So 4 Crimson Squadron Pilots with no upgrades comes it at an even 100. You get 360 arc turrets, large base and low PS for blocking and 48 points of hull/shield to chew through.

Is this the strongest generic swarm now? Or are 4 Wookies still better?

That is...A LOT of HP. But, I think 4 wookies would be better because they have more dice and can get at least a few dice mods, plus reinforce. Now, 3 Bombers with a decent loadout? That's my jam.

The problem is that whilst you've got 4 turrets, you've got 4 2-dice turrets.

With only 8 attack dice, and only focus or target lock, you're looking at a maximum damage realistic damage output of 6 damage a turn - meaning even an agility 0 target like a decimator or ghost can take 2 turns of fire from your entire squad and probably not care.

More importantly, that 8 dice is split up into 4 2-dice attacks, rather than the smaller number of 3-dice attacks or 4-dice attacks you see in most squads. Find yourself shooting at a target with a reinforce token, or worse yet, autothrusters, and you are basically throwing dice for the heck of it rather than from any realistic chance of hitting.

Case in point; even with no tokens at all, an agility 3 target with autothrusters will dodge a focused 2-dice attack over 80% of the time - meaning if all four bombers fire their turrets into a protectorate fighter, you've got about a 50% chance of not hurting it at all with your entire squad's shooting. And that's assuming no range defence bonus for range 3, no focus tokens, nothing.

As noted, the fact that 4 bombers gives you literally no equipment at all is the problem. Dropping to 3 lets you take stuff like fire control or accuracy corrector to make those turrets hurt a bit more, or antipursuit lasers or ion projectors to make blocking more effective, or, you know, bombs.
