Curious innocent question

By ephrael, in Star Wars: Legion

I have a few friends who already own quite a few expansions and minis for Star Wars Imperial Assault. We are planning on jumping into Legion with both feet first and collecting and painting the new stuff as fast as we can get it. My question is will our current collection of IA minis be useful at all in the new game system? I understand there are some scale issues but I would love to be able to use my bounty hunters right away in Legions. Any thoughts or advice on making the two separate games mesh into one playable game? Or should we just shelve our IA stuff for now and stick with straight Legion? Thanks for any feedback.

Probably not.... we have conflicting photos ( stormtrroper and luke comparisons that are way out and another of a royal guard thats bigger than a legion rebel without the base difference) but the current tweet from ffg about atst sizes is telling.

Choose one. Legion. Not to be that guy but this is a bad time and place to bring up IA/Legion. Someone will bring up “oh dont get legion, IA is better” or “dont get legion its not 15mm”

Don't get Legion, it's actually a terrain focused mini game, not a combat focused mini game.

Huh? Terrain focused? Anyway...

The short of it is that Legion and IA are 100% different games that both use miniatures from Star Wars. Scale arguments aside, you would need to invest time and effort make them work (game-play wise)and it would be doubtful they would be balanced. Stay with IA if you want a story campaign and go with IA if you want a pure battle game similar to DUST, Runewars, X-Wing, FoW, etc.

You could also wait until the characters you want are released for Legion and at that point there will be plenty of reviews and video of play to help you judge.

You kinda said IA twice so i assume you mean Legion for the second. Also, you could use Legion minis in IA but not the other way round

1. Officially, you need the Legion plastic (models) and the Legion paper (upgrades, unit cards) to field a unit. There's (currently) no official mechanism for using stuff from one game in the other.

2. Unofficially, you can use IA models as proxies of Legion squads with the other player's permission (since that's going to be your IA playing friends, answer is probably yes) if you have access to the appropriate unit/upgrade cards (so you know what it is/can do). That could mean having the real stuff on hand (eg, 2 real squads and 1 proxied squad), or printing off card scans from the internet (you're planning to buy/support the game regardless, so IMO it's fine to print off cards in the short/medium term). That only covers units in both games, though - eg Stormtroopers - most of the IA stuff isn't in Legion (yet).

3. Even more unofficially, you could use your IA stuff by inventing Legion rules for it, given the caveat that you'll have all the problems homebrewed stuff always has.

Up to you and your opponents. Most people will do the first, some people the second, relatively few the third. It's your plastic, use it however you find fun.

I think in time some creative types out there will make their own custom cards & upgrades that would allow for IA figures to be "ported" over to Legion. It would have to be for a very friendly/casual game among friends. These are all toys after all; you can play it any way you want to. Maybe all you'd have to buy is some Legion range rulers, tokens & dice and you could proxy (print at home) most of the squad lists/upgrades, etc.

Give it time, but I think you should try and find anywhere that is doing demos of the game to get a hands-on taste of it if you can.
