Tournament Point Costs: an appeal for an adaptive, low cost, fix

By Pewpewpew BOOM, in X-Wing

Work ramped up and I’ve been out of my FLGS and these forums for a bit. I’ve been catching up on the nerf & health comments here of late, and I keep coming back to something that I and others have posed before...

Many issues could be amended by FFG issuing a PDF with alternate tournament point costs for pilots and upgrades. It woukd be free for everyone and avoid folks having to learn the reworded versions for everything or the need to buy stuff you may not want in order to get the fix cards.

Such a document can be updated before each tourney season as needed and has the “potential” to significantly mitigate power creep if it is done well. OP issues are not about the effectiveness of any given pilot, upgrade, or interaction. It is about these things IN RELATION TO the amount of points paid for them.

And FFG could make a squad builder and declare it mandatory for higher tier tournaments.

It would be such an easy fix to an important problem

...as well as a method to continue to retool things as needed.

Given that such a thing is emphatically not a banlist, in practice it is going to trickle down to the casual scene as well. It also is not going to be a blanket solution, as some mechanics will need to be adjusted (Reinforce tokens probably need to interact with a wider variety of mechanics, and Sabine is so powerful her point cost would be impractical if left unerrata'd). Still, it could be a step forward.

I honestly think it's time for a 2nd edition. Every other game has multiple editions, let's get this done before the game dies.

I'd like to see this. There are so many issues that could be fixed easily by changing costs.

A simply ship's cost calculation method :

basic-stats-face-de-la-carte-53d25b5.png

Firing Arc :
- 180° = +1 pt and +5 pts by additional attack
- 360° = +2 pts and +6 pts by additional attack

Maneuvrability :
- excellent (A-Wing, Shadowcaster...) = +1 pt
- standard (X-Wing, TIE Fighter...) = 0 pt
- bad with an extended firing arc, even optional (Y-Wing) = -1 pt
- very bad with a standard firing arc (B-Wing) = -2 pts
- bad with an extended firing arc, even optional (Hawk) = -2 pts
- very bad with a standard firing arc (Lambda Shuttle) = -3 pts
- no K-turn with an extended firing arc = -1 pt
- no K-turn with a standard firing arc = -2 pt
- white K-turn = +2 pts

Example : Rookie pilot
+1 PS = 1 pt
+1 Attack = 4 pts
+2 Agility = 4 pts
+1 Hull = 2 pts
+2 Shield = 5 pts
+1 Action = 1 pt
Total cost : 17 pts for basic T-65. Integrated Astromech would not cost 0 point in this cost system, but 1.

Others T-65 pilots now :

PILOT (ability's cost) > revised cost (official cost)
Rookie pilot PS2 (-) > 17 (21)
Red squadron pilot PS4 (-) > 19 (23)
Tarn Mison PS3 (1) > 19 (23)
Hobbie Klivian PS5 (1) > 21 (25)
Biggs pre-nerf PS5 (4) > 24 (25)
Garven Dreis PS6 (1) > 22 (26)
Porkins PS7 (0) > 22 (26)
Wes PS8 (2) > 25 (29)
Luke PS8 (2) > 25 (28)
Wedge PS9 (3) > 27 (29)

Not same cost for Hobbie and Biggs, logical even if they have the same PS.

Other example with A-Wing Prototype Pilot
+3 Agility = 6 pts
+2 Shield = 5 pts
+3 Actions = 3 pts
Excellent maneuvrability = 1 pt
Total cost : 15 pts, without Chaardan Refit !

PILOT (ability's cost) > revised cost (official cost)
Prototype pilot PS1 (-) > 15 (17)
Green squadron pilot PS3 (-) > 17 (19)
Gemmer Sojan PS5 (1) > 20 (22)
Arvel Crynyd PS6 (1) > 21 (23)
Jake PS7 (3) > 24 (24)
Tycho PS8 (3) > 25 (26)

Some big ships :

Outer Rim Smuggler PS1
360° 2 Attacks = 2 pts
+1 Agility = 2 pts
+4 Hull = 8 pts
+4 Shield = 10 pts
+1 Action = 1 pt
Standard maneuvrability
Total cost : 23 pts.

Resistance Sympathizer PS3
+2 PS = 2 pts
360° 3 Attacks = 2+6 pts
+1 Agility = 2 pts
+6 Hull = 12 pts
+5 Shield = 12.5 pts
+1 Action = 1 pt
Standard maneuvrability
Total cost : 37.5 pts

Bounty Hunter PS3
+2 PS = 2 pts
180° 3 Attacks = 1+5 pts
+2 Agility = 4 pts
+4 Hull = 8 pts
+4 Shield = 10 pts
+2 Action = 2 pts
Standard maneuvrability
Total cost : 32 pts.

Omicron Pilot PS2
+1 PS = 1pt
+1 Attack = 4 pts
+1 Agility = 2 pts
+3 Hull = 6 pts
+5 Shield = 12.5 pts
+1 Action = 1 pt
Very bad maneuvrability with standard firing arc = -3 pts
No K-turn = -2 pt
Total cost : 21.5 pts.

Patrol leader PS3
+2 PS = 2pt
360° 3 Attacks = 2+6 pts
+10 Hull = 20 pts
+4 Shield = 10 pts
+1 Action = 1 pt
No K-turn with an extended firing arc = -1 pt
Total cost : 40 pts.

Lothal Rebel PS3
+2 PS = 2pt
+2 = 8 pts
+8 = 16 pts
+6 Shield = 15 pts
+2 Actions = 2 pt
Total cost : 43 pts.

B-Wing/Scurrg comparaison :
PILOT (ability's cost) > revised cost (official cost)
Blue squadron pilot PS2 (-) > 21 (21)
Karthakk pirate PS1 (-) > 27 (24)
Nym PS8 (2) > 36 (30)

Similar to a post I tried to make to break it down to the most basic of ship designs.

New Forum thread embedding is not working.

....and while looking over another nerf thread and seeing the last FAQ, I was reminded that it is tricky to keep track of rule changes but changing the points on a card adds nothing extra for me to keep track of. If my Aurora app is up to date, then I am all good.
