So, I was thinking the other day and I think they could easily be added if they wanted to. First off, they might likely be some kind of upgrade similar to Titles in Armada or Modifications in X-wing where they don't require a specific slot on the card but can be added to a commander/leader character. R2 could likely give some boost to victory points if he is nearby or the like. Though 3PO might be the more interesting in that they could give him the ability to give beneficial tokens to people in range or possibly just the commander but his main ability would be that he adds life in some sense. He could be counted as another squad member to the commander so that if you would say remove Luke then you could remove him instead, though that might be a bit too powerful, so it might be the case where you can sacrifice 3PO to add a block to your defense or to cancel one damage you received during this attack.
R2 and 3PO
I'd like to see them on the battlefield. Maybe they'll attach to your commander? Imagine Luke with an "R2D2" upgrade, that can actually be shot, because it's represented by a miniature.
I could see them being used for objectives. Escort R2 somewhere to deactivate something.

I'm more in favour of this. I think that the miniatures on the standard version of this game should be combatants, combat medics at most. Though I'm all for having all kind of robots miniatures to give flavor to the board. I'm also hopping for a more narrative variant like the community driven inquisimunda.
I would say they could be listed as a "special force". We don't have any of those yet so they could be any number of specialized troops that have a vast array of abilities.

Maybe include new expansion objective cards and such. The ones they use at beginning of game. Shack it up a bit later after release
My SWIA Threepio and Artoo are definitely being used as objective markers. I actually bought several sets of both Threepio and Artoo as well as BT-1 and 0-0-0 and an extra Hera & C1-10P and created alternate paint schemes to use as objectives in custom skirmishes (R-3PO & K-3PO & TC-14 etc...). I also purchased several WOTC Gonk Droids for a tabletop version of EA's Star Wars BattleFront "Capture the Droid" mode.
Love to see this as well. Imperial probe droids IG droids. You name it. That would be smooth.

My expectations as well. I think prominent characters who don't fit into the "Commander" or "Trooper" category will act as Special Forces. I don't think "Special Forces" should be read as like... "Spec Ops"... I see it more as being really unique units or characters who may have odd roles or abilities in your team. Or a combination of what I said and "Spec Ops".
I see and like both sides of this
Use only as a card/upgrade ... makes sense ... or a droid (any type) becomes a tangible unit represented by a mini ... like it/makes sense
From an objective standpoint ... would be sort of cool to make the droid, first, the objective and, then, it becomes activated and part of your force. Total cake and eat it too scenario. Probably too complex.
I too anticipate Spec Op roles in future ... sniper or observer or intelligence officer (Imps) or spy (rebels) ... and, maybe, the droids become another option

Great to know I wasn't the only one, I ended up buying like 10 or so of the R2 sets and painted them all up with different paint jobs, I was going for having one that could be used for each astromech upgrade for X-wing for some cross play down the line. If only they would release pilots, and more importantly R4s and R5s for IA.

I bought a couple for that too but it feels really weird to have them be so small compared to the R2 units, I'm really holding out hope that FFG might make models for them at some point.

Trimming off the accessories on BT-1 and Chopper have them each resemble an R4 and R5 droid. I just used a hair dryer to soften up the limbs and carefully trimmed them off and a mild sanding. Some of my stuff can be seen in the SWIA Painting and Modification thread.

I use pilots that are on cards or droids for tokens during game and in showcase
