Best Implementation of Nym for Regionals

By schmi, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello all. This is a request for a meta read and a bit of a list(s) critique regarding regionals.

I have decided that I will be taking Nym in some fashion because I feel he has all the tools that address many threats out there right now. Below I have pasted 4 lists that incorporate Nym and address the meta in their own way. What do you think? The last two lists seem to be the most competitive to me.

Harpoon Crit Triggers (99)

•Ten Numb (36) - B-Wing
Veteran Instincts (1), Collision Detector (0), "Mangler" Cannon (4)

•Airen Cracken (24) - Z-95 Headhunter
Veteran Instincts (1), Harpoon Missiles (4), Guidance Chips (0)

•Captain Nym (39) - Scurrg H-6 Bomber
Veteran Instincts (1), Harpoon Missiles (4), •Bomblet Generator (3), •Havoc (0), Guidance Chips (0), Trajectory Simulator (1), •"Genius" (0)

This list is intended to obliterate a single ship of choice while hopefully throwing in some collateral damage. Ten shoots last to trigger harpoons. Cracken helps set up a full mods shot/re-positioning on first shot + shoots a missile. Afterward he is just annoying and adds extra actions. All ships at PS 10. Played this twice with 2-0 record.

Fearless Boba (98)

•Boba Fett (55) - Firespray-31
Fearlessness (1), •Dengar (3), Cluster Missiles (4), Glitterstim (2), •Slave I (0), Engine Upgrade (4), Extra Munitions (2)

•Captain Nym (43) - Scurrg H-6 Bomber
Veteran Instincts (1), Autoblaster Turret (2), Extra Munitions (2), Harpoon Missiles (4), •Bomblet Generator (3), •Havoc (0), Long-Range Scanners (0), Trajectory Simulator (1), •"Genius" (0)

This list is similar to above in that it is designed to focus one ship down in first round of shooting. The fearlessness + CM + Glittership + Boba Ability allows Boba to get into range one of an entire squad, wreck something, then (hopefully) avoid too much damage. Never tried this list.

NymRanda (98)

•Miranda Doni (46) - K-Wing
Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Harpoon Missiles (4), Sabine Wren (2), •Bomblet Generator (3), Long-Range Scanners (0)

•Captain Nym (52) - Scurrg H-6 Bomber
Veteran Instincts (1), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Harpoon Missiles (4), Proton Bombs (5), Thermal Detonators (3), •Havoc (0), Guidance Chips (0), Trajectory Simulator (1), •"Genius" (0)

Just two solid ships. Great alpha strike paired with TS Proton Bombs. Should be especially good against a gunboat missile squad. Never played.

DenNym (99)

•Dengar (52) - JumpMaster 5000
Expertise (4), K4 Security Droid (3), •Punishing One (12)

•Captain Nym (47) - Scurrg H-6 Bomber
Veteran Instincts (1), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Harpoon Missiles (4), •Bomblet Generator (3), •Havoc (0), Guidance Chips (0), Trajectory Simulator (1), •"Genius" (0)

Again, two very solid ships. Is this fine how it stands or should Nym drop TLT (and replace with ABT) in favor of Proton Bombs and something else instead of bomblet? Never played.

If I had to rank them...

  1. NymRanda is a super strong list in the meta right now, you'll probably do well with that.
  2. DenNym (Levi's, I presume) is also pretty solid. Scum Nym can use TS a lot more effectively than Rebel, since he can chuck a bomb before he moves, then keep flying at it with impunity.
  3. Harpoon Crits seems strong, if a bit of a one-trick pony. You may have some trouble with ultra high aces, though.
  4. Fearless Boba looks nice, but I'm not sure if pairing Dengar and Boba Fett is best... might be re-roll overkill? You may get better mileage out of a K4 Security Droid to re-acquire your target locks for the next cluster missile shot. For Nym's Autoblaster, especially against fast turrets (Falcon, Dash, Asajj, etc), you may not be able to keep the opponent close enough to have much effect.

I agree, I think MiraNym would be your strongest. Brutal, actually.

DenNym is definitely on par, however. Dengar is naturally way better at shooting, but Miranda's bombs and Sabine can't be denied. Plus, I like rebels, so I like it more.

I don't think the PS10s would be viable after the first volley. Boba Nym could definitely be fun. Lots of fun, but the competitive edge I think would still go to DeNym or MiraNym.

