What to buy

By soldaan, in Star Wars: Legion

Hey guys and girls,
I was wondering if it is a good idea to buy everything from wave 1 or is there a better way to spend my money?

On the other hand do I need an extra dice set and extra rulers?

Cheers

that depends on if you are planning on playing both factions, or supplying both or not. All of the wave 1 units for your faction of choice would be a good idea. Extra dice would be helpful as attack pools can quickly exceed the amount of dice in the core.

You’re probably gonna need 2 extra dice packs. So far you can roll up to 12 dice at once.

A core is 3-infantry, 1-support, dice and all the cardboard.

I'm supplying both sides so I'll buy 2 infantry, 1 support, and 1 heavy. That should get me to 800 points with a little variation on army composition.

As with Armada you had very little fleet variation until a couple waves in. So I'll accept that with legion and grow with the game.

The next wave I'll get 2 infantry and the commander and see how that goes.

I was thinking of supplying both sides and the idea about buying everything from wave 1 is there's at least a little bit of variation for both sides. I don't have a point value in my head for playing, but I'm curious if it's a good idea to buy an extra box of infantry since there's already a good share of them in the core box.

Aah what the heck I should probably order everything :D

I dont think anyone knows what you NEED to buy just yet..some people prefer to buy 2 cores, some dont.

I personally have ordered 1 of everything (except Veers and Snowtroopers) so far as I want it...and I want it now!!!

for corps you need 3 and the core only comes with 2, so for a standard game you will need at least one of those.

One of the benefits of marrying a geek, she's almost as interested as I am!

split 2 starter boxes with a friend (one takes Imps, one Rebs) and you will have nearly enough for a full game.

"Almost" now there's an important word lol

I plan on mostly playing at home with my son, so I'll be doing both factions. My goal is to get two starters and then one of each unit not in the starters. However, I've learned from past experiences with miniature games and will start with getting one starter. Once that is built and painted, I will then get another unit/starter. I've had too much unpainted in the past and don't want to do that again.

Two things that some might want to weigh in. Some may not care. But we still are not 100% on whether expansion packs have unique cards not in the core set. If so, the expansions may be a better option than 2 core sets.

Also, pictures have shown us there's a real possibility that the AT-RT and Speeder Bike expansions will have different mini poses compared to the core set.

We really dont know until its all released. But if either is true, im skipping a double core box purchase and opting for the expansions.

From what I can tell based on points with cards revealed so far; you can build a 800 point Imperial force with 1x Core, 1x Stormtrooper expansion, and 1x AT-ST expansion. That's with several upgrades added. Is it the most optimal? Probably not, but I don't think you really "need" 2x Cores. Although based on demo'ing the game at PAX South, having a second set of dice is nice.

If you spend over $60 on stuff in the core box you may as well get another core. Dice + ruler + 2x troops = $80 MSRP. I suppose it depends on the card situation, though. If they put non-core cards in core packs that kind of sucks.

To start I'll get a core and paint it, then I'll get all of wave 1 to hopefully get 800 pts.

Just don’t tell her, and claim it’s a gift from a friend.

”honey, what are all these Star Wars minis?”

”Gifts from Frank”

”All 15 of them?”

grappling hooks and impact grenades are not in the core. They are however in every corps unit expansion spoiled.

Concussion grenades and targeting scopes are only in the core.

This was my assumption. Same with the varient minis. But some will disagree or be skeptical until the product hits shelves. Totally on board with you.

In previous titles, i ended up buying three cores of x-wing, two cores of armada, two cores of runewars and one core of imperial assault.

Every time i bought multiple cores at the beginning, i ended up with a lot of minis i never played beyond wave 1, so this time i got myself one core and every expansion wave 0-1 for the extra cards which are not included in the core and see where this game will take me.

On the other hand, having more dice is a must, having extra rulers and tokens is nice, and if you plan to split with someone, buying a second core might come in handy. its truly situational.

Since i won't be playing Imperials much initially (not really through choice, just every bugger locally is playing them so i will use Rebels) i'll just be going for a core and then some Rebel expansions and extra dice.

So far i don't think there's anything in the Imperial expansions i need for my Rebels...hopefully the Speeders won't mess that up. Not the end of the world though since i will be using both factions eventually.

The infantry models look like repackaged core set ones. While you need 3 squads for a full game I'm going to hold off to see what comes next hoping theres some variety.

If theres no new troops it only costs me the small preordr discount to buy them so happy to take it slow.

Well, for the Empire the Snowtroopers could eventually be purchased as the third squad. If Rebels also get an infantry release, that would give you variety.
