800 points and...

By Hidatom, in Star Wars: Legion

is there an official format for smaller points? I know there is the "base game" format where you just play with "what ya got" but I was wondering if there is an official 400 point / 3' by 3' table format...or if we could create one.

maybe 2-4 troops and 0-2 of the other types?

I think this is a question that will best be answered by the official rulebook.

We'll know soon!

I do wonder how well a T-47 will work on a 3x3 for a smaller format game.

You probably wouldn't be able to with the 400 point limit. I think you have to have at least 2 troops and a commander which is probably 300 or so right there. The air speeder is 175 points or so according to Battlescribe.

Edit: apparently the requirement is 1 commander and 3 troopers. Basically the core set with a handful of upgrades on each unit comes out to right at 400 points.

that was why I was thinking 2-4 troops + commander + 0-2 for the rest might be "balanced"

The Learn to Play book may have a scaled down easy-to-learn first mission type format that you could use to get an idea from.

Not too sure.

When you try you may have to play with say 500 points as the commanders may not scale down all that well, and if at 400 points you get a commander and 2 squads you won't get a fun game at all.

I feel like actually trying to play objective based missions on a 3x3 board will make Commanders too important. Commanders have a couple of important radius effects (primarily the ability to issue orders and the ability to let friendly troopers use the Commander's Courage value) and the smaller overall board means those effects represent a disproportionately large percentage of the total play space. Plus, it means slow units like Darth Vader and Snowtroopers will always be able to get right into the thick of things, which will totally cancel out their biggest weakness without costing more.

Put differently, on a 3x3 board Darth Vader is going to be way too powerful because the opponent doesn't really have anywhere to run and his Courage value of "-" means he can drag around a big bubble of Stormtroopers or Snowtroopers that will never break on morale.

The smaller format might work okay for demos (which have generally been done without Suppression rules) because it forces everyone into battle right away, but it seems likely to fall apart when considering objectives and Courage.

I agree with Dr Lucky. There’s a lot more changes to a game than it initially looks like when you change board size.

- Fast and/or Lon g ranged troops get less valuable, but cost the same

-Slow and/or short ranged troops get much better, but cost the same

-Aura effects cover much more of the game space

-Reduced numbers of troops make durable units vastly harder to kill, as there’s less concentration of fire and probably less stuff able to counter them

-For Legion specifically, compulsory moves could be very restricting

Its going to be odd, and I predict extreme Imperial dominance with Vader’s morale bubble (and honestly just Vader mirdering things in general), flametroopers and the occasional undying AT-ST.

But go for it if it appeals, I expect none of the issues are insurmountable!
