Wide Area Barrage Swarm: musings

By Parkdaddy, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Trying to come up with an effective fleet for Wide Area Barrage I’m swarm format. My thought on WAB as it relates to squadrons, is that I shouldn’t have to invest too much into AS capabilities because of the dual threat the critical effect represents: it can target both ships and squadrons. Thus a medium CAP is all one should need when WAB is present in sufficient numbers. It needs to be really comfortable with second player, to force your opponent into range before your combat ships have activated.

I know Hammerheads have been maligned for their fragility, but I’ve had success flying a single one at a time here and there. They also present the cheapest options for both platform and rerolls, by far. For a mere 39 points, you get the WAB and 2 rerolls. Factoring in Sato and a CF, that’s an easy damage plus a crit damage at long range. The only issue is that a Hammerhead using WAB prefers to target squadrons with the effect, given their low density of black dice. So a facing light squadron build with heavy shields will give low returns.

Going with no Intel is risky, but I have grit mingled in there, with Relay so that the CAP can spread out, ideally not able to have the entire force tied down and able to reach any ship for Sato’s effect by round 2. Strategic for dealing with objective play.

With Hondo/Ahsoka, I have a reliable means for getting Squadron tokens to any 2 ships on a dime while still reserving a CF dial for maximum crit probability. Admo, as always, is the real lynchpin of the list, and provides significant threat while serving as the nearly indestructible flagship. Spinal Armament Means Admo gets to trade for 2 blacks on all sides, instead of 1/2 front/side.

the biggest change that might make this better is dropping a HH for Toryn/Bright Hope to assist the Awings and adding Slicer Tools, but I wanted combat ships, reduntandly.

That 30 is toooooo fat for Sato. He would rather have six activations or an mc75 ....

That 30 is quite fat. I could trim from it, the CAP, and drop a HH to squeeze in 2 flots for 6 activations. But fat 30s are my favorite.... and I really don’t like the activation game for activation’s sake. With Pryce inbound, that’ll also become a real nixer on the high activation—low quality shenanigans. Admittedly, this is quite low quality with the HH, but there is an actual strategy to it beyond the “activation game.”

That was my thought too. RBD shores up the weakness to ramming, but its still gonna be an issue.

In my experience MC30s get little love from RBD. How many face-up can you expect to discard 1? 2? Dare you wait until you have 3 (if ever)?

Or will that shrimp pop without RBD ever having a chance to trigger?

Derlin+Admo helps a bit, I'm not sold.

There have been multiple times where I have taken a rather large shot on Admo towards the end of a round, and declined to use a redirect. Reason being that I could control how much damage got through to the hull, save my shields, and then recover those hull points with RBD. Free money.

Having Derlin helps to reduce the damage, and Admo helps with removing crits to ensure I’m taking facedown damage cards. That kind of damage control works like a charm.

Now i saw this and my first thought was

Fleet 3730 (399/400)
===================
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 26)
+ General Cracken (26)
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 2)
+ Wide-Area Barrage (2)
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 2)

Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 2)
+ Wide-Area Barrage (2)
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 2)
+ Wide-Area Barrage (2)
3 x A-wing Squadron (11)

Then i looked at this and it changed to:

Fleet 3730 (395/400)
===================
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 26)
+ General Cracken (26)
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 3)
+ Wide-Area Barrage (2)

+ Task Force Organa (1)
Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 + 3)
+ Wide-Area Barrage (2)
+ Task Force Organa (1)
3 x Z-95 Headhunter Squadron (7)

...... and i decided as funny as this would be to fly, as a troll or a joke, its probably not gonna work.

^_^

Yeah, this may suffer from survivability issues, particularly against squadrons. Also, if you haven’t tried at least a 6+ activation fleet before, 9 is going to strain the brain

@DrakonLord try an mc30 with OE WAB TFA hammerhead friends. 9 activations is too many.

After running a 200pt list with 20 odd activations,9 seems sooo nice though....

.... yeah ill stick to my 4 activation fleets.
