Moments from Casual Night

By theBitterFig, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Thought it'd be fun to have a thread of, not full battle reports per se, but just little moments from casual night or other times playing the game.

*edit* Intent being, for anyone else to toss in quick stories and moments.

First, one from last week.

I've got two Accuracy Corrector Zeta SFs (I've been loving these!) turning in across the board a few rounds into the game. My opponent cut his flanking Gemmer Sojan with Stealth Device in, boosted, and wound up at Range 1 through an Asteroid. Ok. I've got Tycho in my rear arc, too, so I'm tossing 3 dice. Hit Hit Crit. So this is Gemmer, with a Steath Device, and through a rock, so he's tossing 6 dice. Blanks and focus. He's taking off the shields and I'm just saying "I hope it's not a Direct Hit." I mostly mean it; I don't really want to do that to a guy casual night, blow his A-Wing off the table in a single shot, even if it would be a great story. So the crit was just something meaningless like Shaken Pilot, but still. That's something which just shouldn't happen on 3 dice vs 6.

Today:

#1: Han Solo vs Captain Oicunn. Range 2 shot, rolls. 3 natural crits.

#2: Different opponent; his damaged PTL/AdvS Kylo Ren is his last ship in the game (Test Pilot Blackout got bodied by Cracken and Wedge ordnance... Nym didn't even have to shoot), and just barely bumps into Damaged Cockpit Wedge by a hair. VI Airen Cracken and Nym both close into Range 1, but Cracken bumps. This will matter later. So Kylo's at 2 Hull remaining, and Nym has Autoblaster Turret, a Target Lock, and a focus from Rey. Focus-Crit. Ok, rerolling that crit. Another crit, and Kylo has the evades to cancel it. Nym is shown the Dark Side, but at least Airen shoots. He misses, but I'm able to Barrel Roll Nym out of arc. So Kylo has no one left to shoot but my Z-95. Four natural hits, against my two eyes, on a turn where I bumped, so that's a vaporized Zed. Ok, so this is a game now. His Kylo flees, gets his crit on Nym, so I'm now PS 0 with both my ships, and we dance some, but eventually he comes back around and Wedge is able to finish things. That crit rerolled into a crit, tho.

Nym's Autoblaster just wasn't doing it against Kylo. There was an earlier time when Nym bumped and didn't have a Rey token, so even when he was able to get Barrel Rolled clear by Cracken, his blank/focus results didn't mean anything.

Guri gets hit by Harpoons, and she's down to 1 HP, and is going to fly over a rock next turn. The Dalan Oberos who shot her is at 1 HP, and due to his PS 0 crit, moves first. Guri flys over the rock, landing at R1 of Dalan. Roll for obstacle damage? Of course it's the hit.

Resistance Bomber vs Assaj, assaj and bomber get caught in corner taking bomblets, bomber only lives by asaaj flying off the board

Flying Chopper (VCX, Ion Turret, FCS, Hera & Ezra) & Mangler LW Dash vs Bomblet Miranda & 2 PS1 Wookies.

Picked Miranda's approach and got range 1 primary on her to get her to 2 hull. She sneaks past with a beautiful SLAM action, but is still in arc for the Ion turret. I get the hit through and ionise her - 1 hull left.

Get the hard turn in and am behind her but no actions and poor reds mean no damage this round. She's behind a rock with limited options so I slow roll in behind her - forgetting the bomblet generator.

Cop the bomblet and roll hit, crit and get Sabined. Last 2 shields go so I take the crit - Blinded Pilot. Wookies roll in behind me at range 1 and can't roll anything but crits. Ghost blows up. Miranda runs and survives.

Opponent fires harpoons at my Fenn. Activated Fenn's ability, and he proceeds to roll 1 hit, 2 focus, 1 blank. He had a focus token and TL, but Fenn was like "nah bro". The look of frustration on his face was priceless. Fenn rolled 1 evade and one blank. No damage at all from the harpoon.

Vader tossed off a Harpoon after Barrelling for arc and Locking. Focus, Blank, Blank, Blank. No worries; I have a Target Lock. Right? Rerolled to Focus, Blank, Blank, Blank.

In the right hands, Harpoon Missiles are totally balanced.

Last night me and a friend of mine were playing and it was only my Scum Fenn vs his Dark Curse, we were in a lot of rush, so much so that at a certain point we stopped using dials and rullers, we'd think about the manouver and move the ships with our hands, and then roll dice, it took a little longer than we anticipated. After 5/6 rounds of this his dark curse is at 2 health from a bomb earlier and I roll Hit Hit Blank, he has a focus and range 3, Blank Blank Blank Blank and he's dead.

Omega Ace, range one of an unsuspecting X-wing. Is the Swarm leader and someone has the Xwing in site and in range. Omega Ace Rolls, blank blank blank Focus. Burns Focus and Target lock, 4 CRITS! X-wing rolls blank Focus but no token. Two shields take the first two crits. Then Damaged Cockpit, followed by Major explosion ?, and poor guy rolled a hit, took another Crit, and end of the Xwing....... the disheartening look really needed a picture.

This is just at home with my boy but shows how dice like to laugh at us.

