Can double defenders come back?

By CMDR Ytterium, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi I'm thinking of this for my next tournament, any advice on what I should be worried about? Which ships I should be willing to let go?

Delta Squadron Pilot [30]

Tie X-7 [-2]

Ship Total (28)

Colonel Vessery [35]

Tie/D [0]

Ion Cannon [3]

Expertise [4]

Twin Ion Engine Mk.II [1]

Ship Total (43)

Omega Leader [21]

Comm Relay [3]

Juke [2]

Ship Total (26)

Grand Total {97}

Should I put Cruise Missiles on vessery? switch OL for something else? or the delta to a Tie/D, Give it Ion, and give Vess tractor Beam?

I have been using:

Maarek Stele (TIE Defender) (35)
Lone Wolf (2)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Countess Ryad (34)
Predator (3)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Fire-Control System (2)
Flechette Cannon (2)
Darth Vader (3)

I've been flying a similar list with a lot of success; the main difference being I switched Omega Leader out for a second x7 Delta. It's tough, it can put out some hurt and it's pretty forgiving to fly.

The Omega Leader build does have a couple of advantages, however with the PS and target priority. Omega Leader is still a pain to deal with one-on-one in the endgame, so while Vessery remains public enemy number one, Omega Leader can help take some heat off him.

I'd say the list compares pretty well to Triple D, depending on how well you can leverage Omega Leader's attributes. The Deltas have always been the workhorses in my list, usually my opponent focuses so much on taking down Vessery ASAP the Deltas can really cause some chaos.

Hmmm...

This could a lot of different ways, but it all depends on your play style, what ships you like, tactics, etc. I personally LOVE defenders, because they are just so good.

Heres my advice:

It looks like you want to keep Vessery, and he looks pretty good. But what about taking out that Delta guy, and using Colonel Jendon (26) with the title (3). That puts you at 98, and that’s not bad if you really want the initiative. This way you can lock onto anyone, then pass the lock off to OL, then Vessery will get one too. Just some target lock shenanigans...

This could get even better if you give Jendon FCS (2), but then took off that ion cannon (-3), 97 points. Put on Tractor Beam (1), and XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1). A total of 99 if I can do math.

I think this would be really fun to play, and I’ve noticed that the more fun I have in tournaments, the better I do. Mess around and have fun!

Ryad - X7, stealth device, expertise (39)

Marek Stelle - X7, stealth device, expertise (40)

Countdown - adaptive ailerons, Tie mk.2 engines (21)

It's not double -Defenders, but I've been thinking about a particular Imperial "combined arms" list:

Ryad - /x7, Intensity (34)

Deathrain - Accuracy Corrector, Bomblet Generator, Lightweight Frame (34)

Rho Squadron Pilot - XG1, Heavy Laser Cannon, Linked Batteries, Lighting Reflexes, Long-Range Scanners (32)

Kind of a little of everything, which means it probably excels at nothing.

Personally, when I fly Expertise, I really like to have TIE Mk.IIs on my defenders. I can see the appeal of Stealth Device, though. 4 greens + focus/evade is nice. I think I flew a list of two Delta/x7/Stealth + Ryad/x7/Stealth/Outmaneuver once. It's always so hard to tell if Stealth Device is good or not; if it's better than just Hull Upgrade would have been.

This is the one I’m planning on trying...

Kylo (100)

Delta Squadron Pilot (28) - TIE Defender
TIE/x7 (-2)

Delta Squadron Pilot (28) - TIE Defender
TIE/x7 (-2)

•Kylo Ren (44) - TIE Silencer
Veteran Instincts (1), Fire Control System (2), Pattern Analyzer (2), •First Order Vanguard (2), Autothrusters (2)

I came up with something very similar except with Primed Thrusters advanced sensors, but in my local Meta, Kylo hasn't done very well, maybe Vader or QD

I'm gonna try out double Ion Cannon Defenders tonight at my FLGS.

