state that their effects don't stack with themselves.

Yes, but only if you're an Ithorian. :P

I'm sorry. I didn't get that.

A joke. Members of that species have four mouths.

Hahaha, now I get it. :D

Back on topic: Has anyone allowed the multiple uses (x2 or x3) of Scathing Tirade / Inspiring Rhetoric? How was your experience as a GM / player?

Personally, I wouldn't allow it - though I might let players combine Supreme Scathing Tirade and Inspiring Rhetoric for speeches (by spending one maneuver and one action or two maneuvres, as appropriate) that simultaneously terrify enemies and encourage allies.

I had a player using both Field Commander (Improved) and Inspiring Rhetoric on the same turn, regularly. She was buffing the rest of the party like mad, but then couldn't contribute to combat herself.

And yes, you can use it three times. You dont get the bonus from blacks all three times, but you can hit them with the strain. Even better, let your politico unleash the Unmatched Expertise first and they suddenly become Gunnery Sargent Hartman, peeling the paint off the walls.

Also ignore all those naysayers - it's no more devastating than a marauder going to town, especially when you figure the points necessary to get to that point where you can do massive damage. It's the coolest thing about a Politico and the core Cool Thing they can do. Why are people so quick to nerf it? Let your politico scath away!

Thank you so much for the feed back, Desslok.

My main concern is that I don't recall any other Spec that allows 2 or 3 attacks in one round. You might attack with 2 guns one target by default, and if you are Gunslinger, you might attack 2 targets. But 3 attacks directly at strain, without soak? It seams too much.

On the other hand, you need a lot of advantages. And each advantage affects 1 target. Sometimes this is not possible, even with a great dice pool. (you might get several successes and no advantages).

I'm going to review the other threads to inform my decision. Thanks again, and I'm still looking for more experiences/opinions.

I used to think as you do that this talent was major broke, however if you have a look at a range of rolls possible with a reasonable 3 yellow 2 green (coercion 3 willpower 5), you dont get as much damage as you would think, and spamming it 3 times a round is burning serious strain for the person making the check. That being said it is great against groups of minions. Its major problem is the swings between getting a lot of advantage(letting you stack damage on your targets) or lots of success letting you spread the damage around , roll 5 success, 1 advantage and have 3 targets you do a grand total of 2 dmg on 1 and 1 damage on two. Toss a grenade and you can do a lot more than that.

As GM though you can call out that the target needs to understand you, which then limits you to intelligent life, that knows basic, animals are now outside your scope.

Ok. If we would not have already a social character in the group, I so much would now build a 1000 xp politico/agitator
