With the new distribution methods and such, I was curious and intrigued by the amount of starter sets on the market now. For home/casual fun play is it possible to just pick up starter sets and have fun? (Playing with friends/wife/kids)

If so, what quantity of each starter set would be advisable? It would appear at least 2 of the two player starters is advisable? Beyond that, do I need the older Rey/Ren starters? Should I buy two copies of Luke/Boba too?

Assuming you want to play at home using the proper rules, you need two copies of every starter you intend to buy. Each starter contains a 20 card deck, and the two-player game contains two 20-card decks. For full decks, you need two copies of each starter, so that you can cull your 40 cards into a playable 30-card deck.

Further, each of the hero starters has one elite character and one non-elite character, and each villain starter has the same except the second character is generic. The two-player game has four non-elite characters. To get all your characters elite (two dice), you need two copies.

Unfortunately a Destiny starter is not as good a value as, say, Magic Planeswalker precons. It’s designed so that you’ll buy a starter and a few boosters to get your 30-cards. If you do elect to buy two copies of every starter, I’ve found them to be fairly well balanced against each other, but only when you’ve combined the two copies of your starter into a single well thought-out deck. Single starter 20-card decks tend to favour the heroes, while the two-player 20-card Villain deck is very strong.

You don’t need the older starters, but it’s always fun to have the variety. There’s a set out now/soon (region dependent) called ‘Rivals’ which is also worth picking up for its characters and upgrades. I haven’t experimented, but I have a feeling you might be able to use the cards in Rivals to help pad out a starter and keep it interesting. If you buy your starters from an established gaming store, you could also ask them if they have a ‘chaff’ box you could pick from... I know at my LGS there are about 500 commons from all three sets in an old box, and whenever a new player comes in we drown them in these old, unwanted cards. Look for a few clutch commons like ‘Doubt’, ‘He Doesn’t Like You...’ and ‘Manipulate’ for villains, ‘Destiny’, ‘Lightsaber Pull’ and ‘Field Medic’ for hero. And anything Neutral that takes your fancy. Use these to pad out your starter decks for free.

I am going to second this. I found that just playing the two player game as is straight out of the box was both fun and balanced, perfect for just playing at home with the family.

Id argue against this. A single 2player starter just feels too thin.

2 2player starters, 1 rey starter and 1 kylo starter was the entry for me and my wife, and I still think that was a good choice. Now we buy roughly 4 boosters a month and modify our decks ever so slightly. When boba and luke arrive we will buy 1 each, and then well have 4 functioning decks.

It probably "feels thin" to you being used to having a full 30 cards / points in a game. But when used as a quick, no thought to start since the decks are already built, game for fun at home, it is great. And if those "for fun at home" games are all you are interested in then it is fine. If you want to mix things up, then sure buy some boosters, or another starter or two and build up the decks or not and keep it at 20 cards for a faster game. My house still enjoys the 2 player game by itself due to how quickly we can get a game in.

By buying (2) 2 player starter sets, you have 2 very fun decks to start with.

I want to play casually at home also. Thinking of just getting one Two-Player Game , one Luke Skywalker Starter Set and one Boba Fett Starter Set.

Would that give us enough to enjoy the game for some time?

I would say yes. As a simple version of the game it can give you lots of options. you can also use D6's for your second character dice so that you can play 2 dice Kylo, Phasma, Han, Rey, Luke, Boba and Poe should you desire if you are just going to be playing at home. I do this all the time with new players for characters i do not own 2 of because when I am not at a tourney I am not worrying about having that second die.

I think the legacies starters are pretty good in terms of value and variety, only problem being that poor Boba gets stuck with some chucklenut that can't become an elite

if you can somehow convinced yourself to buy the 2 player games and the legacies starters, you'll have a ball because you'll be able to pair Boba with Phasma

though you then could get two 2pgs and one of the legacies starters. You won't get two copies of every card, but you will get Boba and Luke with two dice

This game has a really great pool of fixed content products. For about $100, roughly the price of a premium FFG board game, you can get a pretty deep customizable dice game from starter products alone.

For casual home play I would say this is fine. Even if you bought 1 of each starter available so far you would still get a decent amount of variety and some of those are available at a cut price. You can probably pick up a lot of commons for next to nothing on ebay to give even more variety.

My original plan was casual as well, 2 two player games, 4 starters, 4 rivals 3 boxes and many packs later....
