If a player using a card to search their deck for a card and take it into hand, such as with Lightsaber Pull, can they choose to not find a card, even if there is one in their deck?

If they are required to take one if there is one there, and they say they do not find one, is there a procedure to verify?

Officially, when you resolve an ability you do as much as you can.

In this instance, a lot of people, myself included, think that means if you have one in your deck you have to reveal it and shuffle you deck. If your opponent plays it and doesn't reveal one, you should call a judge to check.

Other people are arguing that to "search" doesn't mean you have to find one. You fulfill the search just by looking through your deck.

Realistically there are only a handful of scenarios where playing the card to find nothing is beneficial.

So unless they update the RRG, there's nothing that really handles this situation other than the spirit of "do as much as you can."

I guess I'm not seeing what benefit there would be to searching, and then deliberately "not finding" the card you're looking for, if it's there.

There are cards that let you see the top of a deck, so a reshuffle can be good. This isn't magic and using magic rules don't apply here. So in the other game you can search and find nothing, here you do what the card says. There is no 'May' on that card.

It is pointless to speculate, what we need is an official ruling. How do we go about getting that? From FFG? Or Lukas?

Lukas is a WotC employee now, so no, you don't ask him. The rules do state you do as much as you can, so you find a blue weapon if there is one, and put it into your hand. If there is no weapon to be found, that is find as well.

The real issue here is - is there or isn't there a weapon to be found? You kind of have to take their word for it which is why other games make finding something optional rather than give the opponent a quick look through of the entire deck. FFG doesn't seem to have issue with a players deck list being made available, so this isn't a hang up for them. BTW you won't ever get official rulings here. You'll have to submit the question through their customer service.

If you play the card then it isn't an option. The card would say (may) in the text if it was.

If it's a tournament I would call a judge over and make them watch the rest of the game or look at his deck and hand.

I emailed to get an official ruling.. I'll post here if they send me one!

Point out the rules and just allow your opponent to double check.

Then it becomes a judgement call, if you aren't sure and want to check ask the judge over.