I think I agree with both of you. NymRanda is probably the best because it is just very strong with its ordinance and bomb shenanigans. It has been doing quite well from what I have seen. Funnily enough, none of these 4 lists were taken from anyone else on the internet. So it seems, in a vacuum, NymRanda and DenNym as listed are the most ideal builds since they were independently built identically XD. I even thought I was being clever by calling the last one DenNym, but it seems plenty of people beat me to it.:D

@emeraldbeacon How do you think the lists you numbered 2-4 would fare against a NymRanda list? I get the impression 3 & 4 could wipe off a Nym first round fairly easily if flown well. But as you said, the lists may not like some of the other meta showings at regionals.

As for Dengar being re-roll overkill, I think you are correct at range 1. But when Boba is not at range one, I have found Dengar to be wonderful for defense by allowing me to do a defensive action while still maintaining offense. I played with the idea of K4, but the greens on the Firespray are dreadful.

@Greebwahn Why don't you feel PS10's will be viable after the first volley? (not disagreeing, just curious what your thought is). I do agree that the DenNym and NymRanda lists are most competitive. Although, I am beginning to wonder if the other two lists might be better meta calls as people will start anti-NymRanda building here pretty soon.

@schmiHave you thought about, or have the means, to fly a Shadowcaster with Nym? You would have plenty of points to add a very well equipped Ketsu or Asajj with a nice bid if you run your below Nym build (which I've flown and love).

  1. NymRanda, the mirror match, may come down to who gets initiative. Given the currently consensus on the way TLT and Harpoons work, you really want to make sure the other guy has it; that way, their TLTs will cancel results before the Harpooned cards on you trigger; and vice versa for you.
  2. DenNym has a solid chance against MiraNym, though you will be sacrificing Dengar's mobility to Nym's bombs. Just remember that, for every matchup against Miranda, if you don't handle her in the early game, you will have a tough time dealing with her consistent damage from TLT and incredibly annoying regenerative powers. Try to keep the two separate to defend against Harpoon splash damage, and focus down one ship, hard.
  3. Harpoon Crits will get one nice round of shooting, if your opponent lets you... but after that, you might find yourself outgunned. The Z-95 will be largely useless after that point, and an easy target for cheap points. With the maneuverability and speed of MiraNym, you may be hard pressed to keep Ten Numb on target, and your setup on Nym doesn't allow for any significant error. Genius will kill your bomblet if you use him, so you have to be SUPER careful of when you pull that trigger - even more so without Sabine to back him up.
  4. Fearless Boba will be fun to fly, for sure, but I just don't see you having enough firepower to maintain the damage race against MiraNym. IF you can land a Boba Fett range one front arc shot with target lock, you're golden... but that can be a tall order with two ships that're good at running away.

I have not really seen much Shadowcaster play lately. How do they fare against missile and bomb lists? It seems like tractor beaming things would be pretty good in this meta right now. I like how mobile they are as well, although im not completely sure they could stay out of missile zones because they are fairly predictable imo.

1) Do you think 98 points is enough for an initiative bid in that case? Im not really sure what else could go.

3) I agree the z95 is an easy target afterwards but im not convinced he is useless. He still grants a fair amount of actions when he shoots, which is pretty huge in a damage race, imo. I do agree than Ten will be too slow to be able to chase anything. My biggest annoyance with the list is the lack of any way to get two more points of stuff on there for EM without sacrificing anything significant.

4) I agree here due to the lack of TS proton bombs and the like in the list. Although a fearless CM would be the dream.

Largely because it's build around Harpoons, which, for you, disappear quite fast. Cracken and Ten are very vulnerable pilots, and Nym without a Turret is gambly.

Its already started... Anyway, it is always useful to see what other people will try to do to counter you so you can counter the counter... if that made sense...

Yeah, I have began reading all the NymRanda anti-lists. Especially the thread going on in this forum at the moment.

I love flying the Shadow Caster, especially Asajj. Here are two options for you using the above Nym list for both Ketsu and Asajj. With Ketsu the list come in at 96 Pts while with Asajj the list comes in at 95 Pts. So you can swap out Trajectory Simulator (based on the new FAQ) with Advanced Sensors for +2 pt for some nice pre-movement adjustment and comes in at 98/97 Pts with a 3/2 pt bid respectively.

1. Ketsu Focused (comes in at 96 Total Squad Points)

2. "Time Walk" Asajj Focused (comes in at 95 Total Squad Points)

Hope this helps!
