Attack the dreadnaught!

By DeathstarII, in X-Wing Squad Lists

First time flying the resistance bomber and thought up a thematic list to go with it

Attack the dreadnaught! (100)

•"Crimson Specialist" (Paige) (36) - B/SF-17 Bomber
Trajectory Simulator (1), •Bomblet Generator (3), Advanced Optics (2), Crossfire Formation (2), Deflective Plating (1)

Blue Squadron Novice (25) - T-70 X-Wing
Flight-Assist Astromech (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

•Poe Dameron (HOTR) (39) - T-70 X-Wing
Veteran Instincts (1), •BB-8 (2), Advanced Optics (2), •Black One (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

thoughts? And the blue novice is there because I had 26 points, wanted another resistance ship, and jess wasn’t present at the battle

I've used the exact Crimson Specialist build, and it's a heck of a lot of fun. The Adv. Optics/Crossfire combo is surprisingly effective at keeping it on the table.

I've heard someone say that Advanced Optics and Crossfire Formation is almost overkill. It seems like CFF will enable you to spend your focus token pretty reliably every turn (so saving it won't happen too often), and it isn't like taking TLs on a B/SF-17 is going to amount to much. It would allow more red moves, though.

My thought, however, would be to consider moving the AdvO over to the Blue Novice. AdvO has seemed effective on a bunch of generics, and probably would be solid on a regular X-Wing.

Other than that, seems like a really solid theme list. I've thought about Weapons Guidance on B/SF-17s, but I think it's probably better to go with CFF or Sensor Cluster for survival, rather than boosting a 2-attack ship.

Nvm, thought wrong AO

I like this squad for attacking the dreadnaught:

Twin Resistance Bomber (2) ( 100 )

"Crimson Specialist" — B/SF-17 Bomber 27
Trajectory Simulator 1
Bomblet Generator 3
Crossfire Formation 2
Ship Total: 33
Crimson Squadron Pilot — B/SF-17 Bomber 25
Trajectory Simulator 1
Ordnance Silos 2
Thermal Detonators 3
Crossfire Formation 2
Ship Total: 33
Norra Wexley — ARC-170 29
Adaptability 0
Sabine Wren 2
R5-P9 3
Alliance Overhaul 0
Ship Total: 34

I'm not sure I'd go with Norra here, @Pooleman (linking rather than quoting, because the quote is just too long).

She's got the pilot skill, but without a source of both Target Locks and Focus Tokens in the same turn, her pilot ability is almost useless. I guess there are potential rear-arc shots, but only if you spend a TL and that means you can't use R5-P9. To me, Norra over another ARC pilot looks mostly like you're just getting PS. I'd personally much rather have Thane Kyrell. He can get extra actions if the Bombers are defending, and the lower cost would allow him to carry a bomb of his own. Something like a Proximity Mine could be spicy, although I doubt your opponent would give you an opportunity to drop it during the combat phase.

Alternately, Shara Bey could carry R2-D2, who I'd like better than R5-P9 in this build. I don't really think there's the action economy to support R5-P9, except on Thane maybe.

Your objections all site the lack of ideal scenarios. Often I’ve had the spare focus to trigger the droid. Sometimes I haven’t. Ideal situations don’t often occur in X-Wing. I’ve flown this list twice now without losing a single ship.

I just think Norra and her pilot ability don't add much over other pilots at the same cost, is all. So I ran through some options.

Dropping her to another pilot could improve action economy (and maybe add an extra bomb) at the cost of pretty much just pilot skill, which isn't super-high at 8.

Gonna be flying the list both ways today, we’ll see how it fairs (bonus thematic points for me if the bomber blows up first :P )

Let us know how it goes.

It went great! Gonna post it in the bat rep forum under attack the dreadnaught!

I have another thought to consider: getting Autothrusters on Poe at the cost of dropping him down to the PS 8 baseline version (so 10 after VI). I guess I missed that in the list before, since I'm so used to seeing Poe with AT.

On Crimson Specialist, I like to ditch Trajectory Simulator if I have anything else to purchase, because she already has a lot of variety in placement. I also think that Adv. Optics isn't really worth the storage - I like Pattern Analyzer to feed the title, even after a red.

If you then use PS 9 Poe as you have him but with Autothrusters, you have room for an A-Wing (also thematic for the film). Perhaps a GSP with title, Snap, Juke, Refit, and AT?

Speaking of A-Wing Escorts:

  • Tycho Celchu (35)
    • A-Wing (26), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Push the Limit (3), Autothrusters (2), Rage (1)
  • Jake Farrell (35)
    • A-Wing (24), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Outmaneuver (3), Autothrusters (2), Push the Limit (3)
  • Crimson Squadron Pilot (30)
    • B/SF-17 Bomber (25), Trajectory Simulator (1), Bomblet Generator (3), Deflective Plating (1)

So here's two Push the Limit A-Wings, each with Proton Rockets escorting a bomber. I guess I could find the points for Sensor Cluster if I dropped Outmaneuver to the more common VI on Jake, but I'm not sure if PS 9 really makes it anymore, and I kind of want Jake to have a bit more punch. Both are able, without prior set-up, to Boost and fire Proton Rockets in the same turn with rerolls.
