If there were to be another fighter pack it should be Avenger (with snipe), Scimitar Assault Bomber, Assault gunboat & TIE droid (for some interesting activation mechanics).

Maybe Missile boat as well.

K & U wings for rebels.

I did some theorising & I could find stats & keywords for all these ships that would make them mechanically worthwhile in play terms. Hence why snipe for the Avenger. Could also do the royal tie interceptor.

FFG has taken spam to be movng super fast with little or no offense. So...

Slam: When activated by a squadron command, you may move twice instead of attacking.

Word it it up and call it good. If somebody wants to AFFM/Vector 4 of these and send them at two speed 4/5 maneuvers and put them way out in the damaged zone (or to catch an escaping ship), let them.

Yoy realize those are both Imperial ships, right? Anyway, it is basically a fighter version of the Lambda. Not sure why you threw in the V-Wing.

Anyhow, I have recently been playing TIE Fighter again. I also bought a new CH Fighterstick (LOVE IT - just need to find key bindings for it somewhere...) that I will also be using for Star Citizen down the track! My eldest son has been going through flight training, he likes the Gunboat! ^SWELLS with pride^ but his favourite is the TIE Defender (it's way easier to fly!).

I don't know...yes all TIE Fighter missions are fun to fly, but I really really get all giddy when Mr. Briefing Officer starts with: "You will be flying an Assault Gunboat designated..."

Hehe, both!

Gunboat Designations for the player were Mu and Tau.

While Rho and Nu were for NPC reinforcements.

Man...it got confusing when defector Gunboats were thrown into the mix.

Why are people so obsessed with the Gunboat?

In most depictions it looks like a generic ship from a movie ripping off Star Wars.

Cause Nostalgia is a powerful force. It is a the same way with the dreadnought and carrack cruiser. And the dil... i mean Lancer frigate. Also the AFmk1 (I only really like the type 6 variant as the other ones just look like a dreadnought with a sensor array evil goatee and fish fin to make it fit in with the mon cal ships.

But I think. Particularly when you're playing TIE Fighter, you start out with the classic TIE Fighter - highly manouverable but flying death trap! The same thing with the TIE Interceptor and TIE Bomber (for the most part).

Now, the moment you get the Gunboat the first thing you'll notice is that it is 'relatively' slow at 90MGLT (TIE Bomber being 80MGLT). BUT the beauty of the Gunboat is the fact that you now have very powerful shields AND a very interesting Energy Management System that lets you fine-tune the starfighter's performance according to your immediate needs!

Need more speed to intercept some pesky rebels? Dump all cannon power into shields then re-direct cannon recharge to engines! 135MGLT (edit: 116MGLT?) Then when you're within striking distance to the target, shunt back power from the shields into your cannons and reset the cannon recharge to 'neutral' then start putting the hurt on some scum!

What!? Not enough speed you say? Ok then, after dumping all cannon power into shields, re-direct BOTH cannon and shield recharge to engines! Because the Gunboat's shields can hold so much energy, you won't lose all that much 'overall power'.

...then there's the Beam Weapon you can re-direct to engines later on...

Also, this is the first opportunity for players to get up close and insolent VS capital ships! Blast those turbolaser turrets to bits, then whittle away the shields and disable that big fat squid! Muwahahahha!!!!

The Gunboat also provides the first taste of "special operations" beyond being tethered to a mothership. You hyperspace in, pour on the damage, then get the heck out! Hehe. Mothership? What mothership?? Don't need one! Indpendence is a great thing!

My first Star Wars game was TIE Fighter, and the moment I fell in love with the Gunboat when I saw two of them from Rho squadron dropping out of hyperspace in pursuit of an X-Wing. "MAN...they look AWESOME - I WANT one of those!"

For me, I dont like all "old stuff" but the look and the role of the gunboat always appealed to me.

It also adds a lot of diversity and realism to the lore.

Sheesh that one mission where you have to defend a convoy from Y wings with proton torps... and they put you in a freaking TIE bomber! Ouch!

Hear, hear! Yeah, the Gunboat is just such a versatile platform! The fact that they can go just about anywhere and perform missions from recon to heavy strike to capture escort is awesome! Honestly, when I first saw TIE Fighter, I wasn't so sure..."flying for the 'BAD' guys?? ...dunno..." Those black solar panels and dark trim lines sure look mean! Enter the Gunboat - ..."ohh yeah! I could sure do my part to keep the peace with this!"

Haha yeah!!! Felt like a demotion - where'd my Gunboat go!?? Took me a few goes to get it right!

First off, swap your concussion missiles out for either proton torpedoes or rockets - the idea is to soften the initial blow as much/quickly as you're able to.

At mission start, set thrusters to max - then immediately re-direct cannon power to engines. Fly towards the right-most corvette, almost reaching it's engines, then turn sharply and set cannon recharge to maximum and shoot down the Y-Wings' proton torpedo salvo with your lasers (well as many of the torpedoes as you're able to).

Then just as the Y-Wings close with you, switch to and fire a rocket/torpedo at each one (as many as you're able to - you don't even need to acquire a warhead lock) to weaken/destroy as many of them as you can. If you manage to save the corvette from this first strike, things will be a lot easier as the Y-Wings need to break off and then set up for a 2nd attack run against it, instead of going straight for the hapless containers.

The corvette also helps you to blast down the weakened Y-wings with its two turbolaser batteries.
