Before I get into results, I have the list of people and i'm missing a few lists (my friend Nick, @ForceSensitive above in 10). I ALSO have an extra list from someone that I'll post at the bottom, he may have been the kid who dropped? There were 38 there, rankings list 37, so.... i'll put his there.

If/when anything gets curious, let me know about whatever you're curious and will come back and edit this. For further ease of use, objectives will be in RYB order. (potentially, before posting this, if hyp assault that i shortened to hyp a$$ gets neutered, well, thats what it is)

@geek19, any chance you could bold the names so it's easier to visually parse?

Also Hyperspace Assault has the first three letters of the second word censored because it's a somewhat-crude term for "butt."

Oh, and thanks (of course). I know that's a lot of work right there.

Advanced Gunnery, Fleet Ambush, Solar Corona

Was well more than pleased with the performance of this list for being finalized at 2am day of. With only three games of practice with the basic setup. I've been playing with the Defiance basically since the wave 6 drop, so it was familiar territory. Spent a month preparing for this tourney with a friend (he did alright too, we both went 3-1) We had, apparently accurately, anticipated that this event would be a final drift away from the squadron meta, and as the both of us are normally acehole players (sorry) we prepped as such. I know I could have done a little better, but cest la vie. I played the whole event on three hours of sleep, another three hours of driving, and gratuitous amounts of coffee graciously provided by the hosting store, (which is an awesome store with awesome folks, please support their buisness lots and lots!)and this was the first Armada tournament I actually played in, instead of just hosted, so there was a ton of 'getting the feel' to catch up on. All my opponents were cool, only had one bad game and it was entirely my stupid, tired butts fault. Only weirdness to the meta I saw? Folks kept playing Advanced Gunnery into Dreadnought MC80 builds all day. Like it was absolutely insanity. We joked last day of practice while discussing objectives that we had to take it, but laughed it off as after months of experience with it surely no one would ever take it and let us 'live the dream' that objective is. Round one guy actually changed his mind from my OK objective, Corona, to gunnery. I rightly 10-1 got the game after scuttling his Avenger. A later round, against a Sloan fleet I was given first, and he had gunnery in his pool, I didn't even read the others. Tabled that player turn four. Only to hear that all the other Defiance builds were also getting to play Gunnery games... I'm speechless. Absolutely insanity. Weirdest result I could have imagined.

I played against this list in round 4 with a Madine Liberty list. it's a strong list, and it was well flown. I took first player and Solar Corona as the safest objective choice. Fleet ambush is often maligned as an objective, but I didn't have a squadron alpha and I would have needed 7 activations to last/first. With only 5, I'd have to weather Ackbar broadsides from both the MC-80 and MC-30 before I got to respond, and my likely escape vector would have just put me into the other arc of Defiance. In retrospect, taking Fleet Ambush and deploying very conservatively might have been a better choice, because the fully disadvantaged deployment made it impossible to get my ships into the fight without running head long into 3 Ackbar broadsides (I tried that in game one and nearly got tabled by @Church14). In the end, after 6 rounds of tense maneuvering, the only casualty was the flotilla that I used to block the approach of an MC-30, but it was a really fun game.

I have to echo what everyone else has said about the event itself. I had great opponents for all four matches. The staff and TO were great; it was well organized, and they provided food. What more can you ask for?

Typo

@geek19, thanks for collecting and typing this up. I appreciate it.

@ArdaedhelSwap out the enhanced armaments for literally anything else. They were cute, they were good on one out of four games, they sorta did what they were supposed to in terms of changing how people navigate around them, but are other wise completely useless. Like, H9s would have been better even. Then dive both 30s into attack range on the same turn in one target. I completely halved a MC80 in one shot. It worked really well. Space shotguns FTW.

@BackgildBRO! Thanks for the compliment! I woke up the next day to realize if we had played that last turn, there was a firing solution that MAYBE I could have KOed your liberty for a much bigger win. But that clutch last second blinded gunners when that lone upgraded flotilla was dead in your sights, which would have flipped that game by TWO points, OMG the insanity. Very satisfied with the game and the result. Nice to see you in the forums.

I'm a bit of a noob so could someone please explain to me how the above list works? It looks like a weird combination. Ackbar and Yavaris? FCT on the Defiance? Maybe I'm too inexperienced to appreciate its genius?

Edited by Plessiez

@ForceSensitive You're right, we got caught up in the craziness of that blinded gunners draw. I think that with Madine I could have turned hard enough to deny the side arc (hidden my side arc, not avoided yours), but I would have to have avoided your flotillas, and I don't remember the board state well enough to be certain. If I could have pulled it off, it would have taken spectacular roll, especially into the corona, to kill it. If I couldn't hide my side, I think it would have still taken three accuracies and 7 damage to kill it, again into the corona. Still a difficult roll, but not impossible for Defiance. If I could have stayed at red range, the rolls required become even more improbable.