A silly 170pt game with a fully loaded Falcon and 2 T-70s vs 9 TIEs of various flavours. I'm gonna need some luck to negate his numerical advantage.

Early on, Nien Nunb, carrying R2D2 and a focus, finds himself a shield down and in range 2 arc of a tokenless bomber and a stressed TIE/FO. No problem, take a hit or 2 and jet off to regen.

TIE/FO rolls hit, hit. Nunb rolls blank, focus. Ok, burn focus, 1 shield remains. Bomber rolls hit, crit. Nunb rolls blank, blank. Right. Crit is major explosion. Roll a hit. Second crit is a direct hit..... Numerical advantage intensifies....

Towards the end of a match it ends being my ps2 scum y with tlt vs a 2 hp whisper with intel agent. May as well call it..... but we decided to play it out. After several quick paced rounds and ive bled most of my hp's. I managed to juke whisper with a k turn that landed on the very edge of the mat. Managed to surprise my opponent enough to deny Whisper a shot that round, and she was decloaked. Her choices were to barrel roll remaining in my arc at range 1 or take tlt fire at range 2. She barrel rolled in, still not haveing arc herself, just barely. We were rather excited at this point, and had apparently been talking loudly as a small crowd of fellow players had massed. I rolled my 3 red dye to get..... 3 eyeballs...... a mass groan and wave of laugher erupted, myself included. The y died 2 rounds later. That was one of my most enjoyable losses to date.

I was flying triple tactician Auzitucks against my opponent's Norra Wexley , Shara Bey, and Jan Ors. Jan has just Lando crew. Shara has Operations Specialist, Adaptability, and R3 Astomech. Norra? Gloriously had Swarm Leader and Finn (and BB-8, but he didn't contribute directly). First round, range 3: both Norra and Shara roll in, take target locks on one ship. Jan misses to OpSpec a Focus onto Norra, after having rolled Lando for an Evade. Shara doesn't manage to roll an eyeball, but BOOM! 2 dice + title + ability + Finn + Jan + Swarm Leader + Focus + TL = 5 hits, 2 crits . OK. At least it was Range 3 and I rolled double-Evade. I dash ahead with that Auzituck (blocks Jan), roll slower with the other two. Norra is able to BB-8 and 1-bank into the face of a different Auzituck, Shara is able to pick up the R3 Astromech Evade, and with the focus and TL, 7 hits, 1 crit  on a different Auzituck. Norra survives the counterattack (a Range 1 and a Range 2) at one hull remaining. Third round of the engagement, my un-damaged Auzituck bumps and doesn't get their Evade. So a 2 dice attack from Jan (2 crits...), a 3 dice rear attack from Shara (2 hits and a crit) and a "mere" 6 dice rear attack from Norra nabs 1 hit, 4 crits . At this point, I was at 5 hull remaining and Evaded the hit, so four crits... and one (but only one) is a Direct hit. Killed from full HP in a single round. Well, at least I took out Norra that turn with another ship. But it's not enough. Both my ships are pretty wounded. I'm unlucky enough to get the PS 0 crit on Jan, so she's a blocker now. Shara is able to throw those rear-arc attacks at range 1 with a TL, sometimes also with Jan's help and bit by bit I fold. All I had to do was kill two ARCs, and Jan would pretty much never be able to hurt me, but my red dice rolls are merely average.

But ****. I took three attacks from Norra Wexley, and she put 20 hits and crits out. When that jank works, it works.

Next game, I lost 1 HP flying triple PTL Starviper against the same opponent, tabling his 6 A-Wings, so kinda a wash.

I posted this elsewhere a while back but it was a pretty funny moment.

We were playing one of the Battlestar Pallas missions and this poor little academy pilot Tie found himself face-to-face with these two huge ships.

tvAiCSz.jpg

The huge ships rush forward speed 4 straight :o - missed by about 2mm on each side!

Next round 3K, still trying to do his duty for the Empire. Alas, after all that, he did not survive the round.

We played a four player furball last night. 120 points, small base only, no turrets, no ordnance, only one named pilot allowed. Two obstacles per person. We had a Mangler Rho/Striker/double TIE/sf vs. HLC Rho/quad TIE (with Mauler) vs. Etahn/triple Mangler B vs. five StarVipers. It started out with the Imperials clashing straight and fast, and the Rebel and Scum forces slowly tangling on the opposite side of the asteroid field. Everybody eventually collided in the middle after having been softened up. No clear targets on any list - apart from Etahn and the Rho's, sort of. Almost three hours, start to finish, with the win going to the last StarViper standing only two or three rounds after the first total elimination. It was a blast.

Sunny with linked cannon battery shooting at range 2. Rolls a crit and blank. Reroll the blank and end up with another crit, activating her ability for 3 crits. Priceless!

Having to deploy the Zeb attack shuttle from Ghost; before ghost got melted; Zeb having to face Scum Fenn and Torani Kulda both on full health.

Zeb solo's the pair; showing why he is a true hero of the Rebellion; the look on my opponents face as Zeb blocks and barrels for all his worth; priceless.

