Resolving tally

By DJRAZZ, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hey guys I was wondering. I have never played a single game of Destiny outside of my home. I do watch TTS from time to time. Do you guys resolve your character and upgrade damage as soon as you can or do wait and try and roll in both characters to resolve everything together? I do understand that sometimes chaining strategies do require one to wait and setup before resolving. But I always seem to roll in a character and it's upgrades, resolve and then roll in the second character and it's upgrades and resolve. I have always wondered if doing this is actually playing this game the wrong way by good players' standards. I guess my thought is if I don't resolve my good roll it will get mitigated while I am trying to roll in more damage. The people who play with me, my family and friends, play this way as well. But they have been following my lead. Am I teaching this game badly?

Like everything in the game its a cost/risk, benefit equation.

If you have a good roll, based on what you know about your opponents deck and there position, eg cards in hand, resources or dice in the pool, how likely are they to be able to mitigate you.

If you have dice with modifiers maybe you need to roll in both characters to be sure to get the base side you need.

If you're nit rolling great then you might want to roll in all your dice to get the most benefit from your discards to reroll.

If you can resolve a dice for resources to then play another upgrade that's certainly worth doing before rolling in your second character.

When is rolling in all your dice nit a good idea?

  • when you're playing against blue hero and they have a melee side in the pool.
  • when you're playing against blue villain and have already rolled multiple blanks.
  • Playing against blue hero showing some damage dice the same icon you're trying to roll and they are holding back one resource.
  • When you have only one base side and one or more plus sides.

There's more but those are some of the bigger blow out instances.

Its also important to understand if taking one action more or less is going to help or hurt your tempo and position in the game. For example if your opponent has a planetary uprising out then there is no time to be taking extra actions you need to be as efficient as possible to try and claim and prevent that extra two damage.

largely depends on how many mitigation cards ive seen yet.

If its still somewhat early and i havnt seen anything along the lines of He Doesnt Like You or Sound The Alarm, i rarely hang onto good die results.
If i have already seen like 3-4 of those cards, generally im more safe to hang onto them a bit longer as the odds of him having more are low.

There are so many factors that come into play here: As stated, how much mitigation has been played against you? How good are your dice as is. Does your second character have same-typed modifier dice that might be hard to resolve without your first character's dice? How badly do you want to claim the battlefield? Do you want to see what upgrades your opponent plays first?

My general approach is that I'm going to want as many of my dice in my pool as possible to maximize re-roll benefit. But if I have good dice sitting in my pool, I'll probably resolve them ASAP so they don't get removed.

So it sounds to me like I am playing it a bit safe, which is not like me. But it also sounds like my gut has been right because I have been playing against heavy mitigation decks. Thank guys.
