Mulligan Weaknesses

By player1631906, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Just a dumb question. Is it mandatory that u put aside any weakness that u draw in your starting hand?

I mean there are some senarios that you are better of keeping them in your starting hand for example Mark Haringans Shellshock.

From step 8 of "Setting Up The Game" (page 27 of the Rules Reference), it looks like it is mandatory rather than optional.

Indeed.

Quote

8. Draw opening hands . Each player draws 5 cards. Each player, in player order, may mulligan once at this time.
• Each weakness card drawn during this step is ignored, set aside (without resolving it), and replaced by drawing another card from the deck. Upon completion of this step, shuffle each of these weakness cards back into its owner’s deck.

Yeah, its clear above, but you don't mulligan weaknesses. You just discard and draw another card.

Eg if your opening hand has 2 weaknesses in it, you will draw two more cards and discard the weaknesses. Then you will decide if you want to mulligan any of the the 5 in your hand.

You actually set the weaknesses aside. Once you have your starting hand, you shuffle the cards set aside back into your deck.

Example: I'm playing Jenny Barnes. My staring hand has 2 copies of Overpower, Searching For Izzy, Backstab, and Drawn To The Flame. I set aside Searching For Izzy because it is a weakness; it is not by choice because I cannot have a weakness in my starting hand. I draw Knife. At this point, I choose to mulligan. On my turn, I declare to mulligan three cards: 1 copy of Overpower, Knife, and Drawn To The Flame. I set those cards aside and draw three more cards: Magnifying Glass, Amnesia, and Flashlight. I immediately set aside Amnesia because, once again, it is a weakness. I draw Unexpected Courage. At this point, no matter how I feel about my starting hand, I have to keep it because I used up my mulligan. I have five cards set aside: Searching For Izzy, Overpower, Knife, Drawn To the Flame, and Amnesia. These cards are now shuffled back into my deck, and play begins. I do not start the game with cards in my discard pile, unless directed to do so by the scenario set up.

Here are the final starting hands with set aside cards for both mulligan used and mulligan passed

passed: Overpower X2, Knife, Backstab, Drawn To the Flame (Set aside: Searching For Izzy)

used: Overpower, Unexpected Courage, Magnifying Glass, Flashlight, Backstab (Set aside: Searching For Izzy, Knife, Overpower, Drawn To The Flame, Amnesia)