This happened a while ago, but it's still good. Lok revenant (dead eye) fires a harpoon at my Y-Wing (scum). End result hit, hit, crit. My Y-Wing:

- Rolls 1 evade from his agility

- Rolls 1 evade from an asteroid obstructing

- Get 1 evade from the shot being taken through a bomb while Scum nym was active.

So the Y-Wing dodged a harpoon... needless to say, I might have laughed a bit louder than I should have :P

Our HotAC game last night pulled in a guy who had all but quit about a year ago. He said he'll still be bringing Legion every Thursday, but he's going to start bringing an X-Wing, too. He put in the killshot on a TIE Defender after the other two guys in that formation failed to scratch the bugger, got real excited. Long live fly casual! Long live X-Wing!

All four of us last night dropped T65's for a four-way, eight-obstacle, 35 points-max free-for-all. We had an Expertise Porkins with FAA, an Intensity Speraldo with BB-8, an Expertise Wes with FAA, and an Expertise Luke with R2-D2. These new upgrades make the T65 a lot more interesting to fly, and the most difficult mechanic to get used to was the S-Foil changing before activation - it helped to think of it as a sort of decloak. The shenanigans available to an Intensity/BB-8 Speraldo were incredible, but getting the timing right on all the boost/barrel roll/S-Foil changes/Intensity interactions was terrifically hard to follow. But the flexibility of the build is too much fun. Expertise on all of them, especially Porkins, seemed suddenly worth the points; although, probably not a good idea competitively with all those Strezra's and Tactician Wookiees running around. All in all, the Refit and the S-Foils look like they will make the T65 pretty darn viable, maybe even a bit broken in something like an Objectives or HotAC format.

So @ZealuxMyr is running a custom "Galactic Underbelly" scum campaign. A bit like HotAC, but a full custom set of rules, and he runs the GM ships. In this mission, we had to clear a minefield to let an unarmed C-ROC pass through. Things... weren't going well. We were mostly still in Z-95s, and the enemy ships were taking a toll. So one pilot pulled a maneuver which (combined with his Kimogila + Seismic Torpedos in the next scenario--one where Asteroids chase the closest ship) would earn him the callsign 'Snowplough.' 4-straight into the middle of four mines. They all explode, and he caught three of the four enemy ships in the radius, killing them all. Himself, too, but still. And on top of this: he passed his "bailout check" with no penalties.

I was playing a game with a guy from my local squad. It came down to my harpooned silencer at 1 hp and his Rho boat at 3 hp. We ended up in a range 1 joust. I only managed to sneak past 2 damage on him (leaving him at 1 hp). He got the damage he needed on me and blew me up. This triggered the splash damage from the harpoon condition and blew his ship up! We did final salvo and I won that. I've never played a game that was this close before.

Two games against my nemesis at my FLGS. I have a win rate at this store around 55% with a 1st and two 2nds in four kit tourneys there, but this guy has my number and I have maybe won 30% of the time against him.

Moment 1: About a year ago, I am flying Mindlinked Kavil, 4-LOM and Cobra. Forget what opponent has but its also 3 ship list. When time is called, we are just starting a round. Kavil has Dorsal turret and is firing first behind me at range 1 but we have same PS. I have 1 hull left, my opponent's ship is somewhere around 4 or 5 health, and has a 3 primary so Kavil is almost surely dead after my shot.

I manage to get enough hits to strip the last of his shields and put 1 crit onto his hull but he is going to live and kill me with his return shot. The rest of the guys are finished playing and watching us finish our round. As he reaches for his damage deck I start chanting, "Blinded Pilot, Blinded Pilot, Blinded Pilot." He pulls his damage card and flips up...Blinded pilot. he can't shoot. Match is over. Then we count up our points and as it turns out, he beats me by one point and wins anyway. BEST. LOSS. EVER.

Moment 2: Playing against the same guy, I have Han aimed at a ship with 5 hp left at range 1 with Han having a focus token. His ship is going to get a prime shot on one of my other ships so I really want to kill him. I roll hit, hit, focus, blank. I should just take he 3 damage, right? I am chatting with one of the other guys at the FLGS about whether or not to use Han's ability. At one point he says, "Odds say take the 3 hits."

I yell, "Never tell me the odds!" and I grab and roll all four dice. Hit, Hit, Crit, Crit. One of the crits is direct hit and I kill the ship.

So fun casual matchup I was flying Echo Against 3 B-wings. One of thos being Ten Numb with Adaptability and a Mangler Cannon.

Echo Decloaked was dialed in, when my opponent did a few unexpected moves which had all kinds of arcs in bad places for Echo if I complete the move dialed in. Instead Echo uses his Navigator going from a 1 turn to a 3 ends up further than expected. Ten Numb down 2 shields from the previous turn has to burn his action to get arc on Echo, but is r1. Shoots and gets one hit, Sensor Jammered, his reroll from his FCS target lock whiff. Echo mows down Ten Numb, Hit Hit 3xCrit on a natty. All 3 crits direct hits! The other two Bwings either had no shot or were evaded between rolls and sensor Jammer.

Was great to just get Echo on the table. Red hot dice and a jank build doing work was icing!

How perfect you’d be flying Han then
