For the upcoming Regionals at FFG Center, I want to bring a new unit that doesn't see much play and make it shine: Maul, aka the Artist Formerly Known As Darth.

The problem I am running into is that while he has multiple possible synergies, they are generally in either Rebel or Imperial, and thus can't all be used together. I think it would be a fun idea to throw this out to the community to find the best possible list using the distressed Dathomiri.

I've got 3 basic ideas to start off with:
1. Imperial Sith Lords w/Vader and Palp
2. Merc Brawler with Shyla, ePigs, etc
3. Merc Force User w/ Luke and maybe Ahsoka brought in

You could also look at it, from a different angle. IG-88, BT-1 and Maul all have in common that they gain Focus for free on each attack. Picking those three frees you up from some of the other support units.

That's 28 points and 4 activations. So you have 12 points to flesh out to 6-7 acts. I'd take Greedo for sure. You could still consider C-3PO just to focus the last guy. That leaves you 6 points. I'd like to have Devious because I just love that card. I'm thinking the last could be 0-0-0 if you want another upgrade (could be Prey or Targeting for BT) or eProbe for more range.

What about something like this?:

Your command deck could include 2 parting blows and 2 pummels, with Shyla there to move your units around/clear the stuns. You could also replace Greedo, Jawa, and black market for rebel care package and have a couple of extra points to play around with.

Another direction to take it would be a sniper list. Something like maul, greedo, 2x eQuays, rebel support package. That's 31 points and 6 activations. Season to taste for the remaining 9 points. Let Maul & Greedo contest objectives. Sustained by Rage is basically a better version of Parting Shot. If you tap Maul to Take Initiative or Change of Plans, he can't be defeated until he activates *next* round. That very powerful for objective denial or wasting your opponents attacks on him.

Just keep Maul away from Han & Vader's end of round attacks!

I toyed around with a Luke and Maul All-Out Brawl list that was fun.

Luke, Maul, ePigs, Greedo, eJawa, 3PO, Gideon, Temp Alliance

I had both force user and brawler command cards. It was fun but obviously would struggle on something like Nal Hutta since there’s no ranged attacks really. Shyla is nice because of her whip ability, but I couldn’t fit her in.

I had one with Luke Maul 3po temp elite weequays greedo onar- or you can switch out Onar for jawa and r2 for more card draw and figs

I'm running maul in the season 4 vassal tourney and he's been rather disappointing to be honest- he's kind of like an "opposite chewie" in that you want to activate him late to trigger his ability - on objectives like stashes he is awesome but crate ones not so much. I find it's hard for him to make up his point cost unless I am getting one objective and one kill- it's hard to get more than that a lot of the time since he dies pretty fast (last night drokkata did a 9 dmg attack I think and the he was finished off next attack)

I love Palpatine + Maul. Add in Opportunistic (Command Card) + Stalk Prey (Maul's Ability) and this helps you get 2 Maul attacks per turn pretty easily. You can also tempt Maul to kill him, give him a power token, and his last attack hits even harder. Add in a couple of eJets or eJet / eSentry and season to taste.

Funny. I was just trying to fit him into my list last night. I found the biggest issue are his traits (force user/brawler). I toyed with the idea of putting him in, but not worrying about taking many if any force user or brawler cards. In that case, he'd be more of a secondary character, which would be fine except that he's 7 pts!

I could see how this might make him worthwhile as you could even do a similar thing with Jabba. You're idea is more thematic I must say. LOL

I usually pick one trait and focus on it. If I go with Maul + Palpatine, then I go with force powers. If I go with Maul + Shyla, I focus on Brawler cards.

For 7 points eWeequays are still really good. I believe that Maul will be better as it gets more play. Right now Han, Vader, and IG-88 are really good but I am seeing other units working well (eSentries, AT-DP, and Maul) so maybe there is a place in the meta for some of these other characters.

Maul plus Palop is what I've used and it's pretty good- I like lists where Maul is more like your #3 that way he lasts longer-term- and opportunistic is a good combo with Maul. Anyone tried him with Ahsoka?

I really enjoyed when I ran Vader, Palp, Maul, eClaw, 2x Officer, Zillo. I think that's my most likely route still, with a replacement for the Clawdite.

I'd think Onar could be fun. Somebody thinks they're going to kill him, and he Zillo's and Get down's for a block and evade

A few thoughts:

* I think Jabba is necessary for Maul or Shyla to get off at least 2 attacks in the 2nd round.

* I didn't want to put in the full Rebel Care Package b/c I thought it would take too much away from objectives. However the eWeequays need to be Focused in order to pump out enough damage against foes.

* Going Brawler/Hunter with Command Cards leaves no leeway for any other decent cards... but I think Maul will need as many Brawler cards that you can give him.

Obviously not too competitive, but you can make an interesting command deck with Force user, brawler and creature cards. Rancor tanks a lot of damage and you can “work” with Maul because he’s not the main threat of the list.

In the swamps is really difficult to play though. I have to give it a try in the new Jawa map.

I was crafting last night and came up with this for a maul list:

Stun for days...perhaps not on par with Vader's battling bastards....but, I love Greedo, Vinto and Onar (even Lando) together.

Looks cool. Not sure about Change of Plans here. You can't change Maul for anything. You can change between BT-1 and Onar which is definitely cool, but other than that, it seems like a quite limited card. You could change it for Force Surge (if you ditch Mauls card as well) and another 0 pointer.
