Can Imperial Double Firesprays Work?

By HealOverTime, in X-Wing

I actually had some luck with imperial kath with a lone wolf and agent kallus.

Its a lot of health and greens to run through with that much greed modification, Moreso vs two ship lists.

nowhere near time walk asajj but still a different play style for imperial

What do you usually team up with her?

I fixed my Bounty Hunter cards to have as many harpoons as possible. Opponents never really check :P

Reload option for Firespray would be interesting...not sure how useful. But maybe more used than scavenger crane.

(100)

•Kath Scarlett (50) - Firespray-31
•Lone Wolf (2), Harpoon Missiles (4), Ion Bombs (2), •Agent Kallus (2), •Slave I (0), Long-Range Scanners (0), Extra Munitions (2)

Sienar Specialist (25) - TIE Aggressor
Twin Laser Turret (6), Lightweight Frame (2)

TLTs to stay at range, while kath comes up the middle and flies past to mostly use the back arc.

I fail to sense the second Firespray in your list. No ship of that size has a cloaking device!

Yeah I know, don’t think it’s worth fielding 2 since lone wolf and kallus are unique. You really need those green mods and generally take an evade every turn just to have it punch at its weight.

I've seen something similar do fairly well with:

  • Kath Scarlet
    • Slave 1
    • A Score To Settle
    • Agent Kallus
    • Long Range Scanners

Either field her as is (40 points all-up) or stretch 6 points from somewhere for Harpoon Missiles & Extra Munitions. Either way, she's incredibly good in a one-on-one fight against a specific opponent (a score to settle pairs with her ability really well) - the trick is building the rest of your list to get her that fight.

Actually with some some thought and new releases, considering this pairing

(100)

•Kath Scarlett (40) - Firespray-31
•A Score To Settle (0), •Agent Kallus (2), •Slave I (0), Long-Range Scanners (0)

•Test Pilot "Blackout" (39) - TIE Silencer
Trick Shot (0), Advanced Sensors (3), Primed Thrusters (1), •First Order Vanguard (2), Autothrusters (2)

•"Countdown" (21) - TIE Striker
Adaptive Ailerons (0), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Having toyed with Imperial Firesprays a lot, I've concluded that all of the named pilots cost too much for what you get. Given its action weaknesses, comparatively weak dial, and middling resilience, the best way to make it work is make it as unattractive a target as possible. Part of that involves making it cheap and accompanied by more classically threatening ships, and part of that is through careful upgrade selection.

The best Imperial Firespray I've come up with so far is this:

Bounty Hunter (33) 42
--Rebel Captive
--Andrasta
--Bomblet Generator
--Countermeasures

Captive and Countermeasures represent my effort to make it an unpalatable target (and resistant to missiles). Bomblets contribute some damage, but more importantly add area control and make the ship difficult to pursue.

As for wingmen, my go-to has been:

Soontir Fel (27) 35
--Push the Limit
--Royal Guard TIE
--Stealth Device
--Autothrusters

Countdown (20) 22
--Adaptive Ailerons
--Lightweight Frame

Fel is Fel. Very threatening and distracting. Either he takes heat from the Firespray (and dodges 99% of it in fine Fel fashion), or he is left alone to wreak havoc.

Countdown I fly in formation with the Firespray. He, too, is an unattractive target resistant to missiles--but 3 reds can go a long way, and 22 is a cheap price tag.

EDIT: But to answer the OP question? No, I don't think dual Imp Sprays can work. It isn't possible to outfit both of them as unpalatable targets--too many of the necessary pieces are unique, and there aren't enough points left over to fit a very strong ace that can draw fire and/or carry a game alone.

Actually, the question is: Can single Imperial Firespray work?

Yes it can. The list I mentioned is 43-10, and the Firespray does carry its weight.

It would probably work against - the Fly Casual Nice Guy.

But does it let the Wookiee win?

You can fly two bounty hunters and Vader in his TIE.

Whether or not twin Imp. Firesprays are competition winners or not they are still fun to fly and the neigh sayers can just go fly Scum cos not much skill is needed...muhahahhaa

I could see a case for a 35-point Bounty Hunter with either Tail Gunner or Tactician, Slave-1 and Long-Range Scanners.

If I was gonna do dual imp sprays, I would just go for an alpha strike list.

Kath Scarlet (38)
Crack Shot (1)
Fleet Officer (3)
Harpoon Missiles (4)
Bomblet Generator (3)
Guidance Chips (0)
Andrasta (0)

Boba Fett (39)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Ion Cannon (3)
Systems Officer (2)
Harpoon Missiles (4)
Extra Munitions (2)
Guidance Chips (0)
Slave I (0)

Total: 100

Kath moves, tosses a focus to Boba. Then Boba moves at PS10 and supplies a lock to Kath and he takes a lock. Two full modded harpoons. Next round, go for double modded range 1. After that drop a bomb and go for rear shot it. Ion on Boba for any PS11 that you cant lock, or Mirandas that you don't want escaping. If Boba Ions, and Kath rolls a crit that is cancelled. That is a dead duck.

If only they could have flight-assist astromech :P

I've been using Kath Scarlet quite a bit on and off with a slightly better than 50/50 success rate so far. The Kath build stays more or less the same (only the EPT keeps changing), but I keep changing the ships she is partnered with. Currently I'm favouring either Rexlar Brath or a TIE Shuttle/Gunboat combo, but dual Firespray was one of my other variants:

Kath Scarlet – Adaptability, Mangler Cannon, Ion Bombs, Rebel Captive, Ion Pulse Missiles, Guidance Chips, Slave 1, Extra Munitions

Boba Fett - Push the Limit, Tactician, Engine Upgrade

Total = 100pts

I've not tested this variant yet but I might do next time I can get some games in. I know Kath works very well at throwing Ion and stress around, and Boba can contribute to the stress total too as well as being a bit more flexible with his pilot ability and Engine Upgrade.

Ultimately I don't think dual Firespray can be competitive but certainly with the amount of ways there are to tailor them you can use one as the basis of a competitive list.
