Is there a cheat cheat for setting up the game? I am a newer player that am constantly confusing setup area, size the of the player area, how big the deployment zones are from edges, standard object placing rules, and all of the other terms one might read while going through the objective cards and setting up the game. I know this is a very noobie question, but would help me as learn the game.

Not as such.
(Unless modified by, say, fleet ambush)
Play Area = whole board.
Setup Area = Whole board excluding distance 5 away of the short edges.
Deployment Area = The portion of the setup Area that is within distance 3 of the Long Board Edges.
Obstacles are in the Setup Area
Ships are in the deployment Area.
Squadrons are in the Setup Area, as long as they are within distance 2 of a ship.
In effect, there is a Distance 5 strip on the outside edges of the board that ALWAYS CONTAINS NOTHING during Setup , that you are later able to fly into ?

Wait, you can place obstacles within distance 3 of the long edges?

No.
The Setup section, point 5 forbids this.

Thanks, I thought so.

In minefields, sure ?
A general tip I would give new players is to buy a silver sharpie and an extra wide yoga mat. You are out about 30.
Take one side and use a yardstick (or other straight edge).
-Add the two lines running from long edge to long edge 1 foot (range 5) in from the short edges. You now have setup area defined.
-Draw straight lines distance 3 and 5 from the long edges. Have them go the full length between the first two lines drawn. You now have deployment laid out (distance 3) and another line relevant to some objectives (distance 5 line.
-Draw two last lines. 2 feet in from each edge, parallel to the short sides. They run between the two lines that are distance 5 in from each long edge. These last two lines define a 2x1 foot box in the center of the playmat.
I did this when learning the game. It helps to really visualize what you are working with. You still have the other side for games later.
