SWD Character Partner Dilemma

By Barby007, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hey everyone! Happy New Year!! Hope you all had a great start of the year. I'm having some major issues pairing characters in Destiny. I've been working all weekend on paoirings & nothing great is coming to mind. Something you should know is that I personally only like to play characters that I like &/or if the pairing makes sense in the cannon, etc. Yes, I'm a big geeky nerd this way. I do however realize that point costs don't always work out so I have changed my OCD-ness to at least play 1 character that I like & find a random working partner for them. I'm having some issues finding a pair for my favorite villains & heroes now that the new set is out & due to the major rules nerfing that happened prior. Can you guys give me some suggestions of a few partners for the following characters please?

Doctor Aphra

Darth Vader (Sith Lord) - other than Tuskan Raider ... ugh!

Rey (new or old version) - other than Han....already played it to death.... literally.....

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Thank you guys in advance,

Barby :)

For Obi-Wan, use Maz (assuming new Obi-Wan).

For Darth Vader, try Nute Gunray or Bib Fortuna.

For old Rey, I've enjoyed old Obi-wan.

I don't have Aphra, so I haven't really given her much thought yet, sorry.

You're way behind the times.

Nute Gunray, Magnaguard, Bib, Royal Guard... Vader has a plethora of partners of all colours to play with, all with pros and cons. (I like Nute Gunray - his ability makes him a target your opponent wants gone, and his status as a unique red character makes leadership a lovely addition to your deck).

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Which one?

New one (Legacies) goes well with eMaz, old one (Spirit of Rebellion) I played quite a bit with one die Rey (Awakenings), inconsistent but very bursty when you get that perfect action-cheaty "Force speed-Force Speed-Vibroknife-Roll in-Resolve Force Speeds- Roll in Obiwan-Re-roll until you get max damage-then resolve it" turn.

Vader/Nute is just silly powerful. You have to nuke nute PURELY so he doesnt Leadership Vader, and thats actually not the only thing hes doing either. He's generating resources and just by existing slowing down the opponent's game (one game my opponent refused to discard, he never got an ungrade out without rolling a lot of resources. Next game he decided he wanted his resources and discarded so many key cards it was hilarious)

Theres two obi-wan characters now, the trilogy version and prequel version. New one is the prequel and i've been laughing at how durable he is paired with a simple Jedi Temple Guard and 2x defensive teachings // 2x "Your Eyes Can Deceive You" - that was a 50min game before i lost, purely because my dice absolutely refused to roll damage but i was able to mitigate his damage so hard i actually decked out before he even hurt me (thanks to luke's protection i didnt lose right there though) (nothing more irritating than activating a character with 5 dice that all have 3melee sides and in 10+ turns he never got more than 3 combined damage...)

Aphra....working on it still. I like her, really want to use her, but god her price and ability limit her so much its not even funny. She NEEDS a red buddy imo, but i cant find one worth using.

For Aphra you could try pairing her with elite Quinlan Vos, the card draw will help beef him up.

But since you said you preferred thematic pairings you could also do Vader with elite Aphra and go for a sort of discard/damage hybrid with Interrogation Droids, BT-1, and Ark Angel

- Obi-Wan/Maz was definitely in my list to try out. Will definitely give it a go.

- I really don't like Bib. Definitely considering Nute even though I don't like him either.

- I don't own an old Obi-Wan. Also wanted to pair the old characters up with newer cards.

- Aphra seems to be the hardest to pair.

Thanks for the advice Willange! :)

- I did play Vader with Raider, Magnaguard, & Royal Guard. I didn't like the mono blue with Royal guard & I didn't like that Magnaguard was dead by turns 2-3. I'm definitely considering Nute but not a fan.

- Yes I was talking about the new Obi-Wan. Really like him. Maz seems to be the obvious choice. Was looking for other possible choices.

Thank you Stu35! :)

- Definitely considering Vader/Nute. Don't like Nute as a character but I can definitely see the power potential in the pair. Red is good for Vader.

- I'm looking for a partner for the new Obi-Wan. Not a fan of the first one. Will definetly try him out with Jedi Temple Guard.

- Aphra is my favorite villian but I can't seem to find a good pari for her. I also feel she lacks droid support. I'm hoping the next sets will support her & make her shine.

Thank you Vineheart01! :)

That's actually exactly what I'm currently playing but it's too much going on. No synergy. That was the first thing I did when I pulled her was build Vader/Aphra. lol It hits decently hard but not fast enough. They quickly go after Vader which kills the high damage. Aphra by herself can't hold up at the moment. I'm hoping future sets will make her shine.

Thak you SwagonBallZ! :)

List of droids for Aphra to use:

Astromech
BB-9E (or as my friends call him, BB-Hate)
BT-1
Droid Commandos
ID9 Seeker Droids (Yes, its an upgrade, but its still a Droid)
Interrogation Droid
Probe Droid

Thats it. Of those, Droid Commandos are the only one that even costs anything to begin with. Commandos are pretty good but they arent 4cost good - hence why i am trying to get Aphra a red buddy.

Yep! I completely agree about the red. I'm currently running her with the V Trooper & a Battle Droid. It works well but only when rolling well. lol

Thanks again Vineheart01!

eTarkin/eAphra is a legitimately competitive deck.

This is one I want to try, when I get a second Tarkin. What I have built right now is an eAphra/Nute/Ciena support deck. I haven’t tried it, but with the cheaper droids and Ciena’s ability, I think it might have some potential. Or it might just bomb. But I plan to have fun either way.

Sadly i have no Tarkins :(

My friend pulled 2 of him and he actually thinks hes trash and his ability is useless....i'd love to get my hands on tarkin to show him how wrong he is

I'm working on single new Obi-Wan/ePoe2. I think there's something there, but I haven't quite cracked it yet. As an aside, it's insane how tanky Obi-Wan can get. Gotta watch out for that first-round damage, though, as he takes a turn or two to build to it.

Obi-Wan is very tanky. Pair him with eRose and get a first turn Suppression Field out and you're good to go. Roll Rose's special to generate resources and remove damage from the suppression field.

- I agree. I'm sure red will be in the top decks of this meta.

Thanks RJM!

- I know the feeling. I ddin't pull any Tarkins in 3 boxes. :(

- I dont have a Rose but definitely an idea to try out.

Thanks Finnish!

Vader with eJabba is good fun. I actually also enjoyed playing some Vader Thrawn. No dice but its harsh on the opponents hand.

Im playing aphra with tarkin

and also with seventh

So I built 3 decks:

eDarth Vader (Sith Lord)/Nute

Aphra/Tarkin

eKenobi (new)/eMaz

- So with Vader/Nute, Nute gets killed right away. By turn 2-3. I like that I can set up Vader fast & he can hit like a truck when rolling well. The deck isn't fast enough despite running Leadership & Tactical Mastery. I went against Yoda/Reeiken/Maz mill & got milled out way too fast. I went against Mother/Kallus & that hits like a truck & has speed. I'll keep messing around with this deck cause I just feel it needs tweaking. Any suggestions of cards?

- Aphra/Tarkin just isn't great. Aphra needs more support. I tried to make her work soooo bad & Tarkin is epic but Aphra doesn't shine in this deck at all. Tarkin does all the work. I'll keep Aphra & all her droids/ships away until the next set where I am hoping there will be more support for her. Hoping they make her evil wookie partner a red character & that they make a Triple Zero droid. :) If any of you come up with any ideas, please share.

- Kenobi/Maz seems to be the deck I'm going to stick with. It's a big stall deck with all the shields & then hits like a truck if Kenobi is equipped properly.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Barby :)
