New upgrade idea - defensive posture

By TheWiseGuy, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Defensive posture - heraldry - 5 point

Exhaust this card when an accuracy is used to target a figure in your unit. You decide where the damage is placed.

Just an idea. Would benefit all factions. Figure upgrades give flavor to lists but lately people run figureless lists for fear of loosing them.

What do you think?

Interesting idea. I like the idea of making figure upgrades last a little longer. As a Heraldry upgrade, though, you leave out Outland Scouts, Heavy Crossbowmen, Spined Threshers, Flesh Rippers, andCarrion Lancers (though that last one currently doesn't matter). It looks like Daqan gets hit the hardest since the Spearmen can take it (which is great), the Oathsworn can take it just for Hawthorne, and the Rune Golems can take it for no reason.

I wonder if this kind of ability would be good as a "battlefield upgrade." I'm imagining an upgrade type that affects your whole army. There would nedd to be several options before implementing something like that.

OR! what if that upgrade type only existed on large, legendary units? That way you have to have one of those things in your army in order to get this type of army-wide ability. Just brainstorming.

Yah those units you listed who don't get it don't really need it too bad. Its mainly for infantry units as that is where the most synergy within one unit happens.

I just hate running something fun like mistland saboteur but having it die first attack. Or necromancer and dead. This isn't super cheap either. I think it would be fair.

True.

Although mini Heroes sound fun :).

I was just trying to think of a way to solve the distribution issue. If you introduce this new army-wide upgrade slot, then all players have it, but don't have any cards to fill it. How do they get those cards? Do they have to buy a new unit just for that card? What if they don't want that unit? What if they buy 4 packs? Will they wish that card was a different one since they now have useless multiples?

If such a card came with a unique unit that was the only unit that could equip it, then people wouldn't get useless copies and nobody would feel like they were buying an expansion just for that card since they'd be getting a new unique unit and they need that unit to run the card anyway.

Now, there are many other ways to address the issue, and as you said, a banner upgrade would suffice for most cases since main infantry all have it (though I still think Scouts and Crossbowmen would miss it).

Could always drop that type of upgrade on heroes. Army upgrade available to all heroes by default. Only one per [200]pts or something like that.

Just have them show up with a new hero unit. Then the only thing would be if someone doesn't want to buy a specific faction hero.

Or as a new card type in the same vein as Deployments and Objectives. Either a global option, or something available for both sides to bring their own. Add a rule that if one side does not have a modifier card, then neither side can use them unless agreed upon... or something. Maybe "Engagement Stance" or "Engagement Modifier" as the deployment upgrade type or something similar. Definitely have points count against the side. There can be wildly different possibilities, and with using points, it can eliminate the need for both to have them. Setting the appropriate costs would definitely be important.

I would make it fill the training slot since thematically that's kinda what the upgrade is. Also, if it's in the heraldry slot, you never get the option to protect heraldry figure upgrades which seems a little arbitrary to me.

The problem is only reanimates get a training slot if the infantry if I remember correctly.

And Reanimate Archers, Deepwood Archers, Darnati Warriors, Outland Scouts, and Heavy Crossbowmen. So the only faction that doesn't have an infantry unit with access to Training upgrades is the Uthuk Y'llan. The only infantry units without Training upgrades are Berserkers and Spearmen.

Fair enough. I still think the coverage on heraldry is a bit better. I guess the upgrade could be specific to each faction for which slot it goes in.

I agree. The training upgrade leaves out an entire faction, and that's not ideal.

People are intentionally not running figures? Is Kari that prevalent? I usually only see 1 figure sniped a game. Maybe two.

The title and actions are more in line with training slot I'd think.

I have heard of figureless upgrade lists. It sucks when you build a synergy and then loose a figure and the whole combo comes crashing down haha. I play very much vs Latari with multiple archer units so I may be getting sniped more often then the average user. I swear every elf gets a blue dice or two!

Totally correct. I originally said training slot but then it would have been Waiqar specific so....
