Kung Fu Genesys Setting

By Moon of Dalo, in Genesys

Thoughts on having Talents pyramid and a separate Fighting Style Talent pyramid?

I don't know how is the system in Genesys yet, i just saw that talents working in 5 levels and being free to everyone one. I don't know how people are creating specific or restrict talents or something specific for a particular class/concept.

Anyway, thinking about kung fu, it's possible to create talents related to the combat fundaments, like more damage, basic maneuvers, more vigor, etc. We can think about the chi, with more mystical powers and willpower.

The fighting style should follow what we know, the animal styles or whatever styles, providing specific maneuvers and bonus. To do this, i recommend see what other games already gave done, to pick some ideas.

Not Genesys specific, but Misdirected Mark recently started hosting a podcast focused on Wuxia and applications in gaming. There may be some great resources for those interested in this genre.

I'd say do one pyramid. Why split off the two? That would just require more of an XP sink for the PCs.

GURPS Martial Arts might be a good buy if you want to do this sort of setting; it has lots of GM advice on how to run such adventures, plus lots of martial arts styles you can mine for ideas on new Talents.

For a sourcebook that old Palladium book Ninjas and Superspies is quite good too. I find myself wishing my copy hadn't disappeared.

It would. That is part of the concept for me anyways.

My elevator pitch to the locals was

KungFu Scifi: Chi IS a thing, it can power space travel. It is also used to power cyberware. Schools/Traditions/Corps/Governments compete for resources.

It's Cyber-KungFu in Space!

I have the old Sanguine Games Usagi Yojimbo RPG. Going to be using that mostly as the basis for the schools and "talents" with a healthy dose of FFG Star Wars.

I wonder if it might make more sense to do talent trees, then, like in Star Wars. Maybe let your PCs start with a normal Genesys talent pyramid for their non-fighting powers, but also let them take a "fighting style" talent tree at character creation. Buying into new fighting style trees costs 20 XP for the second style, 30 XP for the third, etc. You could just port in the Hired Gun: Marauder and Bounty Hunter: Martial Artist with little fuss, and then have the various Lightsaber trees with modifications. (Just replace Lightsaber with something else and modify anything that requires a Force die roll.) That could be fun.

That's the idea.

I was thinking a bit more singular when it comes to the tradition, that way people aren't trying to dip into various traditions looking for 'ultimate combos'

Perhaps making a special Talent, one for each style, then make it ranked with each rank unlocking a new move?
