about Retreat & 3rd/4th Actions in monsters combat list

By Desterdee, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all,

My friends & I started RTL yesterday with the tutorial... and some spiders poped up with something like:

1. Come close to the closest hero.

2. Attack the hero.

3. Retreat if closer than 2 or less to a hero.

As monsters are supposed to do only 2 actions if there's no mention doing more than 2, the spiders moved and attacked the closest hero.

However, one of us suggested that "Retreat" could probably not be counted as an action.

So we decided that the spider would retreat 1 space away from the hero.

I've got 2 questions about retreat:

1. Did the spider have to retreat or not?

2. In case of a monster has to retreat and the number of (retreat) spaces is not mentioned, how many cases, it should retreat?

Thanks for your replies.

Lazily copy-pasted from the CRRG:

Retreat

  • Retreat is a term used to describe movement of figures in Road to Legend.
  • When retreating, a figure spends all of its remaining movement points to move as far away from the closest enemy figure as possible. If a figure has no movement points, it does not retreat.
  • Retreating does not cause the figure to perform a move action to gain movement points.
  • During the movement, the figure can decrease distance to the closest enemy figure if by doing so the end result allows it to be farther away.

I have an other question about retreating . The monster tries to end the movement as far away as possible from the closest hero . Who is consindered to be the closest hero ? The closest one that was closest before the monster started retreating or it means the closest after the movement points for retreat have been spent .. is there an official answer about that ? . Because if it is the first case then the monster may and its movement right next to to an other hero which doen't make lots of sense.... We are playing it the other way so far as a house rule

We play these automated rules in the worst possible way for us heroes.

So the question for us is how would I play it as the overlord in regard of the listed rule.

It gets more difficult but way more interesting.

There is nothing that says "the closest hero" 🙂 You should be as far as possible from each of the heroes 🙂

I am interested in any official rules clarification or a definate answer

The rtl rules on retreat states that that the monsters goes as many spaces as possible from the closest hero when retreating . My question was about the rule of retreating in general. So my answer is not answered yet ... Is there an official answer ?

The Official answer is in the Official Rule you mention 🙂
