First order at mel`s miniatures

By Keki1010, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Yesterday I bought the Providence(25in.) and the Munificent plus a Separatist Fighter Set (1)from Mel`s miniatures,

i have to admit i bought them all in BSF, mainly because I can't /won't effort FUD for the double amount of money,

I heard that W/BSF is extremely hard to paint and it hase an extremely rough texture, is that true because some people say it's totally ok

and there is no reason to go with FUD.

Sooooo, I know the basic steps of working with WSF, like you have to wash it with soap and you have to paint it with several coats.

Is there a good tutorial I can follow?

Now my question is, what is the best way to go for a beginner like me, should I start with a simple design or should I go for the official Providence(invincible) concept art? I have basic knowledge of painting plastic models, that may help??? Also should I use air brush or a brush to paint the models?

My final question is how to paint the vertical stripes on the Providence?(They look so hard to paint)

Finally I have to say that mel`s models look so amazing and i already thank him for sharing his ideas with other people who just want their favorite ships as a miniature.

Pls. excuse may english,

Greeting from germany......

Hi.
I'm not a great painter (I lack the skill, experience and maybe patience) but I'll tell you my experience with WSF. In my case as I am very lazy for that stuff, I didn't wash it or whatever, I painted all my miniatures as they were with acrylic paint and I liked the result.
Unfortunately I don't have good pictures to share from the Providence or Munificent as I didn't take the time yet to take them with my camera and just took some with my cellphone and with poor light so they are fuzzy, but here they are anyway:

I posted better quality pictures of the Yuuzhan Vong ships in WSF here:

As to how to paint the stripes of the Providence, I did it carefully marking them with the brush and then painting the middle, but after I did, my girlfriend told me that I should have done it using tape to mark the borders which I think would have been better, but well, it was already painted.

Ok, thank you for your advice your ships look pretty good I have to say, especially the Yuuzhan Vong battleship.

I think i will try the tape...

I've bought a lot of Mel's WSF models and I'm for the most part satisfied with the material. The detail grade is lower that that of FUD, no question. The advantage is that it is also more resistant to breaking. From a viewing distance of 50 centimetres which you normally have when you use the ships for playing, they look very fine.

With regard to paining: I never clean any of the models with soap. I make sure they are free of powder remains and coat them in black primer. I use WSF instead of BSF, because the makes it easier to see, whether the whole model is primed. I use black primer because on some models the recesses are really hard to paint/wash.

I usually need 2 layers of paint, 3 at most. But it is possible to use more layers to reduce the graininess of the surface. What absolutely does not work, is washing large areas as you normally do with smooth surfaces. The wash makes the grainy surface of WSF look dirty and undefined, as if the model had laid in the dirt. To enhance the visual depth, I deliberately wash all gaps and recesses with a fine brush. That process is somewhat tedious though.

Wow, I heard a lot that you have to wash the models with soap because they would suck up paint...

From my experience I can tell you that that is not true. I have painted by now 8 WSF ships and they suck the paint right away without doing anything before.

FUD needs to be washed, they use a blob of coconut grease to help hold the resin in place, once the sculpt is printed they melt the grease out with hot water which leaves a residue behind. This residue will prevent any paint from sticking unless it's washed off.

Some of my ships have come in literally dripping with oil. All but one of them were FUD. I don't remember if the one BSF marauder I have was oily or not. I would have washed it out of habit either way.

So, the separatist fleet is on its long hyperspace travel to Germany,

I really appreciate the many replays, yet Im a little confused. Do i have to wash the models with dish soap or is it fine if I just clean the dust with a brush?

In WSF you don't need to wash them, if you want just clean the dust with a brush and it will be fine. In FUD it could be good to do a wash.

... Always wash models. Even if it’s just a gentle toothbrush scrub.

Always Always.

Even moderate handling by someone on the packing side, if they haven’t washed their hands or are sweaty, can coat a model in barrier oil that can stop a base or prime coat from adhering to the surface.

Basically, it’s a risk game to not do so ... Plastic, Resin, Metal, Sintered powder, 3D extruded... Wash it.

Whether it needs it or not it's not going to hurt it to do it and it doesn't take a lot of time

Here are the models from mel, love them.

Detail is more then ok. Going to wash and paint them next week.....

If anyone want's to see one of the ships from a different angle just ask me....

Here are more pictures of the ships: https://kiki1010.imgur.com/all/

If you have any suggestions regarding the paint scheme for the models you're welcome to give your ideas....

Soo,

i painted my Dreadnought.

At first wanted to make my own variant. But then I thought: I want to have the „real“ one.

so I started. It wasn’t of any help that

my first, own, painting style didn’t cover the whole ship, so that small glimpses of black would shine through.

i tried my best. It turns out pretty ok for my first wsf 3D printed model.

I will work on it in the future, because the blue lines aren’t very fleshed out.

Next I will buy the Nebula Sd. Way easier Color scheme and structure.

so I can use my gaind “experience”.

I will buy it in the new medium matirial. The 80 dollar one.

good first painting, WSF is tricky to master but rewarding in the end. As I now painted 15 models in that material (5 more to go) an a lazy painter, just a hint, never try too hard at details, WSF doesn't allow it.

but it's cheap, ok to see, and good for learning

Thanks, as I said I will try on the nebula sd. next.

I really don't dislike WSF as many do... Can anyone tell me what the new materials look like? Now it isn't WSF an FUD anymore.

"Frosted Ultra Detail" is now "Smooth Fine Detail Plastic" And Black HD Acrylate is gone.

Then there are the Premium Versatile Plastics which are a bit in between of both materials.

This picture has the old names but

1st_ Black Natural Versatile Plastic

2nd_ Black Premium Versatile Plastic

3rd_ BHDA (which is gone)

4th_ Smooth Fine Detail Plastic

I don't say this lightly: I do think that anything other than Smooth Fine Detail Plastic (previously known as FUD) is a waste of money.

If only the larger ships were available in FUD.

Only a Sith deal in absolutes,

I will do what I must... ASK you something.

Can you paint SFDP with a brush? Or is an air brush set ultimately the better option?

The subject isn’t so much the issue.

I mean, ultimately, if you know what you are doing, then an airbrush is better... just because airbrush is better, giving smoother coverage for example.

Properly Primed and Prepared, Which you have to do regardless, it’s quite capable of being brush painted. ?

I have the Centurion Class Battlecruiser in FUD.
