Any Coverage on the Koteis this month?

By Dydra, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

So we have a Kotei in the US this weekend and a Kotei in Ireland in 2 weeks. Anyone knows if FFG/Asmodee have any plans to make a video stream? Or everything will be community driven(again)?

FFG/Asmodee don't do streaming themselves TMK, but they will partner with other volunteer groups to do streaming. For example, The Sixth Ring did the streaming from PAX.

I expect someone to stream, or at least record at the Cork Kotei but I have no idea what's planned for PAX South.

How does this even work? I mean they DID have a stream from Worlds and from the London event I believe =) What's the big deal to have 1-2 dedicated resources traveling and streaming around Europe/US

Andy Gordon and Jack Murray were exceptional at the L5RHonored event. In fact, I'd be happy listening to pretty much any combination of the 'cast members from Imperial Advisor and Sake House Brawl on commentary. Please make it happen!

Its easy to stream Worlds but they don't send their media equipment around the world for these events.

Who covered the London event? Asmodee Europe? What's the big deal for them to cover *at least* the Grand Koteis ...

I'm confused - have there been any Grand Koteis in Europe that haven't received coverage? My understanding was that Paris and Birmingham would be the first two. Are we complaining about things ahead of time?

I don't disagree, but apparently FFG/Asmodee does.

From the Facebook group, there's a guy from Cascade Games at PAX South looking at options for getting information out about how things are going at the events they manage. Not sure if that would include streaming, but Cascade might be the ones to at least talk to about it, since they're at least onsite for the events.

The London Honoured event was covered by a Dark Sphere, a London gaming shop that had the equipment.

It is our intention to have coverage at Warpcon, but there a number of things that need to go right for that to happen so no promises.

So ... today should be (now?) Day at the PAX Kotei ... no info on the tournament on reddit, no streams, no nothing =( Pretty sad about it .... I stray away from FB groups since seeing the toxicity levels in the AGoT one >.>

Well to sum up what Cascade posted, all the Dragon players were eliminated in the quarterfinals, Top 4 were Crane vs Phoenix and Scorpion vs Scorpion, Finals was Phoenix vs Scorpion, and Scorpion claimed the victory.

Where was the initial information you're summarizing posted?

Facebook. And the above 'summary' is almost verbatim from the post. (Cascade aren't posting regular detailed information)

Seems they will have presence in the two global Facebook groups going forwards.
I have no idea about other platforms (reddit etc).

Chris Portoff won - second Dragon Hatamoto to renounce his status and score success with the Scorpion. The Scorpion semi-finalist was Steve Palumbo. The Crane semi-finalist was James Balthis, who claims his third different Clan Hatamoto-ship.

^ This.

The rep from Cascade had previously indicated that part of his role at PAX South is to collect data on what works, what doesn't, and how to improve the community experience (posting updates for us is something extra he took on for us). He has indicated he is going to be looking into media/ release requirements for them to publicly post participant names and info, pictures, video, etc. He was under the impression participants needed to sign media release forms to do so, which is part of why none of that happened this time around (and a lack of spare hands to manage it). I believe he also mentioned looking into additional platforms, possibly including a separate website just for posting event updates and information.

Live streaming professional equipment is very expensive, both as an investment and even simply for renting. It's rather cumbersome too.

anyone can maybe pickup a cheap cam and attempt to do live stream, but if they don't make quality, they better not do it. And quality as a cost.

Not sure FFG or even Asmodee has a dedicated broadcast team they can fly around for any event (which has cost too).

Yep, at a glance that seems to match the list posted on Facebook by Cascade (typos and all). I think he posted decks for all 11 players who participated in the final elimination rounds.

Yeah, I'm aware it has costs. The point is, if you plan to roll out a game strongly revolved around OP ... one would think it's a good investment!
Also on a player level, if anyone can achieve 1080p streaming with a Go-Pro or similar, FFG/Asmodee/TO should allow that even on any Top32 table and such. This kind of investment isn't that expensive, because for 60FPS 1080p videos, you can get a decent quality camera for 200 EUR tops.

I'm not sure if this is just a written communication thing, or perhaps a consequence of posting in a second language, but commenting with a single question like this comes across as rude and brusque. We're not search engines for you, dude...if someone is providing you with helpful information or you have a request, being polite and courteous can go a long way.

But its not just the cost of the equipment, its the staff to set it up at the event , you need a commentator or two (yes they can be the same ones who do set up but they are still more staff that needs to be paid for the event and have to be separate from the judge and organizing team) and the cost of getting them and the equipment to wherever the event is being held. These are all things that add up.

There is also the question of player involvement at the event. Some players really don't like to play on Stream and that can cause issues with releases.

I was selected twice to be on the official stream at Worlds, but refused when I was told I could not use my play mat (from my local store, Black Moon Games). FFG appear to have a policy that requests players don't use custom mats or tokens, which I understand as they would be open to claims of favoritism towards certain manufacturers/producers if they did (and that's before you get into the questionable legality of unlicensed accessories). While that policy remains in place however, I will continue to decline those opportunities.

I was more than happy to appear on Rob St John's excellent stream though - he does a fantastic job, and is more lenient with play materials.
