Props to FFG

I think it needs to be said...

Releasing the wave early to a great content creator like @Crabbok was a very smart move and exactly the kind of thing that many people wanted to see start happening back in early December.

This was a smart move and much appreciated.

Agreed

We're still angry they delayed the wave though, right?

Can't be angry without knowing the cause of the delay.

Game developer hit by a bus? Play-testing took longer than expected? Third party supply chain issues? Somebody forgot to hit "send" on an email for two months? X-Wing was prioritized to rush it out for Christmas? First print run was severely flawed and had to be reprinted? Statistically unlikely asteroid impact leveled a manufacturing plant?

Just trying to prompt a discussion. I understand, probably better than most, the difficulty of bringing a product to market but I don't want FFG to think they can placate us by spoiling cards that we could be fondling in person.

I'm sure we would all have loved to have these in our hands by the end of the 4th quarter last year like was initially advertised. I'm also pretty sure FFG would have like for them to be in our hand then also because you know $$$$. But for some reason (see @svelok post above), which we will never know, it didn't happen. I'm going to choose to be happy about this because from indications (articles over the last few weeks, and this) it seems like FFG is trying to be a little more proactive.

I’m not going to get on them for engaging the community. Never react negatively to behaviors you want to see more of.

Exactly this

Perhaps I need to be more clear, I'm not even against this method of spoiling the cards, but in the end it is still just a method of placating irritable consumers.

I'm also in the business of selling toys to adult men and we also get grilled when we can't deliver on time but we don't expect our consumers to care about why we failed - the simple matter is that we failed and we put significant resources to improving our processes so we can be more accurate.

We should expect more from the companies we give money to.

Alternatively, they could approach product releases differently. Especially for our new or highly anticipated products we'll actually have a complete product embargo for months until the product is actually in our dealers' hands then do a nation-wide media-blitz. Our consumers love it and the process changes the narrative: we as a company are no longer keeping our products from our consumers but are now bestowing "surprise" products instantly. It's obviously the same thing but in the end no one has to endure a delay and that makes a big difference.

I'm sorry but this is barely engaging with the community.

Engaging with the community would be sending a member of the design team to @Crabbok 's house to do the un-boxing with him. This individual could talk about what they are exciting about and some test builds they've been commanding and ideas about how players could utilize new mechanics.

What we were given is the bare minimum (because writing a release article would've required more effort) to keep us calm and happy until these ships are actually available.

Yes, the baser part of me is still happy to see the new cards and I'm excited to start theory crafting but that doesn't have to mean I can't criticize the larger issue here.

If you give a mouse a cookie...

I actually think it's a bad move. From a PR prospective and from a engaging the public perspective.

The articles they've been releasing recently have been WONDERFUL. They have helped revitalize the community and got things in the forums moving again. There was easily 2 or 3 more articles of content that was just spilled all at once. This will likely mean less articles as there is no reason to have articles revealing info already revealed.

I prefer the slow-drip official reports over a total leak like this.

I doubt they won’t still release the articles with the official images

They may, but the info is out there already. The articles won't generate new traffic or conversations.

Each article was revealing a little new info. We'd integrate those new pieces into the larger picture and conversations, debates, and arguments would commence. Next article would repeat the process and that new info would be integrated again. Now we have all the info, so any new articles won't actually spur on anything. This news will dry up and the new articles won't actually add anything.

I think the unboxing videos will actually get more attention and wider distribution than official FFG page articles

Yeah, basically FFG is rewarding a long-time Armada content creator. Which is a cool thing to do.

I only saw the link to the video on this forum. The last article I saw it here and at least 3 different facebook groups.

The Facebook group in the Twin Cities, which is where FFG is based, didn't even know about the spoilers until I posted the links to the forum there.

Partially this is because half of the players locally already know about the cards, partially because none of them use the forums.

Well yes, but with how much we got now, it’s enough as release is REALLY not that far away

Regardless of how FFG chooses to engage with the Armada community, they are engaging it and that's all I desire.

Thank you FFG, and PLEASE keep up this level of involvement with your community. We don't want to hang you from the gallows, we just want a pat on the head more often than 6 months between news articles.

Even if you have nothing to announce, please take the route the community has offered and you seem to be listening too. If FFG doesn't have time to talk about Armada, contact community members and have them do it. It takes coordination and effort when I know you guys are stretched thin right now, but the rewards are worth it.
