Youngster Gambit?

By emeraldbeacon, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I got to thinking about Debris Gambit, and how you could really abuse it, and who would really best use that card. Essentially, you need someone who could benefit from extra evade tokens, or an evade action at all... that got me thinking about the TIE/sf. But do you really want to invest points into that for an EPT?

But then I remembered Youngster...

  • 17 - Youngster (TIE Fighter), Debris Gambit
  • 27 - Zeta Specialist (TIE/sf Fighter), Collision Detector, Pattern Analyzer, Lightweight Frame, Special Ops Training
  • 27 - Zeta Specialist (TIE/sf Fighter), Collision Detector, Pattern Analyzer, Lightweight Frame, Special Ops Training
  • 27 - Zeta Specialist (TIE/sf Fighter), Collision Detector, Pattern Analyzer, Lightweight Frame, Special Ops Training
  • 98 - Total

It's not competitive at all, but it could be a fun exercise in obstacle avoidance. The Zetas roll forward, using Debris Gambit to stock up on evade tokens even after red maneuvers. Youngster just tries to stay close, dodge arcs, and protect himself so the SFs can double-tap and do the heavy lifting...

Main concern is that no one can hit worth $#!+

Looks fun though!

I think juke SFs would be good for that sort of stuff. You could have two with fire control/pattern analyser/lwf/title/juke as well as a TIE fighter with juke. Makes them offensive as well!

  • "Youngster" (15)
    • Debris Gambit (2)
  • "Omega Ace" (20)
    • Swarm Leader (3)
    • Advanced Optics (2)
  • "Howlrunner" (18)
    • Juke (2)
  • "Mauler Mithel" (17)
    • Juke (2)
  • "Scourge" (17)
    • Juke (2)

Miniswarm with serious teeth. Evade up (preferably more than once with Youngster), chip away their shields with Howlrunner, Mithel and Scourge, then burn your extra evades to bring on a bunch of crits with Omega Ace.

Problem is, you can upgrade those Zetas to Omegas and give each of them Debris Gambit for 5 points less than the cost of fielding youngster with Debris Gambit, and I'm not sure he adds enough punch to justify his existence by himself.

The two problems are that the TIE fighters already have the evade action, so Youngster is only helping if you manage to get 2+ evades, and Howlrunner is tempting you to hold a range 1 formation which is generally a bad idea in the harpoons-and-bombs world the game has become.

Agreed - although you may lose a ship or you'll have to step down how well-equipped they are. But I think the best use for Youngster is generally either handing out an ability to a big swarm (4+ ships) or else providing a "double EPT" to the more elite types.

Youngster w/ Debris Gambit and a No-Expense-Spared Quickdraw & Backdraft pairing might work?