I think it's likely the liberty lived, but I really wish we'd played it out so we knew for sure.

Edit:

After giving it a little more thought, your maneuver might have carried you forward far enough that I could have either slowed down or used the flotilla as a break to stay out of range completely. Ramming the flotilla (maybe twice) was certainly part of the plan until blinded gunners showed up. Again, we should have moved the ships. If I'm going to lose, I want to lose by the right amount.

Edited by Backgild
Added clarification about whose side arc I was talking about, and red range caveat.

@Backgild way I saw it was this. I had to finish the maneuver step from my lucky shot, I had a nav token, so drop speed, speed one tick right one, and sit. Next came your turn one at top of 6. You have to choose your 30 or 80. If 80 goes, I think you get stuck at speed three, on a double ram, and sit in the debris for four damage, which bizarrely you don't care and assign to all front Shields. Then I activate and fire in to your side, because at essentially speed one for you and my only mild bank I'll still have a shot, I have to roll 8 damage and 1 accuracy with xi7. I have likely mid-range but we'd had to check. So I lose one of my initial 4 red, 2 blue by all likelihood on the initial Corona trigger. So on 6 red, 2 blue, Defiance, and a added from concentrate which I'd had, losing one, a token reroll, and a leading shot, 9 total dice by the end, need all symbols and one as a accuracy specifically. Doable, but risky. BUT, if I fail... Then your 30 Rams the flotilla and the game flips to your victory by 2 mov. You have a sure way to win, I had to gamble on dice.

@Church14 can explain more since it's his list, but he is clearly a pro player because he recognizes the value of more than one FCT. (I had 3. ;)) Seriously though, it was an interesting variation on the more typical Defiance-centered fleets running around at the tournament. The squads are primarily there as anti-squadron, and he came out ahead on that in our game because as 1st player he could have his Yavaris-powered Ten Numb double-tap before I could have my Ten-Numb double tap. Neither one of us was keen on a direct engagement of our squadrons though, and Defiance thankfully is just as slow as two Peltas.

I’m going to write something up later for the full story with where the fleet came from and where it will go, but the brief explanation is:

1) I don’t like running empty flotillas or padding activations. Everything in my fleet has to be doing more than filling activations. If possible everything does two tasks. A very Rebel Fleet (and ISD) mindset. Imps tend to specialize.

-Transport/Toryn/BCC: Buff squads, buff flak, occasionally command squads as well

-Transport/Leia/Comms: token generation, Slicer Tools resistance, dumb command choice resistance. I can change a top dial and punt a matching token to my Home one and swap from a Navigate to a Squadron (token and dial) or Engineering (token+dial).

-Yavaris: Nothing creative. Standard Yavaris

-Defiance: Command Cruiser for points and for higher squadron value. Leading Shots, ECM, and X17 for ship combat. FCT was there to keep Ten Nunb in needed position and correct mistakes in squad positions. Lando was the AvengerBT/Demolisher one off defense.

-Commander: I considered Ackbar, Sato, Rieekan, Cracken, and Dodonna. Rieekan makes Defiance, Yavaris and a sort of Ace Ball even more reliable, but didn’t up performance directly. Sato was a neat idea, but until Wave 7 drops and would have given me HIE, I’m not bothering. Dodonna for points and bomber crits hitting home. Cracken to Preserve Yavaris and the flotillas. I settle on Ackbar because I fly the Home One all the time and have good instincts for getting both side arcs on targets.

TL;DR: I hate running AFmk2B, so I dropped some squads, the AFmk2B, and a flotilla to gain Defiance and a better Commander compared to the normal Yavaris/GH 2+3. I took Ackbar because as 1st place showed, Defiance with Ackbar is enough ship to ship firepower.

EDIT: It isn’t fair to say they were primarily an anti-squad screen. 3 Red Bombers, a Black bomber, a Blue-Black bomber, and a black non-bomber adds up against ships if BCC is around. Against comatose(?), They went full anti-squad as he brought a screen that could level my Defiance if I didn’t take them out. They did a lot of bombing after killing the 3 Sharas, 2 Tychos, 2x2400s, 2 Z95s, and one Awing from the other three matches

Edited by Church14

Ill add that I really liked seeing @Church14 ‘s list. It’s got a good mix of direct combat and squads and looks like it would be a lot of fun to play.

In all seriousness, it was a fun and well run tournament. Thanks to @CaribbeanNinja and Justin J for the games and advice at the MS regional

I actually got outbid by one point in two of the games, was given second both times. So apparently, I didn't have enough bid.

Would you be so kind as to post the list?

Nvm, I see it.
