Jam tokens rule

By Kivraz, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My wife and I just started playing X wing about a week ago so we are still trying to learn and understand some of the rules. The main one I am not sure on at this point is jam tokens from Jamming Beam. How does this work as far as what effect will this have on the opponent?

Jam Token

When a ship has both a jam token and a focus, evade, or blue target lock token, remove the jam token. Then that ship chooses and removes one of its focus, evade, or blue target lock tokens. A ship is "Jammed" if it has a jam token.

Does this make them basically forfeit their next action? Sorry for the rookie question, I am sure I will have a ton.

No, if just means they lose a token. You actually remove the jam token before the ship takes one of its tokens away.

Yes and no.

If you already have a focus, evade, or blue target lock token than it will result in you losing one of those tokens and have no effect beyond that.

If you do not have one of those tokens, then it will remain on your ship until you get one of those tokens and promptly remove it. This can result in a future action not assigning you a token but instead simply removing the jam token from your ship.

So say I attack first and put a jam token on my opponent then its there turn to attack and they have a focus token does that force they to lose that token so that turn and can't use it or would it be the next turn for it to take effect?

If they already have a focus token, it is stripped effective-immediate. before they activate in combat.

Alright thank you guys very much for quick responses.

To simplify, if a ship if it has a focus, evade or blue target lock and you jam that ship, simply tell the ship's owner to remove one of those tokens, their choice. If it does not have any of those tokens, give it a jam token. Now next time they would acquire a focus, evade or blue target lock, instead remove the jam token.

Also keep in mind that multiple jamp tokens can stack, requiring multiple focuses / evades, etc to clear.

However, just because a ship has a jam token does not mean that it should focus on getting rid of it immediately. The reinforce action remains unnaffected and in other cases, it might be better to barrel roll or boost out of arc and try to clear the jam token later.