Ryad - VI - TIE/D - Ion Cannon - Twin Ion Engine mk.II

Vessery - Adaptability - TIE/D - Ion Cannon - Twin Ion Engine mk.II

Nu Squadron - Harpoon Missiles - LRS

Wish I had an extra 2 points to switch out Ryad's VI for PTL.

Advanced optics is another good options. I'm finding it to be very underrated tech so far. Kylo doesn't seem to be doing well anywhere so far, which makes me sad. I think the build that comes out the best overall is this, but it's too many points to go with double deltas.

kylo - PTL, advanced sensors, title, autothrusters, advanced optics. Action economy for days, but it's 47 points.

Here’s mine I haven’t loss yet with:

Countess Ryad — TIE Defender 34
Push the Limit 3
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II 1
TIE/x7 -2
Ship Total: 36
Glaive Squadron Pilot — TIE Defender 34
Veteran Instincts 1
Tractor Beam 1
TIE/D 0
Ship Total: 36
"Pure Sabacc" — TIE Striker 22
Expertise 4
Lightweight Frame 2
Adaptive Ailerons 0
Ship Total: 28

But I think I’ll be trying out this:

Countess Ryad — TIE Defender 34
Push the Limit 3
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II 1
TIE/x7 -2
Ship Total: 36
Rexler Brath — TIE Defender 37
Expertise 4
Tractor Beam 1
TIE/D 0
Ship Total: 42
Nu Squadron Pilot — Alpha-class Star Wing 18
Tractor Beam 1
Flechette Cannon 2
XG-1 Assault Configuration 1
Ship Total: 22

Been thinking about bringing back defenders but instead of 3rd ship being a delta going a harpoon gunboat.

TIE Defender: •Colonel Vessery (35)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Juke (2)

TIE Defender: •Countess Ryad (36)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Push the Limit (3)

Alpha-Class Star Wing: •Lieutenant Karsabi (29)
Guidance Chips (0)
Deadeye (1)
Harpoon Missiles (4)

Total: 100/100

I like this but I would put Wired on Karsabi as opposed to deadeye because she gets a lot of stress

On list #1, I think I'd probably rather run a Colonel Vessery over glaive. By giving up the VI and taking a 0-point Elite upgrade, you'd gain two free target locks a lot of the time. The freebie Elite could be any: Adaptability leaves you at PS 7 instead of 8 with a Glaive, pretty close; A Score To Settle is pretty nice when you're potentially making 2 attacks per turn, it's almost like a mini-Expertise; Trick Shot is Trick Shot.

On list #2, a cannon-Nu seems like more fun than a Harpoon-Nu, so I'm all for it. I'd still add Long Range Scanners, though. I'm not sure if I like Tractor Beam at PS 2, however. Seems like it'll be hard to leverage. Maybe Jamming Beam could work. It seems like it'd be an interesting thing to try, where sometimes you could force people to discard important tokens, or set them up with a Jam token to prevent them from getting an effective action next round. Tractor Beam might be better, but Jamming Beam seems like it could be interesting to play with.

Love the idea on List 1. I already made the change.

The Nu Tractor Beam is nice against swarms where there's usually some PS1's. It's also nice for dumping folks on obstacles or setting them up to hit obstacles.

I'm not completely sold on it yet. I've flown it once against Wookie's and it worked really well. I got Countess out of arc a couple of times and twice Wookies met rocks. I'll see how it flies in a couple of games Thursday night and report back.

Then I would need LRS to help get the harpoon off versus higher PS ships. Think I would rather the extra utility deadeye brings

Oh I firmly believe double defenders can still be BRUTAL.

Ryad

TIE/X7

PTL

TIE Mk. II

Vessery

TIE/D

Expertise

Tractor Beam

Nu SP

XG-1

Linked Battery

Flechette Canon

LRS

The Defenders are their usual brutal, effective selves. LRS on the Nu feeds Vessery, and provides a little control.
