Combos of the new wave: Wide Area Barrage and... Cluster Bombs

By Parkdaddy, in Star Wars: Armada

Think about it.

Are you sure your squad wants to attack that MC30/75? Cause you’re probably gonna die if you do.

Just calling out the possibility of an old, maligned upgrade gaining a great (probably not competitive) upgrade to pair with in this new wave. It still sucks for 1-time use and 5 points, but it’s out there

What other combos have people seen? Any other terrible upgrades of the past looking better now?

Why are cluster bombs good with WAB?

Wide Area Barrage can put unpreventable damage on squads without wasting an attack on squads (average 3 with an MC30 double arc and ordnance experts).

Cluster bombs can put unpreventable damage on squads (3 average) without wasting an attack on squads.

That kills everything up through a defender, on average, without wasting a single attack on them.

Cluster Bombs hasn't worked because it only triggers in response to One squadron. SUre, it'll probably mess up that squadron, but it just makes your enemy not use a vulnerable squadron to attack one of your ships... or save it until your ship is nearly dead.

It's a deterrent more than anything. Nobody wants to be the first one to take a swing at that ship. Either the Imp Ace that may get entirely wiped out by a 5-point upgrade, or Maarek/Luke/etc who may come out with only 1hp remaining.

I looked at cluster bombs as an option when facing the Rieekan aceholes list I kept running into for nearly a year. Against the likes of Norra with a B-Wing trio and Yavaris... do you use cluster bombs against one of the attacking B-Wings or do you hold on to it hoping Norra attacks... but then she doesn't?

Then when you've used it against some non-ideal squadron, that's not the most effective use of points, you're out a defensive retrofit and you haven't even hurt the squadron you wanted. Against Rebels, it's not likely to kill anything other than an A-Wing or Z-95 squad without wearing it down first.

I dunno, yeah I like cluster bombs but it's too restrictive to really make me feel comfortable with it... at least on my ISDs. Advanced Projectors gets so much more mileage out of responding to bomber attacks than C-Bombs. Early Warning System is also a nice thing because now only two-dice bombers are going to get traction against a target arc, and this goes on for as long as the ship exists.

Thank you for understanding!

WAB requires a ship to be the defender to trigger tho. The WAB damage we are talking about in this example requires a lot of moving parts to go right for you.
