Beating Harpoons w/ Dash

By terrymac94, in X-Wing

So I've been thinking..

If Harpoons are so prominent in today's meta, why not use the 'Expert Handling' EPT?

Seems like the right time to pull out this lightly used card for some competitive play:

"ACTION: Perform a barrel roll. If you do not have the (barrel roll) action icon, receive 1 stress token. You may then remove 1 target lock from your ship."

Don't know what ya'll are thinkin', but personally I'm gonna test some Dash builds with this.

Let me know what YOU think :)

Countermeasures.....

But man, I hate playing with Dash. Its so **** stupid.

Because you're spending two points for a card that only helps you in one matchup. If you're facing Wookiees that don't even have a Target Lock action, you're getting no benefit.

If you look at the prominent builds you have the following:

1) NymMiranda - Won't help. They will be moving after you an will secure a TL after you.

2) Imperial Alpha Strike. Same as above.

3) Rebel Alpha Strike. Same as above.

4) Deadeye Rho's. Can't get rid of focus.

5) Deadeye Scurrgs. Can't get rid of focus.

6) Wookies. No TL to strip.

7) 3x boats + QD. You can only strip one TL, you still have 2-3 others shooting at you.

8) Kannan + Fenn. Fenn coordinate means he is TL after you move or boosting into range 1 of you.

So in short, I think it has limited utility over the function that lonewolf will provide in a variety of matches.

The problem you are facing is that Dash is PS 7. Miranda is PS 8, and Nym is PS 10. So you barrel roll and shed a TL, but then they TL you again. I mean, I guess it helps a little, but those two points are better spent on Countermeasures.

Better is to put Countermeasures on Dash and pair him with VI Poe (9) with Black One and BB-8.

Countermeasures is better, but can only be used once (unless you regain it with a Scavenger Crane). For that reason, Expert Handling is worth considering if only for the ability to reuse it.

I can see it being useful against ships that like to spend 2 turns building up the optimal attack, e.g. Nu Squadron Pilots with Long Range Scanners that target lock turn one and then focus turn 2 when in range for fully-modded shots. By ditching a target lock turn 1, they will have to re-aquire turn 2 and they lose some power from their shots. With any luck, you might have got into range 1 by then and be too close for them to use their Harpoons. This isn't something you will be able to pull off indefinitely though and you might just be better off taking the Countermeasures and focusing to try and limit the damage from the first attack run.

In my experience, Countermeasures+keeping an obstacle between Dash and at least part of the enemy squad (most Harpoon carriers aren't exactly unpredictable) is usually enough. Drop a TL, and tank the other(s) with 4 greens, LW and 2 Focus. I haven't tested this vs. Nym Miranda yet, but it has survived several encounters with Imperial and Scum alpha.
