Ship Archetypes Topic (and a bit of fun)

By Erion_Fett, in X-Wing

Edit: This topic is unfinished, but I will thank all considerations. I will make better explanations for each category from time to time.

I don't know if there already exists a thread where people explores the ship archetypes of this game. I think most people know what ship is like an "Arc Dodger" ship. But, what about the rest of the archetypes? Now, with all the variety of ships in the three factions. I think it is interesting to clasify the ships in some subcategories. My categories are:

Small Ships:

All-Purpose Ship: Good in everything, mid cost in points, mid stats, mid dial, some upgrades.

Criteria:

  • 2-3 Agility.
  • Medium Dial.
  • Around 5 life.

Arc-Dodger: Good offensive power (except for you, poor A Wing), almost best dials in the game (see Air superiority), fragile ships which depends on not being shooted and 3 or more Green dices.

Criteria:

  • 3 Agility.
  • More than 4 Green maneuvers in 1 and/or 2 Speed.
  • 5 Speed Move (or equivalent).
  • Impulse Action (Can equip AT).
  • Less or equal than 4 life.

Cheap All purpose-Ship / Swarm maker: Almost bad in everything, except for the cost. It has certainly good aces/unique pilots, but swarms are the place to shine.

Criteria:

  • Cost less than 14p
  • Has generic pilots

Air Superiority: All the same benefits of an All-Purpose Ships BUT ALSO great dial, great upgrade options, amazing pilots... Problem? The high cost.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Light Ordnance Carrier: Not much agility, intermedium life, and if you want to hit hard with these, you gonna need some secondary weapons.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Ordnance Carrier: The same as below but better, and with more cost, usually. Maybe, a required archetype of ships with Reload Action. Intermedium dial or reposition tricks.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Heavy Bomber: The light (Scurrg and K Wing) and shadow (Tie Punisher) of X Wing Miniatures Game. Ships based in having a lot of bombs and missiles, with bad/intermedium dial. And (Poor Tie Punisher) Amazing Turret options.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Light Disruptor Ship: Almost an archetype exclusive of Scum. Ships with not much life, intermedium agility, not so damage... But a great way to disrupt the plans of your enemy. Dirty tricks. Oh... And also Sabine and "Don't shoot me" Rex.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Light Support Ship: Fith Essence of Rebels. As Light Disruptors but helping your allies.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Low Agility / Jousting Expert Ships: If an Arc-Dodger is a ship which requires to be out of range to survive, this is the contrary idea. If you can stand enemy fire and/or answer with heavier fire, you are in this kind of position. Usually ships with 1 agility, bad/intermedium dial, and some great combination of shield+hull.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Double-Arc Ships: Basically as Jousting Experts but with two arcs. You can joust and keep running, to make use of your back fire.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Big Ships:

Crew Carrier / Slow Fire Platform: WHALES. Whales that can stop in space. Whales that have people living inside, supporting other ships or supporting the ship they are inside. Oh, and the U Wing!.

Criteria:

  • 0-speed move.
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Air Superiority Big Ship: Yeah, the IG-2000 was pretty difficult to classificate.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Heavy Fire Platform: "Hey I want to play an epic-like ship at 100 points". Here you go!.

Criteria:

  • 10 or more hull.
  • 0 Agility.

360º Fire Platform: Maybe similar to Jousting Experts but with 360º Arc fire.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Double-Arc Big Ship: The same as below, but in big ships.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

Super-Heavy Bomber: Resistance bomber. Maybe we will see some ships like this to consider this a category? We will see, eventually.

Criteria:

  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx
  • xxxxxx

some hybrids: Maybe the Tie Silencer and Star Viper are a mix of an arc-dodger instead of Air Superiority, Tie Silencer for its dial and Star Viper for its low HP. Also, The T-70 X Wing can fin as an All-Purpose Ship or an Arc Dodger. I don't know very well how to consider Tie Striker also. And the category of Low Agility Jousting Expert is more based in stats+dial thanother thing.

This is my classification now! How do you consider this ships and categories?

How is the A-wing and the TAP not in the same category? Very similar dial, very similar upgrade bar, same stats.

How is TAP the same as TIE Advanced. One has significantly more firepower, the other has a crazy dial and ability to equip AT.

The TIE FO isn't cheap.

The Bomber is a light ordnance carrier? It has the second most ordnance slots of any ship. It doesn't have anything else.

TIE SF is the double arc, not FO.

The Decimator is a PWT, not a heavy fire platform.

Obviously, I play empire, I couldn't care less about the other ships, but in that regard your classification stinks. It is inaccurate, has unclear definitions, and it seems you don't really know Imperial ships very much.

It's a pass from me.

Somebody get this man some sunshine in his life....

@RufusDaMan I am very grateful for your opinion. As a way of excuse myself, I will say that I didn't have much time to explain in Deep all my considerations of categories and criteria, and I will edit and make a profound analysis of each category from time to time, this is just a prototype. I don't consider this a definitive guide to Ship classes.

I posted this even incomplete, in order to see corrections and opinions from people. I know I have no so Deep knowdledge of this game as other, but I enjoy analyzing in Deep this game itself, despite my lack of experience. For example, I thought that having all 2 maneuvers Green and less than 4 life is required to be an arc-dodger, OR a natural very unpredictable repositioning that don't require action (Decloack and Adaptive Ailerons) that's why I considered the Tie Advanced Prototype an All-Purpose ship. But, considering your words, I am thinking that having simply a great number of Green maneuvers (or almost all of them) in 1 or 2 speed moves, and Access to AT are criteria that I have to have in account.

Also, I am thinking in ships with natural free repositioning (Tie Striker and Tie Phantom, for example), as a different category.

In other way, which categories do you consider, basing in your knowdledge? And, basing in this chart, how do you consider Tie/fo?

My fault for Tie/sf, just a mistake of spelling.

The Tie Bomber is complex case with respect to Ordnance Carriers. It has 6 life, 2 agility, the only ship with Gunboat which have 2 agility. It is clearely not a heavy bomber just from its stats. But in terms of repositioning, it is clearely worst than Gunboat. I am looking its dial in Deep. It has 4 greens, 3 reds. Red turns. Maybe because 2 agility and 6 hull you can consider him the only Light Ordnance carrier, or a medium ordnance carrier, being Y wings and Aggressor the only ordnance carrier. For the moment, I will consider Tie bomber as médium ordnance carrier, due to its simmilarity with Kimogila's dial and number of upgrades (6 the bomber and 5 the Kimo)

Respect from decimator, what is PWT? Heavy Fire Platforms I considered as ships with 0 Green, and 10 or more Hull, which have 360º degrees arc, thats why I was joking with Epic, it is almost the same stats a C-ROC.

You didn't categorize the TIE/FO... but why if I may ask? For as far as I am concerned it belongs with the TIE/LN (regular imperial tie fighter). Correct me if I'm wrong ofcourse.

I like the idea! What if you use typical military aircraft definitions for the ships? Maybe like this:

I have always loved taking archetypes into account when making a new list, so I think I am going to save this topic for the future :D
As an Imperial only player, I can contribute with a few comments:

- TIE/fo: Right now it doesn't fit any category, because of the criteria of 14p for the cheap ships... but even though they don't fit into the swarm archetype, I would say that they are the perfect "cheap all-purpose ship" due to the flexibility given by the "tech" slot

- Decimator: I think they fit better in the 360º category, although the "almost epic" is not far from reality

Also, I don't know where to put the attack shuttle (AKA phantom I)... maybe as a light support ship? is usually supporting the ghost...

PS. Ghost II should be Phantom II :)
