Looking for an even matchup for teaching newbie

By s1ickrick, in X-Wing

Been helping a newbie and this weekend we are going to finally play the full game with 100 point squads and all rules. We played the tutorial and a couple modified matches first time we played. Found these beginning squads online. Would this make a pretty even match? Looking for stuff not overly complicated, but want to start opening up some of the possibilities to him.

Chewy (100)

•Chewbacca (52) - YT-1300
Draw Their Fire (1), Gunner (5), Engine Upgrade (4)

Blue Squadron Novice (24) - T-70 X-Wing

Blue Squadron Novice (24) - T-70 X-Wing

——————- vs ——————

Decimator (100)

•Commander Kenkirk (51) - VT-49 Decimator
•Ysanne Isard (4), Fleet Officer (3)

•"Epsilon Leader" (19) - TIE/FO Fighter

Epsilon Squadron Pilot (15) - TIE/FO Fighter

Epsilon Squadron Pilot (15) - TIE/FO Fighter

Considered putting Howlrunner in for Epsilon Leader. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If you want completely "even" just go for a true mirror match. Of course this isn't really even as initiative would change things but otherwise you are looking for two different, but somehow matched, squadrons.

Although it may not seem to be very even back in the early days a suggestion was to use a 50 point Chewbacca as the simple ship against a trio of Imperial Fighters. Two very different ways of playing but arguably very possible to match up as well as being thematic.

I like your lists. Thematic and fun.

Do you think Howlrunner or Epsilon Leader would be best?

I like Epsilon Leader because it’s thematic and he same as the other /FOs. Also formation flying is hard for beginners.

And here there are some who have said that learning formation flying is an essential part of the game. Having Howlrunner in encourages that and also shows how teamwork can work within a squadron.

Jousters, turrets, bombers, arc dodgers

long ago, the four archetypes lived together in harmony

then everything changed when the bombers attacked

Food for thought,

Why not make it cool like Ep4?

So take Luke (R2D2, crack shot , torps) / Wedge (R2, Pred, Toros) / Biggs (selflessness, R2, Torps) vs Vader with a bunch of ties. (maybe one Interceptor /striker and one Bomber / Alpha Wing)

Fight over a spot on the table which you could say is the port that a X-Wing has to hit. For spiciness make the Rebel Player have 45 points less and drop a Han pilot with Chewie and C3P0 on a random turn.
