Looking for Advice On An Unique Tournament Coming Up

By Astech, in X-Wing

I'm going to be going to a different kind of tournament on the 27th. Every player brings a 45 point list, and we play 30 minute rounds. THe overall winner is determined by K/D ratio, although I suspect this will change to "plus one for victories, minus one for losses" scoring. The only squad building rule is no condition cards, but Lone Wolf is legal.

Here are my ideas so far:

Poe Dameron (44)
R2-D2
Lone Wolf
Optics
Black One
Autothrusters

Poe has the PS to beat - or equal all other PTL aces. He's tanky enough to laugh at bombs - especially with R2, and he's maneuverable enough to dodge a few ships. I just don't see him going down to 45 points in 30 minutes.

Omega Leader (26)
Juke
Comm Relay

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (19)
Vader
TIE Shuttle

You've got an auto-win against anything that doesn't regenerate shields, and Vader to mess with anything else.

Captain Nym (44)
TLT
R5-P8
Bomblet Generator
Trajectory Simulator
VI
Havoc

You get a toolkit of a ship. Nym can do massive damage with TLT and bomblets, and failing that R5-P8 can damage any aces nearby.

Which of the three do you think is best?

I have a question about the rules of your tournament. If you kill your own ship, does your opponent get credit? In a standard game, they would get points for it, but obviously you’re not playing standard. This is relevant to your 2nd and 3rd lists, because they both have cards that could result in suicide.

My vote would be Nym. I love to fly him, and the way you have him kitted out, he is set for most lists you would face. TS & BG seems like a nasty combo, and the TLT is great for board control and low agility ships for consistent damage.

Poe is nice, but I'd be worried about Poe running up against a 2 ship list that would focus fire him in a couple of rounds. Poe isn't easy to hit, but missiles, QD, etc... would be nasty. Nym will be able to take some damage before dying.

My two cents anyway.

The opponent would get the credit, yes. Destroyed is destroyed, no matter what game effect causes it.

My big concern is doing enough damage in time - Nym isn't the fastest of ships, and he only has 10 health behind 1 agility. I mark that as about 5 shots before he's dead. Ordinarily, Nym can beat an opponent into the ground before then, but ships like Quickdraw, Dengar and Miranda can beat that damage race without trying.

Lone wolf Poe can laugh off two 3-die attacks a turn without any problems, and can tank two harpoons then run off to regenerate. Obviously it's a problem, but I feel he can handle everything except VI Kylo, who isn't allowed due to his condition card.

Honestly, you need to ask yourself whether you want to game the format or not. Both Poe and Miranda are more or less unbeatable one on one/in low points formats, because you simply can't bring enough dice to bear on them to kill them in the time.

And the format needs to know how it handles draws. Because they will happen.

Also, it needs to ban Lone Wolf.

Our meta is pretty evenly divided between thematic and hyper-competitive gamers. I like to be both, but I'll choose competitive over getting whipped with no chance of victory. I think Miranda is beatable with a bit of fast play, but Poe's pretty much untouchable, barring some lucky dice with Nym.

I'm sure wrinkles will be ironed out over the coming week, and I too hope lone wolf is banned, but if it isn't I'll be taking advantage of it.

Miranda doesn't like bombs, and she doesn't especially lie trajectory simulator bombs and Sabine. She also doesn't like anything that gives 4+ dice, I'm looking at you harpoon carriers. Having said that though, I wouldn't say Poe is untouchable. Pain in the *** yes but not untouchable with the right list.

The good news is that Rebels can't field both Sabine and the Nym necessary for a TS+Genius combo in 45 points, but she's certainly beatable with a PS 9+ heavy-hitter, or a stronger turret than a TLT.

Poe's more difficult - any target locks simply don't exist, and he can reliably get 1.5 evade results, plus shrug off one hit with R2-D2. You're right though; Kestal with an Ion turret would murderise him, since he can't regen off the ion move.

Good point with Poe. Forgot about R2D2 regenning a shield. He's a pesky little bugger.

The tournament is tomorrow, and I'm torn between the following:

Poe (PS 9) (44)
R2-D2
Lone Wolf
Advanced Optics
Autothrusters
Black One

Obvious benefits, regen on a super-reliable frame, agility, PS9.

Lieutenant Kestal (33)
Ion Cannon Turret
Expertise
Lightweight Frame

Academy Pilot (12)

It's occurred to me that the Ion shots will deny pretty much every build sans Miranda. R2-D2 can't regen off the white move, Nym can't drop his bombs and so on. The academy blocks in front of the ionised ship every round to deny actions.
