SW Legion vs Bolt Action

By andreuac7, in Star Wars: Legion

Hi all,

Although I'm not a BA player, I've watched many of its battle reports and I've realised there are big similarities between the two systems.

Has anybody else noticed them? Can a BA expert player point them?

PS: I'm not pointing this fact as a bad reference for SW Legion, in fact all the opposite, I think it's GREAT.

Regards :)

No idea, but I do like the Legion system, so I am sure that I would probably enjoy BA. :)

I have a huge BA collection as I love WW2....I also love SW...so im getting Legion too!!

Yep there are some similarities.

And those would be?

Movement for Infantry.

In this game there are suppression tokens similar to pin markers in BA, leaders also give buffs for being in range.

BA is a pretty good tabletop system...top 3

I don't think Legion will have the blind action dice/priority system that BA or LOTR (the other game that Legion is similar to) has. Looks like there will definite Player 1/Player 2 alternating rounds.

I think that a Bolt Action-LoTR?Hobbit hybrid would have some real legs to work with.

I love Star Wars, I love Imperial; Assault, and I think that FFG are in a good place right now with product and development; still waiting to see what Legion has to offer though. The idea that there are only two forces to choose from is my main concern.

Sure, point to Armada, but that game makes some sense in its scale and the way they deliver it, and I place it in the exception basket.

Yeah, the factions fact also concerns me. But I think they will add something like subfactions depending on the commander you play, giving special rules to your army and maybe some more kind of customisation, leading to completely different combinations.

Also, this doesn't take the problem of the lack of variety of miniatures in each faction (the more factions, the wider range of miniatures).

I think it’ll be easier once the full rules drop to notice any similarities. Compared to other popular tabletop games, the big three that stand out are suppression, morale, and activations. Many other games have either distinct phases like movement, shooting, etc... and/or an IGOUGO system. Legion and BA have a unit doing everything ina single activation. Suppression is also something not usually represented, but is in Legion and BA. Looks like morale plays a larger role in Legion and BA than in other games as well.

What it it looks like to me are that the games are actually very dissimilar in the mechanics, but they have a similar vision for what a squad based game with mostly guns should feel like. Impactful tactical choices, missions and effects that don’t always involve simply killing things, and powerful but counterable vehicle support.

Not a bad thing, BA is a good game.

Legion shares a ton of mechanics with DUST. This is a good thing.

I dont see much similarity between BA and Legion tbh, no more then between most other skirmish games.

They both use unconventional activation systems, BA completely random and Legion somewhat random but not similar to eachother. I think Legion has the more interesting system, even if I love the order dice in BA.

In any case, im very impressed and hyped for Legion so far, and im a huge fan of the BA ruleset so would there be similarities ill be happy with it, i just dont see them :)
