The latest article on the Stormtrooper unit says this:

The Stormtroopers Unit Expansion will be released at the same time as the Star Wars: Legion Core Set and seven other expansions

Counting the Rebels Expansions and Imperial Expansions we have a total of only 6 expansions.

Could this mean that we may get Special Forces Units in time for launch?

I don't know for sure, but i expect the other two are the dice and maneuver tool sets.

Yes, but only seven or eight times. At least this topic will finally be put to rest when the game launches. I figure the questions about scale and Imperial Assault compatibility will go on for years.

I just got confirmation from the FFG twitter account:

"Alongside the Core, there will be dice, movement tools/range rulers, and three each Imperial and Rebel expansions"

Ha ha... before i realised this i rang my flgs and blithely said to preorder all the initial legion expansions...

Now i find out theres 8 of them.
