Why are you doing this to China ?

By Gabriel 亮君, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Dear FFG Managers :

I'm a regular FFG funs in China. We are all excited about the news of the Arkham Horror: The Card Game's Chinese translation recently.

But the quality of the translation of the game has disappointed us.

The Chinese translation of AHLCG is SUCKS !!!

For example :

The time and number of games on the game box are misprint.

The instruction does not correspond with the card.

The grammar is not correct.Even though I'm Chinese, I need to read English to understand the game.

Some of the translation errors, such as translating the WITCH into a MAID or translating the SERVANTS into a DOGFACE.

This is some screenshot of some of the problems we found in BBS in China.(The BBS is called table top games of Baidu Tieba )

The web of the original is https://tieba.baidu.com/p/5522247240

Since our BBS is not allowed to send multiple images,I will continue to make up the pictures.

Assmodee has made A LOT OF mistakes in tabletop games 's Chinese translation.

The Chinese translation of Star Wars: Imperial Assault is sucks!

The Chinese translation of Star Wars: Destiny is sucks!!

The Chinese translation of Mansions of Madness: Second Edition is sucks!!!

The Chinese translation of Arkham Horror: The Card Game is TOTALLY SUCKS!!!!

THIS GAME'S TRANSLATION IS BULL **** !!!!!

Currently,Assmodee does not give our Chinese Players ANY FEEDBACK.WE WILL CONTINUE TO DEFEND OUR RIGHTS !!!

Please pay attention to the quality of your products in China,OTHERWISE PLEASE GET OUT OF China !!!

THANK YOU !

To the professionals who worked at Asmodee and FFG, this is serious.

I'll quote what I wrote on BGG.com:

I know Chinese and I've been in the community for years.

Arkham Horror card game Chinese edition is as bad as Star Wars Destiny Chinese ed and Imperial Assualt Chinese ed, if not worse.

The publisher keeps pushing limit and it blowed right up in its face.

Their localization seems to be translation with least effort, by someone without proficiency or passion, sended off to printer with no proofing.

Even done poorly, the product took them a year to hit the Chinese market.

Translation errors, "misspell", and inconsistency are ridiculous in Asmodee's product in China. Erratum out several months after a product up for sale.

If you still care for the market, stop this *****.

The problem is serious for sure. But on this particular point, for what it's worth, Agnes actually is The Waitress, not The Witch, so Maid isn't so far off.

(and admittedly, I'm making an assumption as to what this is referring to, based on the posted picture)

Allow me to start off by saying I don't read, let alone understand Chinese. All I know about the language is that at one point, there were two different dialects: Mandarin, spoken in mainland China, and Cantonese, spoken in Hong Kong.

Your plight sucks. If I were you, I'd send Asmodee my resume, and inform them that I am available to translate, because they obviously can't

I don't need to read Chinese to see that Mob Enforcer's translation is dead wrong. There simply shouldn't be a combat icon in there.

Someone on BGG translated that one. It says "Attack. You get Fight +1 during this attack."

It's Knife's first ability, then.

to the OP: Just so you are aware, neither FFG not Asmodee respond directly to anything on the Forums here. There are links to message them directly on the FFG site. That said, that truly does sound like a really bad problem. :(

Not entirely accurate. Mandarin and Cantonese are separate languages. Cantonese uses traditional characters, Mandarin uses simplified (usually). Both have dialects the same as English would - different pronunciations and terminology usually based on region. However there are other Chinese languages spoken in the country than just these two.

You are all good people and thank you for your understanding of Chinese players.

With our efforts, Assmodee decided to re-create the five cards in the game and issue them to us.

But for a huge translation error, these five cards are not enough.

It is expected that the management of FFG will help us to achieve justice.

Some of us have complained to Assmodee in French.

I hope that FFG management can put pressure on Assmodee Chinese company.

This time one of the five ERRATA cards released by Assmodee is STILL WRONG.

We are really desperate. We can only come here to speak. Thank you ,all of you my friends.

I am an English teacher in China, and actually, there are many different languages & dialects spoken across China. The official language of the entire country is Mandarin, but Cantonese is spoken not just in Hong Kong, but across a lot of Southern China. There are additional regional languages spoken is Western China, Tibetan China, Inner Mongolia, and Taiwan. I could definitely help FFG/Asmodee with getting games properly translated into Mandarin.

Ironically they print everything there.

The problem is not with the printing, it's with the translation and proofreading. I know the French translator and at least one proofreader, and I can tell you the deadlines are short and the compensation is pretty pitiful (so only fans would take up the job). And players are quick to complain loudly about even small mistakes (these ones are big, so you really need to keep complaining about them).

Wow sorry to hear there are so many problems. It's a fun game and translation issues would certainly make it troublesome. I certainly empathize as I have a few games that were translated from French. It's a closer dialect so the grammar is less of an issue but it certainly makes it tough. Have you guys emailed and phoned FFG to ask them if there is some way to get this under control. Ive found them quite eager to help and extremely open to hearing a person through.
