These fora are a weird set of animals. I come here multiple times a day to get a little bit of an X-Wing hit, because I just don't get to play often enough to get my fix. But when there's broken stuff going on in the game, coming here really doesn't do it for me anymore. I try, in these trying times, to limit myself to harmless and actually consistently positive subfora such as the painting forum, but there never seems to be enough going on to sate my hunger. First world problems, amiright? But real, all the same.
I am a very casual player: one Regional, two team tournaments, one SC, a handful of kit tournies, and a Hanger Bay since starting in Wave Six. I play what I like, and do...okay. I'm a decent pilot, but my dice are notoriously streaky. I have a semi-unconscious bias against running meta lists, even if they are ships that I actively enjoy flying - I'm looking at you, JM5K. And I now find myself waffling on the upcoming Seattle Regional.
My FLGS ran a (very small) kit tourney the night Wave 12/13 dropped. I ran Nym (sans Genius)/Crimson Leader/Zeb (TIE + Sabine) against a variety of X-Wings, Silencers, and Gunboats, and took the whole thing. Easily. I felt a little bad about how easily and thoroughly I devestated my opponents that night, but it was my first tournament win, so I figured it what the heck. First time anyone had seen that list, or flown most of their own lists. I got lucky, right? Over the next few weeks, I flew that list, or variations thereof, against a wider range of opponents of widely varied skill levels. And I wrecked them all. I'm *not* that good. About that time, I became aware of the Genius interaction. I tried that a couple times. I even tried out the Nymranda that's going around. OMMFG. And with every game, I felt worse and worse about subjecting my worthy opponents to that list.
I went for this version of bombing madness largely to remove the variance from my dice. I mean, i've posted about my ability to blank on Harpoon Missiles. My one SC, I had an MoV of something like 74.... I hate dice. But I love flying little plastic ships. So. Bombers. Automatic damage, or make you roll for me. Obviously, it works. But if *I* can go 15/0, something is wrong.
I may fly my original iteration at the Regional. It lacks many of the more egregiously broken elements of the current flaming forum cancer (Genius and Miranda, for those still reading). And it to a large extent removes the dice from my hands, which may give me a fighting chance at something better than the absolute bottom tables. But then, I am under no illusions about my chances at the top tables, even with a semi-broken list. And so I begin to ask myself if, since I will most likely be playing against folk who like myself are there simply for a nice, long day of plastic crack, maybe I shouldn't just take a trio of StarVipers. Embrace variance, learn to accept thirty-seven blank defense dice in a row. At the very least, not contribute to what is seemingly an increasingly prevalent NPE.
And this then is the whole point of this rambling, pointless post. To simply chime in, add my two cents, join the rising chorus of voices calling out to FFG to do *something* to keep this lovely, addictive, entertaining little game moving in pleasant directions. I may fly casual, but tournaments are still an awful lot of fun. Let's try to help keep them that way. Rumors of an emergency Monday announcement notwithstanding, I reckon that one more voice today can't hurt. Right?
