Tomax Bren - Ideas

By Smudger13, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Back when Imp Vets was released, the pilot that immediately drew my attention was Tomax Bren. Not in shuttle form as a support ship, but as a pure battering ram. Crack shot, missiles to flavour, and you have yourself a lethal but fragile ship.

A quick glance at meta wing shows that success has come for Bren generally when paired with targeting synchroniser Quickdraw plus one. My first and only tournament win came with this pair and Omega Leader.

This gives him the action economy to make sure he hits hard, navigates around countermeasures and black one if QD has FCS, and provides other high priority targets to take the heat off.

Outside of this archetype my experiments have generally failed.

I’d love to hear how you guys fly your Bren. I’m particularly interested to hear about the humble bomber making waves in competitive play. Is he lost without his buddy Quickdraw??

I won an OT tournament with this last year. I suspect Harpoons might make it a bit more scary, but it’s all good fun.

Very nice. In all honesty, I worry that bombers simply can’t survive in the current meta. The solution seems to be a Draw Their Fire Quickdraw type list. I suppose I’m hoping that there are other variants I haven’t considered.

I’m planning to fly this list at a store-kit tournament tomorrow. Tomax will lay down an ‘infinite’barrage with Crackshot & Unguided Rockets. Rhymer hopes to bring an element of stress control with Snap Shot & Tactician. Finally, Deathrain hopes to break-up enemy formations with infinite bombs.

There is a lot going on there! Let us know how you do? And good luck!

Tomax is absolutely and undeniably strong with Crack Shot, Unguided Rockets, and LWF. Unless, for some reason, you want him as a Shuttle (and I don't know why you'd choose him as your shuttle), that's the loadout for him. He can be paired well with many things, but, for Jank and fun, Deathrain with Unguided Rockets, Bomblets, LWF, and TS would be an absolute hoot - then maybe OL or a Striker?

Of course, you could also choose a couple "meta" ships, like QD and Vader. But honestly, I think the meta these days could be matched by lots of things, so go with what you want.
